Field measurements of water depth were collected from the Niobrara River, a dynamic, sand-bed channel in northern Nebraska, in November 2012 and again in August 2016 to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly retrieval of water depth and tracking of mobile bedforms. These data were obtained by conducting topographic surveys with Trimble R8 and R10 RTK GPS receivers with a local base station and also by measuring depths with a SonTek RiverSurveyor S5 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). The data are provided in a series of tables saved as *.csv files. All tables include, at a minimum, easting and northing spatial coordinates and depths; other attributes in some of the tables include descriptive...

This table reports major, minor, and trace element compositions of bulk drill core samples from the Duluth Complex, Minnesota. Major elements were measured using wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES); minor and trace elements were determined using ICP-AES, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS). Total carbon, carbonate carbon, and total sulfur were also analyzed. Total carbon was measured by combustion followed by infrared detection on LECO instrumentation. Carbonate carbon in the bulk rock samples was determined as carbon dioxide by coulometric titration. Total...

These data were compiled for a manuscript that examines the riverine food-web structure of the Colorado River below Glen Canyon dam to its confluence with Lake Mead. Tissue from primary producers (vascular plants and algae) and consumers (aquatic invertebrates and fish) were collected before and after monsoon floods in 2006 along the 388 kilometer segment of the Colorado River in the Southwest US. Tissue samples were dried, ground, and analyzed for δ13C, δ15N, and δ2H stable isotope signatures and percent carbon and nitrogen. Analysis of these data focused on determining the proportion of terrestrial (allochthonous) vs. aquatic (autochthonous) organic matter sources at the base of the food web, trophic diversity...

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is an emergent disease estimated to have killed over five million North American bats. Caused by the psychrophilic fungus Geomyces destructans, WNS specifically affects bats during hibernation. We describe temperature-dependent growth performance and morphology for six independent isolates of G. destructans from North America and Europe. Thermal performance curves for all isolates displayed an intermediate peak with rapid decline in performance above the peak. Optimal temperatures for growth were between 12.5 and 15.8 degrees C, and the upper critical temperature for growth was between 19.0 and 19.8 degrees C. Growth rates varied across isolates, irrespective of geographic origin, and above...

The authors screened 1,397 feral horses (Equus caballus) on Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada, United States, for IgM and IgG against flavivirus during 2004-2006, 2008, and 2009. Positive serum samples were tested for neutralizing antibodies to West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV). One animal was positive for antibody against WNV in 2004, but all others tested in 2004-2006 were negative. In 2008 and 2009, the authors found evidence of increasing seropositive horses with age, whereas seroprevalence of WNV decreased from 19% in 2008 to 7.2% in 2009. No horses were positive for antibody against SLEV. Being unvaccinated, feral horses can be useful for WNV surveillance.

Amphibian decline is a problem of global importance, with over 40% of species considered at risk. This phenomenon is not limited to the tropics or to other countries. Amphibian species in the U.S. are also declining, contributing to the larger, global phenomenon. For example, in the State of Wyoming, the Wyoming toad has been extirpated in the wild and the boreal toad is a species of special concern. Understanding biotic and abiotic factors that influence amphibian persistence is critical for amphibian conservation. This work in northern Wyoming has focused on demography, habitat alteration and creation, and disease in the context of multiple amphibian populations. One of the foci has been to identify the capacity...

These data are classification maps of total riparian vegetation along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon from Glen Canyon Dam to Pearce Ferry in Arizona. The data are derived from interpretation of multispectral high resolution airborne imagery that was acquired in May 2013. The total vegetation data have the same 0.2-meter ground resolution as the imagery. These data have not undergone a statistical accuracy assessment, but they are based on methods that included image interpretation to exhaustively identify total vegetation which have been shown to produce very high classification accuracies and excellent correlation between maps of total vegetation produced by independent analysts and ground truth. The data represent...

This data set contains county-level estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer, for both farm and nonfarm uses, for the conterminous United States, for 1987 through 2012. State-level farm and nonfarm nitrogen and phosphorus were derived from the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO) commercial fertilizer sales data. State estimates were then allocated to the county-level using fertilizer expenditure from the Census of Agriculture as county weights for farm fertilizer, and effective population density as county weights for nonfarm fertilizer. Data computations for 2007 - 2012 estimates are results of methods applied directly from Gronberg and Spahr, 2012. Data for 1987 - 2006 are...

Adequate water resources are vital for municipal needs in the Cumberland River watershed. As a result of continuing population growth, moderate to extreme droughts and floods, demands for competing water resources, and aging infrastructure, the evaluation of ongoing water-resources issues has become increasingly important to Federal, State, and local water-resources managers. In order to assist local decision makers in the watershed, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study in 2013 to document groundwater and surface-water withdrawals. Estimates of water use for public supply were projected in 10-year increments through 2040 and were based on 2010 public supply water data and population projections for 2020...
