This data release contains habitat survey data (quantitative and qualitative) and biological assemblage data (periphyton, macroinvertebrate, and fish) collected among 8 stream sites within the Tribal lands of the Pearl River Community of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI). The MBCI is a Federally recognized Native American Tribe and the Pearl River Community, located near Philadelphia, Mississippi, is responsible for protecting the quality of surface waters from point and non-point sources of pollution and restoring waters considered impaired of their designated use. The MBCI cooperated with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to conduct a baseline study at selected stream sites within and contiguous to...

A series of linear regression models were developed and calibrated for the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. The linear regression models were calibrated using acoustic and suspended-sediment concentration data collected from March through November 2016 and 2017. The estimates of suspended-sediment concentrations from the linear regression were used to calculate loads. The calibrated models were used to improve understanding of sediment transport processes and increase accuracy of estimating sediment concentrations and loads for the Lower Minnesota River, the Mississippi River, and Lake Pepin, as part of the associated report, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2018–5165 (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20185165).

To improve flood-frequency estimates at rural streams in Alabama, annual exceedance probability (AEP) flows at gaged streams in Alabama and regional-regression equations, used to estimate AEP flows for ungaged streams in Alabama, were developed using current geospatial data, additional statistical methods, and annual peak-flow data through the 2015 water year. The regional-regression equations were derived from statistical analyses of peak-flow data, basin characteristics associated with 217 streamgages, and the generalized skew from Bulletin 17B (Interagency Advisory Committee on Water Data, 1982). Four flood regions were identified based on residuals from the regional-regression analyses. Regional regression...

This dataset describes the quantity and morphology of microplastics in water, surficial sediment, sediment core, fish, and shellfish samples from Lake Mead National Recreation Area (Nevada/Arizona). Water and surficial sediment samples were collected once at 9 locations. A sediment core (33 cm long) was extracted from Las Vegas Bay to assess changes in microplastic deposition over time. Striped bass (Morone saxatilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis), and Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) were sampled at a subset of locations to assess biological uptake of microplastics. Sampling and analysis methods are described in the Processing Steps section of the metadata. All samples were...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides continuously-measured water-quality data collected from two sites on Milford Lake, Kansas, during July 26-27 and August 30-31, 2015. All data are reported as raw measured values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. Water-quality monitors were used to measure water temperature, specific conductance, turbidity, pH, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, and dissolved oxygen at fifteen-minute intervals. This dataset includes all continuously measured data collected at two short-term, fixed-site locations as part of a study to evaluate the spatial variability of harmful algal blooms in Milford Lake, Kansas.

Data from 316 boreholes (including coreholes) that penetrated buried pre-Middle Jurassic basement rocks that lie beneath Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain sedimentary deposits in Florida and Alabama were compiled from non-proprietary, mostly published sources in order to support subsurface geologic mapping, geologic interpretation of geophysical data (aeromagnetic, gravity, seismic), topical studies as in geochronology, and applications ranging from mineral, energy, and water resources to earthquake hazards. Boreholes into bedrock beneath the coastal plain near the Fall Line in Alabama reveal buried extensions of geologic units exposed in the Piedmont, and those near the Gulf coast and beneath Florida provide rare...

This dataset includes 1km resolution monthly timescale estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) for the 2000-2015 timespan. These new SSEBop-WB estimates were developed by combining a previously published long-term annual average evapotranspiration map based on water balance constraints with the SSEBop remote sensing ET product (see Associated Items). The combination aims to leverage the advantages of each approach in gaining both the temporal resolution of remote sensing data and the long-term magnitude constraints of ground-based data. This data release also includes other supporting data associated with the publication of these estimation methods in a concurrent journal article. Analyses in the journal article included...

An interdisciplinary and multiagency study was conducted in southern Florida to examine harmful algal bloom (HAB) dynamics on the Caloosahatchee River, which drains from Lake Okeechobee to the west into the Gulf of Mexico. Using in-situ mesocosm experiments, ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, and urea were altered from ambient conditions to determine the effects on cyanotoxin biosynthesis gene presence and quantity as measured via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Eight experiments were conducted seasonally from May 2019 through July 2021 at the W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam. The experimental installations consisted of three floating metal cradles each containing four opaque fiberglass chambers filled with...

The data in this data release are from an effort focused on understanding social vulnerability to water insecurity, resiliency demonstrated by institutions, and conflict or crisis around water resource management. This data release focuses on definitions and metrics of resilience in water management institutions. Water resource managers, at various scales, are tasked with making complex and time-sensitive decisions in the face of uncertainty, competing objectives, and difficult tradeoffs. To do this, they must incorporate data, tacit knowledge, cultural and organizational norms, and individual or institutional values in a way that maintains consistent and predictable operations under normal circumstances, while...
The spatial extents of verified irrigated lands were compiled from various federal and state sources across the nation and combined into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) geodatabase for the purpose of model training and validation. In cooperation with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), researchers at the University of Wisconsin (UW) generated a nation-wide map of irrigated lands using remote-sensing techniques that will be incorporated into future irrigation water-use models. The verified spatial data varies in scope, accuracy, and time period represented, but in general represents GIS coverages (polygons) of agricultural land irrigated for at least some period during 2002–17. Data from 14 states were provided...

Geomorphometry for Streams and Floodplains in the Chesapeake and Delaware Watersheds was generated as part of the project Quantifying Floodplain Ecological Processes and Ecosystem Services in the Delaware River Watershed funded through the William Penn Foundation's Delaware Watershed Research fund. This dataset contains geomorphometry for streams and floodplains in the Chesapeake and Delaware River watersheds. Geomorphometry is a quantitative representation of landscape surface form (e.g., channel width and depth) obtained from digital elevation models (DEMs). The dataset contains geomorphometry derived from running 3-m DEMs through the Floodplain and Channel Evaluation Tool (FACET) version 0.1.0. FACET generates...

The dataset includes flood-frequency data and related files for 211 streamgages operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Louisiana and parts of the surrounding states of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas as well as assembled explanatory variables (physical, climatic, and land-use characteristics of the basins). The data in this release were used in generalized least-squares (GLS ) regression analyses (Stedinger and Tasker, 1985) to generate equations used to predict annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs) at ungaged locations on streams in the study area (Ensminger and others, 2021). Flood-frequency analyses were conducted using annual peak-flow data from the 1877-2016 water years to estimate streamflows...
