In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, collected groundwater-level altitude data and water-quality samples from monitoring wells at the Petro-Chemical Systems, Inc. (Turtle Bayou) Superfund Site in Liberty County, Texas to evaluate the status of groundwater contamination at this previously remediated site. The dataset includes groundwater-level altitudes and field properties measured at 11 monitoring wells along with data from environmental and quality assurance/quality control water quality samples collected at each well. Water-quality samples were analyzed for a suite of volatile and semivolatile organic compounds.
Two non-native bigheaded carp species have invaded the Illinois River system and are a potential threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem. Discharges from industry, wastewater treatment plants, and urban and agricultural runoff, may be a factor contributing to the stalling of the upstream movement of the bigheaded carp population front near Illinois Waterway mile 278. In 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey collected 4 sets of water samples under a range of seasonal and hydrologic conditions from 3 locations upstream and 4 locations downstream from river mile 278 using a Lagrangian-style sampling strategy. Water samples were analyzed for over 639 constituents of which 280 were detected at least once, including many anthropogenic...
This dataset contains a compilation of concentrations of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in groundwater and surface water sampled at the former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey. Measured VOCs include trichloroethene (TCE), cis- 1,2-dichloroethene (cisDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). Semi-volatile organic compound 1,4-dioxane is also included. Measured PFAS include perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoic...
The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 71 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies in Stanislaus and Merced counties of California during 2020-2021. The wells were sampled for the Modesto-Turlock-Merced Domestic-Supply Aquifer Study Unit of the State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. The study unit was defined by the extent of the Modesto, Turlock, and Merced subbasins of the San Joaquin Valley groundwater basin. The study unit was divided into 62 grid cells and one or more domestic...
The Triangle Chemical Company Superfund site, in Orange County, Texas, was a chemical mixing and blending facility in the 1970s. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), poor waste management practices resulted in soil and groundwater contamination and fish-kills in Coon Bayou (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2023). The Five-Year Review of the Triangle Superfund Site indicated groundwater in the upper water-bearing zone might be migrating off-site toward the southwest (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2016). There are concerns regarding potential risks to human health from contaminated soil vapor in existing or future structures in the area. To evaluate the status of volatile organic compound...
These data comprise the target and non-target VOC measurements collected from 1999 to 2016 from the shallow and deep unsaturated zone at the Amargosa Desert Research Site adjacent to a low-level radioactive waste and hazardous chemical waste facility near Beatty, Nevada. All data are compiled in electronic text files that are included with this release.
These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This raster data set delineates the predicted probability of elevated nitrate concentrations in groundwater in the Eagle River watershed valley-fill aquifer, Eagle County, North-Central Colorado, 2006-2007. This data set was developed by a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey, Eagle County, the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District, the Town of Eagle, the Town of Gypsum, and the Upper Eagle Regional Water Authority....
This data release includes tables and time-series plots of results for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analyzed in samples of groundwater used for public supply that were collected by the USGS National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project and the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program Priority Basin Project (GAMA-PBP) during 2013-19; results for associated quality-control samples also are included. All samples were analyzed by the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) using laboratory schedules 4436 and 4437. The table of groundwater data includes VOC results as reported by the laboratory, along with results that represent the application...
The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 38 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies in Butte, Sutter, and Yuba counties of California during 2021. The wells were sampled for the Butte-Sutter-Yuba Domestic-Supply Aquifer Study Unit of the State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. The study unit was defined by the extent of the Butte, Los Molinos, North and South Yuba, Sutter, Vina, and Wyandotte Creek groundwater subbasins of the Sacramento Valley and an uplands area adjacent and...

In 2023, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, collected groundwater-level altitude and water-quality data from monitoring wells at the Petro-Chemical Systems, Inc. (Turtle Bayou) Superfund Site in Liberty County, Texas. The data were collected to obtain information that could be used to provide an update on the status of groundwater contamination at the site. This data release documents the groundwater-level altitudes, field properties, and water-quality data obtained in 2023 from six of the 11 monitoring wells where similar data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in August and September 2020 (Braun and Becher 2022). The environmental and quality-control...
