A two-dimensional model and digital flood-inundation maps were developed for a 30-mile reach of the Wabash River near the Interstate 64 (I-64) Bridge near Grayville, Illinois. The flood-inundation maps, which can be accessed through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Flood Inundation Mapping Science web site at http://water.usgs.gov/osw/flood_inundation/, depict estimates of the areal extent and depth of flooding corresponding to selected water levels (stages) at the USGS streamgage on the Wabash River at Mount Carmel, Ill (USGS station number 03377500). Near-real-time stages at this streamgage may be obtained on the internet from the USGS National Water Information System at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ or the National...

Digital flood-inundation maps for a 10.2-mile reach of the Wabash River at Memorial Bridge at Vincennes, Indiana, were created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. The flood-inundation maps, which can be accessed through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Science Web site at http://water.usgs.gov/osw/flood_inundation/, depict estimates of the areal extent and depth of flooding corresponding to selected water levels (stages) at the USGS streamgage on the Wabash River at Memorial Bridge at Vincennes, Indiana (station number 03343010). These data were collected using a 2 mHz TRDI StreamPro acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in 2012 and a 1200 kHz Rio Grande ADCP in 2013, both deployed from a moving boat. The data were georeferenced with a Hemisphere Crescent A100 differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with submeter accuracy. The data have been depth-averaged over the entire measured portion of the water column and temporally averaged over 30-second intervals to reduce noise. These data were collected as a part of a combined field campaign with Purdue University which included simultaneous egg and larvae sampling. Data were processed using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and others, 2013). Any data assigned a value of...
Sandbars of large sand-bedded rivers of the Central U.S. serve important ecological functions to many species, including the endangered Interior Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) (ILT). ILT are colonial birds which feed on fish and nest primarily on riverine sandbars during their annual breeding season of approximately May through July, depending on region. During this time, ILT require bare sand of sufficient elevation so as not to be inundated during the period between nest initiation and fledging of hatchlings. ILT were originally listed as endangered due in part to decreases in available sandbar habitat from river channelization and impoundment. Sandbars in Central U.S. rivers used by ILT are highly dynamic,...
