The 303(d) Listed Impaired Waters program system provides impaired water data and impaired water features reflecting river segments, lakes, and estuaries designated under Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act. Each State will establish Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for these waters. Note the CWA Section 303(d) list of impaired waters does not represent waters that are impaired but have an EPA-approved TMDL established, impaired waters for which other pollution control mechanisms are in place and expected to attain water quality standards, or waters impaired as a result of pollution and is not caused by a pollutant; therefore, the "Impaired Waters" layers do not represent all impaired waters reported in a state's...

This data release includes physical and chemical characteristics of field collected sediment and soil samples in Missouri representing potential sediment/soil that may enter the water column during construction related activities. Three samples were collected, including Spring River sediment, Osage River bank soil and Columbia crushed limestone. The impacts of increased suspended solid level due to the three samples on early-stage freshwater mussels were examined using three freshwater mussel species, including Fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea), Arkansas Brokenray (Lampsilis reeveiana), and Washboard (Megalonaias nervosa). Specifically, toxicity endpoints including survival, biomass, and growth of juveniles were...
A study using multiple techniques provided insight into tectonic influences on ground water systems; the results can help to understand ground water systems in the tectonically active western United States and other parts of the world. Ground water in the San Bernardino Valley (Arizona, United States and Sonora, Mexico) is the main source of water for domestic use, cattle ranching (the primary industry), and the preservation of threatened and endangered species. To improve the understanding of ground water occurrence, movement, and sustainability, an investigation was conducted using a number of complementary methods, including major ion geochemistry, isotope hydrology, analysis of gases dissolved in ground water,...

The Colorado River Basin, poor in water and rich in energy resources, is examined to see if water quality can be sustained for U.S. and Mexican users. Activities to mine, process, transport, and convert resources to energy and to reclaim the land all require water, although development is expected to continue in spite of uncertainties. Projections of water requirements for different energy sources are summarized for the 1990-2000 time period. Restrictions on water supply derive from both quantity limitations and such institutional barriers as water rights and contracts. Projections of the sources and occurrences of salinity levels and pollutants are detailed for each section of the Basin. Salinity is concluded to...

This data describes the relative luminescence units (RLUs) and relative fluorescence units (RFUs) of lysates of aryl-hydrocarbon responsive chemically-activated luciferase expression human hepatoma HG2L7.5c1 cells which were exposed for 4 or 24 h to beta-naphthoflavone dilutions, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin dilutions, or dilutions of groundwater extracts collected from wells within or near an oil-contaminated area. This data also describes RFUs of bovine serum albumin standards which were used to convert the RFUs of the cell lysates to protein with which to normalize the RLUs of the cell lysates.

Advances in drilling technique have facilitated a rapid increase in hydrocarbon extraction from energy shales, including the Williston Basin in central North America. This area overlaps with the Prairie Pothole Region and greater than 35% of wetlands are less than or equal to 1 km from a petroleum-related well. Legacy practices often released saline co-produced waters (brines) that were chloride rich wastes, affecting wetland water quality directly or persisting in sediments. Despite the potential threat of brine contamination to aquatic habitats, there has been little research into their ecological effects. We capitalized on a gradient of legacy brine-contaminated wetlands in northeast Montana to conduct laboratory...

Intermontane basins in the Trans-Pecos region of westernmost Texas and northern Chihuahua, Mexico, are target areas for disposal of interstate municipal sludge and have been identified as possible disposal sites for low-level radioactive waste. Understanding ground water movement within and between these basins is needed to assess potential contaminant fate and movement. Four associated basin aquifers are evaluated and classified; the Red Light Draw Aquifer, the Northwest Eagle Flat Aquifer, the Southeast Eagle Flat Aquifer, and the El Cuervo Aquifer. Encompassed on all but one side by mountains and local divides, the Red Light Draw Aquifer has the Rio Grande as an outlet for both surface drainage and ground water...

This dataset contains concentrations of 25 organochlorine pesticides, 6 industrial or personal care products, 6 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardant congeners, and 15 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners in brain, muscle, gonad, and liver tissues of white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus). All concentrations are reported on a wet-weight basis. Fish samples were collected from the Columbia River directly adjacent to and immediately downstream from the Hanford Site in Washington State. The site was used as a weapons-grade plutonium plant from 1944 to 1987, at which time liquid effluents were discharged directly into the Columbia River. Contaminants from past and present waste leaks from the Hanford...

Corrected and aggregated temperature data from the subsurface of three permeable pavement types [permeable interlocking concrete pavers (PICP), pervious concrete (PC), and porous asphalt (PA)] collected in Madison, Wisconsin between November 1 and April 30 (cold-weather periods), 2014-2021 are in this data release. Temperature data was corrected through removal of intermittent erroneous values such as sudden and extreme changes in data values that could not be explained. Raw corrected datasets containing one minute data for PICP, PC, and PA are part of this data release. An average hourly temperature dataset, produced by averaging raw corrected data for the nine probes at each corresponding depth (0, 15, and 30...
