Regional Climate Centers (RCC) Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI: drought index). Recent 10-year climatology for drought in summerl months, 1950-1999.Drought is one of the most consequential aspects of variation in precipitation and temperature patterns in terms of its impacts on natural ecosystems and human systems. The production of food and clean water can be strongly affected, as can forest products production, outdoor recreation, ecosystem processes such as wildland fire, and many other processes affecting ecosystem services. Having a grasp on recent ranges of variability in drought conditions can provide a context for understanding ongoing and future climate change and its impacts on ecosystem services....

The overall project goal is to understand and model the watershed impacts of forest restoration actions (thinning, prescribed fire) and climate change on the hydrologic function, particularly with respect to (1) changes in soil moisture and water yield during snowmelt, (2) inter-annual and directional changes in stream water quality, and (3) the resulting impacts on watershed management for wildlife species threatened by disturbance and climate change.Specifically, we will: use known relationships of forest structure on snow-water equivalent (SWE) values and processes of sublimation (ablation), infiltration and run-off in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico to model forest-stand restoration prescriptions,...

Improved Gulf Hypoxia Planning Tool: Landscape scale planning tools focus conservation priorities through a series of region-specific lenses. These tools include: CHAT; SECAS; Gulf Hypoxia Initiative - Precision Conservation Blueprint v1.5; and landscape designs developed by the Great Plains LCC and Gulf Coast Prairie LCC. Discussions with industry, agency and organizational leaders across the mid-continent suggest that the time is ripe for opening a dialogue about how to bridge the planning between the west and east to find the appropriate stakeholder-driven set of mid-continent connections for a network of lands and waters. The recipient will assist staff from multiple LCCs and other interested entities in setting...

Monarch butterfly and other pollinators are in trouble. Monarch butterfly habitat— including milkweed host plants and nectar food sources—has declined drastically throughout most of the United States. Observed overwinter population levels have also exhibited a long-term downward trend, suggesting a strong relationship between habitat loss and monarch population declines. Preliminary research results from a U.S. Geological Survey led effort indicate that we need a comprehensive conservation strategy that includes all land types in order to stabilize monarch populations at levels necessary to adequately minimize extinction risk—urban areas will likely play a critical role. Urban Monarch Guides include a Handout, Guidebook,...

The ShoreZone in the Classroom Curriculum Implementation project built upon the ShoreZone in the Classroom Pilot Networking Trip. Educational Consultant Marie Acemah liaised over email and in-person at the North Slope School District (NSBSD) Curriculum Camp in Barrow to develop Curricular Units that make ShoreZone available as an educational tool in NSBSD classrooms. This project resulted in two Units, specifically: 1) Coastal Ecosystems Unit; and 2) Documentary Filmmaking Summer Intensive Proposal. The ShoreZone tool is now available and accessible throughout the NSBSD district. The District and the Ilusagvik College are interested in partnering with ShoreZone to lead for-credit summer documentary film camps in...

Desert LCC Base Maps and Data describe the physical and cultural geography of the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative. These products include the Desert LCC vector boundary available as a shapefile and KML, as well as print-quality graphic design files for thematic maps including Watersheds, Land Cover, Vegetation and a Base Map. The scale of the maps is 1:2,500,000. About the Desert LCC Region: Forty percent of the Desert LCC area lies in the United States and the remaining 60 percent, in Mexico. The total DLCC area is 536,955 square miles or 1,390,713 square kilometers. To explore data per Desert LCC priorities, visit the Conservation Planning Atlas.

The vulnerability of Pacific Lamprey to climate change will be evaluated by using an approach that relies on existing climate change model projections for stream conditions (i.e. hydrograph, temperatures, winter flood events) and lamprey sensitivity to environmental changes due to climate change.

We collected a series of audio recordings of interviews conducted with research participants. The information collected details what was discussed during the conversations between the interviewer (one of our project team members) and project participants, individually, in pairs, or as a group of three people. The audio data were mostly collected in one geographic location: Miami, Oklahoma and several of the audio files were collected over the phone. One interview was conducted via email with typed responses.
The annual distributions of waterfowl during autumn-winter can influence ecological, environmental, cultural, and economic relationships. We used previously developed Weather Severity Indices (WSI) that explained migration by dabbling ducks in eastern North America and weather data from the North American Regional Reanalysis to develop an open-access internet-based tool (i.e, WSI app) to visualize and query WSI data. We used data generated by the WSI app to determine if the weather known to elicit southerly migration by dabbling ducks had changed, October – April 1979 – 2014.We detected that the amount of area in the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways with weather severe enough to cause southerly migration decreased...

The Plains and Prairie Potholes LCC is currently developing a strategic plan that will help guide its partners toward making more informed conservation decisions across the Northern Great Plains. As part of that effort, the PPP-LCC aims to provide syntheses for its partners that will help them understand the effects of conservation decisions and policies across different resources and sectors of the economy. One way to view these impacts is in terms of ecosystem services. That is, the set of services that humans derive from ecosystems such as flood control, agricultural productivity or wildlife populations. The PPP-LCC aims to use the ecosystems services framework to synthesize current information about grasslands,...
The National Landcover Database (NLCD) from the United States (2001) and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) (2000), and a classified Landsat TM scene to fill the gap between the US and Canada were mosaicked together. Landsat images from June or July 2000-2002 were used to be consistent with timing of other data layers. Landcover across the layers were crosswalked and standardized into 5 classes: crop, grassland, other/non-habitat, woody vegetation and water/wetlands.

The study seeks to provide a retrospective analysis of the relationships among bird abundance and distribution and changes in land cover and climate in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. The resultant models will be used to provide spatially explicit forecasts of future avian responses. Using data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and a hierarchical modeling framework that accounts for imperfect detection during surveys, species distribution and abundance is estimated. Historic aerial photos are being digitized and classified to measure landscape covariates. Once species-specific relationships between distribution parameters (i.e., occupancy, colonization, extinction) and landscape covariates...

Alaska is experiencing a wide range of impacts from climate change and communities seek adaptive strategies that encourage wellness and sustainability. This report documents climate change impacts as described by community residents and climate change effects or potential effects as interpreted through the lens of public health. It is the seventh report in a series describing climate change in communities across Alaska, and the third report to focus on the Bristol Bay region. In the Alutiiq and Yupik community of Levelock Alaska, residents report changes to the weather, seasons, landscape, plants, and wildlife with important implications for community health. Understanding local impact of climate change is important...

In many large ecosystems, conservation projects are selected by a diverse set of actors operating independently at spatial scales ranging from local to international. Although small-scale decision making can leverage local expert knowledge, it also may be an inefficient means of achieving large-scale objectives if piecemeal efforts are poorly coordinated. Here, we assess the value of coordinating efforts in both space and time to maximize the restoration of aquatic ecosystem connectivity. Habitat fragmentation is a leading driver of declining biodiversity and ecosystem services in rivers worldwide, and we simultaneously evaluate optimal barrier removal strategies for 661 tributary rivers of the Laurentian Great...
