A mineral resource assessment was performed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to assess the potential of undiscovered skarn-hosted tungsten resources in the Northern Rocky Mountain region of eastern Idaho and western Montana. This region has seen moderate tungsten trioxide (WO3) production in the past from a variety of mineralization styles including skarn, vein and replacement, and wolframite-quartz veins. The geology of the area is dominated by large plutons of Cretaceous to Tertiary age, emplaced into a belt of sedimentary rock ranging from Mesoproterozoic to Permian age, and affected by tectonism related to the Sevier and later Laramide orogenies. Known tungsten (W) skarn mineral sites are associated with...

The data release for the geology of Payette National Forest and vicinity, west-central Idaho, is a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)-compliant version that updates the GIS files for the geologic map published in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Professional Paper 1666 (Lund, 2004). The updated digital data present the attribute tables and geospatial features (points, lines and polygons) in the format that meets GeMS requirements. This data release presents the geologic map as shown on the plates and captured in geospatial data for published Professional Paper 1666. Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected in this version. The database represents...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release (ver. 1.2, April 2022) contains a set of previously unpublished geochemical data from project studies of primitive areas in central Idaho, including the Clear Creek-Upper Big Deer Creek Area, the Salmon River Breaks and Sawtooth Primitive Areas, and the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area. The purpose of the USGS Idaho Primitive Area studies, conducted from 1966 to 1984, was to describe the geology, determine petrologic and geochemical characteristics, and evaluate the mineral resource potential of these primitive areas and adjacent study areas. In the case of the Idaho Primitive Area study (Cater and others, 1973), the primitive area covers 1,915 square miles; adjacent...

The data release for Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area and the Magruder Corridor and Special Mining Management Zone Additions to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area, and adjacent areas Idaho and Montana, contains a subset of previously unpublished geochemical data from the 1979-1984 projects. In the case of Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area study (Lund and Esparza, 1990), the purpose of the project was to determine petrologic and geochemical characteristics and to investigate effects of historic mine drainage in the study area. Data for the Magruder Corridor Addition reflect rock geochemistry to document petrologic and geochemical characteristics (Mosier and others, 1981; Lund and others, 1992). Included in...

Snow and meteorological observations were collected over a range of water years (WY) by three research institutions and by citizen scientists to characterize forest effects on snow processes across the Pacific Northwest, USA. Fourteen total study sites cover the western slopes and crest of the Cascade Range in WA and OR, and central and northern ID. Each study location includes one or more paired forest and open area in which to compare snow observations. A range of forest canopy densities and data collection strategies are represented, including paired manual snow courses, snow pits, automated sensors, and time-lapse images of snow measurement poles. Analysis and synthesis of all of these sites are presented in...

Results of a citizen science effort in which students and instructors at the McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) collected snow observations every 1-4 weeks at their field site within Ponderosa State Park (elevation 1540 m), adjacent to Payette Lake, ID. Students documented snow cover within forested versus open areas at each site via photographs and estimates of the continuity of snow cover. Additionally, snow depth and density were measured via snow pits in the forest and the open. Data were entered via a Google Form, and the results recorded in this table. Site Data Citation for full description of the field campaign and sites. Field photographs are archived along with these data, sorted by site name, with timestamp...

This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 1989 across the Idaho Batholith, Payette National Forest, Idaho, by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The primary focus is on geologic elements that relate to the Late Cretaceous Idaho batholith geometry and the development of the Yellow Pine mining district and Stibnite mining area. Twenty MT soundings along one 110-km long profile were acquired during the time period of July 19-27, 1989. This study was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey's Mineral Resources Program in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service.

Water and sediment samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at or near baseflow conditions from 2015-2017 in the East Fork South Fork Salmon River watershed near Yellow Pine, Valley County, Idaho. Soil, rock and tailings samples were collected in June 2015. Sampling focused on Cinnabar Creek, which flows through the Cinnabar mine site, and Sugar Creek, with additional sites selected to place the data into a larger watershed context. Grab samples were taken of the snowpack in January 2017. The water, soil, sediment, and rock samples were as described and the results are presented as separate water and solid data sets.

The data release for the geologic map of the Challis 1 x 2 degrees quadrangle, Idaho, is a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)-compliant version that updates the GIS files for the geologic map published in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Miscellaneous Investigations I-1819 (Fisher and others, 1992). The updated digital data present the attribute tables and geospatial features (points, lines and polygons) in the format that meets GeMS requirements. This data release presents the geologic map as shown on the plates and captured in geospatial data for the published map. Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected in this version. The database represents...

A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center visited sites nine times throughout the breeding season (late May to mid-July) to record counts of grassland birds. Surveyors applied North American Breeding Bird Survey methodology to obtain counts at On-, Near-, and Off-road Stops, but unlike the North American Breeding Bird Survey, which features a single survey at each site, three replicate surveys were conducted on back-to-back-to-back days during each survey period to facilitate estimation of detection and occupancy probabilities. Assignment of surveyors to individual sites followed a design protocol that allows observer effects to also be estimated. The biologist visited each site once...

The updated digital data present the attribute tables and geospatial features (points, lines and polygons) in the format that meets GeMS requirements. This data release presents the geologic map as shown on the plates and captured in geospatial data for the published map. Minor errors, such as mistakes in line decoration or differences between the digital data and the map image, are corrected in this version....

These data are for a geochronologic study of emplacement ages for plutons of the Cretaceous Idaho batholith and detrital zircon ages for metasedimentary rocks, west-central Idaho. Zircon from six samples of discrete plutons across a regional transect were dated by sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP). SHRIMP U-Pb ages of igneous rocks connect the igneous activity to structural history, crustal depths, and origins of epigenetic gold-silver-antimony-tungsten±mercury mineral deposits. Zircon from four samples of metasedimentary rocks in the southern part of the central Idaho mineral province were dated—three by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) methods and one by SHRIMP...
