We have developed autonomous and high precision sensor arrays to monitor growth of individual native plants along with local environmental conditions, coupled with wireless data loggers that can provide real-time data available to managers and the wider public. We deployed an experimental set of these sensors, integrated with a weather station, 2 webcams, and a live web portal (construction in progress) to showcase how this real time information can be useful to relevant managers while also raising awareness of the challenges of climate change adaptation and Hawaiian plant conservation in general. The Blueprint 2.0 Data Gallery is a website dedicated to the final Blueprint 2.0 spatial data. This website is located on the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative’s Conservation Planning Atlas. On this website, users can explore the final Blueprint 2.0 spatial data as well as the spatial data used to create Blueprint 2.0. This website features an interactive mapping feature so that users who do not have access to desktop GIS can explore the spatial data.
The rivers and streams of the Southeastern United States are extremely diverse, containing numerous threatened and endangered species. In fact, southeastern rivers contain more at-risk freshwater fish and invertebrates than any other region of the country.The anthropogenic fragmentation of river habitats through dams and poorly designed culverts is one of the primary threats to aquatic species in the United States. Species populations are in a state of flux due to the cumulative and interacting impacts of climate change and human stressors across landscapes. Invasive spread, pathogen outbreaks, land-use activities, and especially climate disruption and its associated impacts—severe drought (see Figure 3 or the GPLCC), reduced stream flow, increased wildfire frequency, extended growing season, and extreme weather events—are increasing, and in some cases accelerating. These impacts are outpacing management and conservation responses intended to support trust species and their critical habitats. This project used species distribution modeling, population genetics, and geospatial analysis of historical vs. modern vertebrate populations to identify climate change refugia and population connectivity across the Sierra Nevada. It is hypothesized that climate change refugia will increase persistence and stability of populations and, as a result, maintain higher genetic diversity. This work helps managers assess the need to include connectivity and refugia in climate change adaptation strategies. Results help Sierra Nevada land managers allocate limited resources, aid future scenario assessment at landscape scales, and develop a performance measure for assessing resilience.

The Peninsular Florida LCC (PFLCC) uses a science-based, data-rich approach to define priorities across the landscape. In order to communicate those priorities and underlying information effectively to a broad range of stakeholders, PFLCC wishes to work with the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) to develop a simple interactive viewer for data and products derived from science activities that will provide information to guide natural resource management decisions.. Developed alongside a scenario planning process, this spatially explicit analysis assesses key stressors on Great Basin systems in order to inform alternative futures. Project outputs include land cover, plant and wildlife species and community distributions, urban development, and future habitat under climate scenarios. The Water Harvesting Assessment Toolbox is a prototype decision aid designed to help communities in the Southwest US understand the role water harvesting can play in meeting water resource challenges while providing multiple additional benefits. It also introduces water harvesting techniques and suggests ways to implement locally appropriate water harvesting efforts. The Toolbox is intended for a wide range of users. A century of fire exclusion across many forest types in the western U.S. has resulted in unforeseen changes, including high fuel accumulations, high densities of trees, and increasing dominance of fire-intolerant species. These changes are particularly acute in forests that historically experienced high frequency and low severity fires. In response, the NPS Pacific-West region supports a large prescribed fire program to reduce understory fuels and forest density. Grassland-shrubland prairie has been important to the livelihoods of generations of ranchers; to the hunting community because of prized game species; and to endangered species, such as the black-capped vireo, as habitat. In the past, the interests of ranchers, hunters, and endangered species have come into conflict because of increasing pressures on the prairie from land use conversion, new development, and habitat fragmentation. Greater collaboration in advancing mutual interests would greatly expand and improve Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative partners’ efforts to conserve the remaining prairie habitats of the southern Great Plains.

This project integrates projections from two climate downscaling approaches into a series of future climate scenarios that will be used to assess the vulnerability of resources and ecosystem services within the Aleutian and Bering Sea Islands LCC. The online tool is a web-based tool allowing users to find relevant information for conservation planning and about BMP. The tool has two components, one for conservation planning by conservation organizations and one for implementation of BMP by landowners and land managers (described in the BMP section below).
