This dataset is a polygon coverage of the thickness of the overburden of the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed, in feet. It was produced by importing 1:100,000 (30-minute) and 1:24,000 scale (7.5-minute) digital elevation models (DEM) into ARC, and merging the lattices into one. The structure elevation grid for the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed was subtracted from the surface elevation grid, creating overburden thickness. This grid was contoured within the known extent of the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed into 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 foot lines. This vector file was imported to ARC. The fundamental geologic unit used in the 1995 National Oil and Gas Assessment was the play, which is defined as a set of known or postulated oil and or gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties, such as source rock, migration pathways, timing, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The geographic limit of each play was defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for each province. Bear Lake is a tectonic lake that has existed for at least several hundred thousand years. The lake basin is a relatively simple half graben, a spoon-shaped depression tilted toward the main fault on the east side of the lake. This dataset is a polygon coverage of the resource areas of the Lower Kittanning coal zone. The polygons are subdivided into 2 categories: resource areas inside the outcrop, and areas either too thin, outside the outcrop, or beyond data collection limits. The coal zone must contain at least 14 inches of coal to be a resource. This database and accompanying text depict historical and modern reported occurrences of petroleum both in wells and at the surface within the boundaries of the Central Alaska Province. These data were compiled from previously published and unpublished sources and were prepared for use in the 2002 U.S. Geological Survey petroleum assessment of Central Alaska, Yukon Flats region. Indications of petroleum are described as oil or gas shows in wells, oil or gas seeps, or outcrops of oil shale or oil-bearing rock and include confirmed and unconfirmed reports. The scale of the source map limits the spatial resolution (scale) of the database to 1:2,500,000 or smaller.

This dataset represents the thickness of the potentially minable Fire Clay coal benches in Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. The coal zone is known by other names, depending upon locale. The data were comprised of values from Kentucky in EXCEL format, data searched from the USGS' NCRDS database for Virginia and entered into StratiFact, and a StratiFact database obtained from the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES). Point data were gridded, the grid contoured and imported to ARC/INFO as polygons. The Kentucky portion was replaced by a polygonal thickness coverage obtained from the Kentucky Geological Survey that had been manually contoured, therefore State line discrepancies are to be expected....

The Pittsburgh coal bed is composed of regionally persistent divisions- a roof division (coals and shales) and a lower division, referred to as the "main bench". This dataset is a polygon coverage of the elevation of the top of the Pittsburgh Coal bed main bench, in feet above MSL. It was produced by gridding (producing 300 meter cells) 7,101 point-source data mainly from the National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) of the USGS, using ISM (Version 7.1) software. This dataset is a polygon coverage of structure contours (elevation) for the Pond Creek coal zone in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. The surface was created by gridding information from 137,355 points and contouring the grid into 100-ft intervals. Many of the points were derived from existing structure contoure maps obtained from Kentucky and West Virgina. In Virginia, data were searched from the StratiFact database created from the National Coal Resource Data System (NCRDS). The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays were defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.
