Oblique aerial view of Spirit Lake with Mount Rainier in the background. On May 18, 1980, part of the Mount St. Helens debris avalanche slid into Spirit Lake, raising its level nearly 60 meters and damming its natural outlet to a higher level. Water displaced by the avalanche surged up the surrounding hill slopes, washing the blown-down timber from the lateral blast into the lake. Water is currently is being pumped out of Spirit Lake to prevent it from overtopping its dam. September 1, 1982. Skamania County, Washington.
