To help determine whether Hg had a causal effect on corticosterone, we investigated the impact of experimental Hg intake on the corticosterone stress response in captive juvenile loons. Juveniles were subjected to three different feeding regimes: 0, 0.4 and 1.2 µg Hg (as MeHgCL)/g wet weight (ww) fish. We then measured baseline and 30 min post-solitary confinement stressor corticosterone concentrations. The data set consists of times of blood draws and dietary Hg levels. Blood samples and data set were provided to the senior author for analysis.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is under consideration as a chemical fish deterrent at pinch points in rivers (e.g., inside locks) to reduce unwanted fish passage. This study evaluated the behavioral responses of invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) to dissolved CO2 in laboratory tanks. The goal of this project was to quantify CO2 concentrations that modify round goby behavior. More specifically, avoidance behavior (voluntary response) and loss of equilibrium (involuntary response) were quantified across 5, 15, and 25°C water temperatures. These data can be used to inform future field testing of CO2 as an invasive fish deterrent. Spreadsheets include data that were used to evaluate the efficacy of carbon dioxide (CO2)...
To assess the flooding tolerance of Sagittaria latifolia and S. rigida, we assessed three levels of timing of inundation (early- [11 June], mid- [12 July], late-season [12 August]), three levels of duration (short [1 day], mid [5 days], long [10 days]), and four levels of depth (reference plant not treated, shallow [5 cm], moderate [20 cm], deep [45 cm]) on survival and productivity of Sagittaria plants. Plants were produced from seeds of S. latifolia and S. rigida, and from S. latifolia tubers. Sagittaria plants were reared in six 50 m2 outdoor concrete ponds at the USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA, and subjected to various levels of inundation throughout the growing...
This dataset includes the behavioral responses to a broadband sound for common carp in an outdoor concrete pond. Broadband sound (0.06 to 10 kHz) has shown potential as an acoustic deterrent for bigheaded carps, but the response of common carp to broadband sound has not been evaluated. Since common carp are ostariophysians, possessing Weberian ossicles similar to bigheaded carps, it is possible that sound can be used as an acoustical deterrent for all three species.
Datasets describe the outcomes of transporting Yellow Perch and Nile Tilapia at high densities under AQUI-S®20E (10% eugenol). Specifically, data describe the survival, morphometric measurements, behavior/sedation, sedative concentrations, and water chemistry for each species during live transport. This dataset includes laboratory data collected to determine the effects of hydrogen peroxide on nitrification processes in biofilters of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Data from the laboratory studies were used to inform methods used to conduct field trials in pilot- and commercial-scale RAS. Biofilter nitrification was monitored by measuring the levels of total ammonia-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen, and nitrate-nitrogen in experimental aquaria containing a small biofilter before and after hydrogen peroxide was applied to the test system. There are 4 excel workbooks associated with this data set: RASHP Range finding Trial.csv, RASHP Definitive Trial.csv, Hydrogen Peroxide Lab Studies.csv, and DO after HP...

Large lakes provide a variety of ecological services to surrounding cities and communities. Many of these services are supported by ecological processes that are threatened by the increasing prevalence of cyanobacterial blooms which occur as aquatic ecosystems experience cultural eutrophication. Over the past 10 years, Lake Erie experienced cyanobacterial blooms of increasing severity and frequency, which have resulted in impaired drinking water for the surrounding communities. Cyanobacterial blooms may impact ecological processes that support other services, but many of these impacts have not been documented. Secondary production (production of primary consumers) is an important process that supports economically...
We combine cell assays and metabolomics to create a powerful tool, which emerges to elevate the identification of new control chemicals. We combined the use of bigheaded carp fry cell line with metabolite profiling to describe the dose response to thiram. Thiram is a registered pesticide commonly used as a fungicide in the field or as a seed protectant and is known to be toxic to fish. Seven concentrations of thiram were used to dose bighead carp fry cells and silver carp fry cells. We identified 700 metabolomic markers and 41 of those markers exhibited a dose response to thiram in the bighead carp fry cells. We identified 1590 metabolomic markers with 205 of those markers exhibited a dose response to thiram in...
Among the data required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval of an aquaculture drug are the data that characterize the depletion of a drugs marker residue from the edible fillet tissue of fish after exposure. Eugenol is the marker residue for AQUI-S 20E, a product proposed for use as a sedative for fish.Rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss; a representative cold water fish species) was exposed to AQUI-S 20E in water at a temperature of 9 C, a temperature that is representative of the lower range of temperatures where rainbow trout would be sedated. Eighty fish were exposed to a nominal AQUI-S 20E concentration of 100 mg/L for 60 min. Groups of 16 fish were sampled immediately after 60 min of...
