We provide genetic and distribution data for the Louisiana Pigtoe, Pleurobema riddellii, to guide decisions related to federal protection for the species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Our final dataset includes 125 COI sequences generated as part of our study representing P. riddellii from eight North American river basins. This includes the COI sequence we generated from a museum specimen collected from the Trinity River in the late 1900s, which is the first genetic confirmation of P. riddellii in the Trinity River basin. Also included are sequences from specimens initially identified as Fusconaia cerina (n=3) Fusconaia flava (n=1), Fusconaia sp. (n=5), Pleurobema sintoxia (n=10), and Pustulosa pustulosa...

A key objective of the Trinity River Restoration Program (TRRP) is maintaining and enhancing other wildlife populations through the restoration initiatives. For herpetological species, the foothill yellow-legged frog and western pond turtle have been identified as important species on which to focus monitoring efforts due to their status as California state-listed Species of Concern. As a result, considerable prior effort has focused on understanding the distribution and demography of these species, both on the main Trinity River and on the South Fork Trinity River as a comparison population (potentially representing pre-dam population status). These studies have highlighted differences in life-history traits of...

Mountain Creek Lake is a reservoir in north Texas 8 miles southwest of Dallas, Texas where historical contamination by polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs) and other organic contaminants has been reported. There was a need to reassess concentrations of contaminates of organic and inorganic compounds in the reservoir. In cooperation with the City of Dallas, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) sampled Mountain Creek Lake and two downstream stream sites over two sampling events. The study area consisted of seven sites on Mountain Creek Lake, one site on the Trinity River, and one site on Mountain Creek. Water-column and bed-sediment samples were collected at each site in June and August of 2019. Water-quality field...

Alligator Gar, Atractosteus spatula, is an iconic species native to lowland floodplain river systems where they play an important role as top predators and by linking landscapes through their movement. Alligator Gar is also an important native fisheries species in the Trinity River. Disruption of river-floodplain connectivity is implicated in declining populations of Alligator Gar across much of its range. Successful management and conservation of Alligator Gar populations will be aided by an understanding of the relationship between flow and recruitment, particularly the availability and suitability of off-channel habitats utilized by this species for reproduction.

Dispersal, establishment, and spread of aquatic invasive species such as the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) can be influenced by riverine velocities and volumetric flows in invaded lake-stream ecosystems. Zebra mussels, which have a planktonic larval form (veliger), disperse rapidly downstream from a source population. Concentrations, dispersal, and body conditions of zebra mussel veligers were studied under different volumetric flow, or discharge, conditions in a coupled lake-stream ecosystem in northern Texas, USA. Veliger densities in lotic environments were strongly related to population dynamics in upstream lentic source populations. A strong exponential decrease in veliger density was observed through...

This data release documents water-quality data obtained as part of an assessment of compounds of emerging concern (CECs) measured in samples collected at potable water and wastewater treatment plants in Dallas and downstream from Dallas in the Trinity River from August 2009 to December 2013 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the City of Dallas, Dallas Water Utilities. Targeted CECs (120 total) included human-health pharmaceuticals (prescription and non-prescription), antibiotics, steroidal hormones, stanols, sterols, detergents, personal-use products (flavors and fragrances), pesticides and repellents, industrial wastewater compounds, disinfection compounds, PAHs, flame retardants, and plasticizers....

This data release contains waterborne self-potential (WaSP) and surface-water (SW) temperature, conductivity, and specific conductance data measured by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) along a 43.2-kilometer (km) long profile in the Elm Fork of the Trinity River upstream from the Dallas, Texas, metropolitan area. The WaSP data were measured from a kayak during January 25–27, 2022, along three survey segments between Lewisville Lake Dam and Frasier Dam Recreational Area. The first segment was surveyed on January 25, began a short distance downstream from Lewisville Lake Dam, and ended about 19.2 river-km downstream, a few meters upstream from Carrollton Dam in McInnish Park. The second was surveyed on January 26,...

This dataset features inundated areas connected to the main channel at discharges from 15,000 cfs to 95,000 cfs. The spatial extent for floodplain inundation modeling in the lower Trinity River was from Romayor, Texas, to approximately Moss Bluff, Texas. River sections were modeled using steady flow conditions. For the upper section, discharge and stage were both available for the two gages (Romayor USGS 08066500 and Liberty USGS 08067000). For the lower section, the Moss Bluff gage (USGS 08067100) is tidally-influenced, so gage height didn’t correspond to upstream changes in discharge. To model river stage specific inundation for the upper section, discharge for each Landsat 8 overpass date was entered as the upstream...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Trinity River Authority, the Tarrant Regional Water District, the City of Dallas, and the North Texas Municipal Water District, constructed a finite-difference numerical groundwater-flow model of the Trinity River alluvium aquifer using MODFLOW with the Newton formulation solver (MODFLOW-NWT). This model, along with a surface water model and an analysis of long-term trends in water availability, was developed as a component of the Trinity River Basin Integrated Water Availability Assessment to evaluate future conditions under different global climate models. Thirty-three simulations are included in this data release, including one for the calibrated model, one...
