This dataset was used to summarize and analyze the mortality factors recorderd on dead trees in the Sierra Nevada Forest Dynamics Plot Network, which is managed by the Sequoia and Kings Canyon Field station of the U.S. Geological Survey's Western Ecological Research Center. Each row of the dataset represents an individual dead tree. These are dead trees that were recorded in the network from 1998 to 2010 for the subset of plots as described in the associated manuscript; These data support the following: Das, A.J., Stephenson, N.L., Davis, K.P. 2016. Why do trees die? Characterizing the drivers of background tree mortality. Ecology. 97(10): 2616-2627, https://doi.org/10.1002/ecy.1497

Density estimates of four mammal species in the upper subalpine and alpine zones of the Sierra Nevada range, 2008 - 2012. The estimates were derived from variable distance data collected 3-4 per year along each of 21 transects (10 km in length). The transects were randomly selected from a pool of 53 potential routes. Nine transects were sampled in 2008, 12 were sampled in 2009, 19 were sampled in 2010, 21 were sampled in 2011, and 17 were sampled in 2012. All counts were done in July and August each year. Replicate samples within a given year were done within 2-8 days of each other. All counts were done by single observers. The spreadsheet has six worksheets, including three with density estimates for each species...

These data are associated with an article published in Global Ecology and Conservation (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2020.e01173) that describes climate's cascading effects on disease, predation, and hatching sucess in the Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus). The Yosemite toad currently is federally listed as threatened under the U.S. Endanered Species Act based upon reported population declines and vulnerability to climate and other global-change factors. The species occurs only in California’s central Sierra Nevada at medium to sub-alpine elevations. Lands throughout its range largely are protected from development, but climate and other global-change factors potentially can limit populations.

This publication presents data collected within meadows from samples used to assess meadow plant community responses to recreational pack stock as part of a USGS Natural Resources Preservation Project. High elevation meadows are a vital ecological component of mountain systems throughout western North America. They provide critical habitat for wildlife, supply key ecosystem services, and are favored destinations for people visiting the mountains. The biophysical characteristics of meadows are highly variable, especially related to hydrologic regimes and associated plant community types. In the semi-arid landscape of the Sierra, water availability operates at multiple scales strongly influencing meadow plant community...

Density estimates of four mammal species in the upper subalpine and alpine zones of the Sierra Nevada range, 2008 - 2012. The estimates were derived from variable distance data collected 3-4 times per year at point count stations randomly located along line transects. There were 21 transects (10 km in length) that had been randomly selected from a pool of 53 potential routes, with 10 point count stations along each transect (minimum of 200 m spacing between stations). 45 stations were sampled in 2008 (5 stations on each of 9 transects), 60 stations were sampled in 2009 (5 stations on each of 12 transects),190 stations were sampled in 2010 (10 stations on each of 19 transects), 210 stations were sampled in 2011 (10...

We produced this data set as part of a larger, integrated study to assess the statuses of populations of Anaxyrus canorus and the causes of observed effects on fitness at field sites, primarily in Yosemite National Park near Tioga Pass, from 1996 to 2001. To assess and document the depths to the tops of individual A. canorus and Pseudacris regilla egg masses and to the sediments, we measured water depths at masses of both species. We used a meter stick to measure the depth (nearest mm) where female A. canorus deposited individual egg masses, and the distance from the water’s surface to the tops of those masses, at several breeding sites across 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. We did the same for egg masses of P. regilla...

Comma-separated values (.csv) file containing data related to mercury and biogeochemical parameters in surface water and aquatic sediment collected from U.S. National Parks in 2014-2015.
These data represent occupancy surveys conducted in long-term monitoring sites in Yosemite National Park in 2018 for three anurans, the Yosemite Toad (Anaxyrus canorus), the Sierran Treefrog (Pseudacris sierra), and the Sierra Nevada Yellow-legged Frog (Rana sierrae). The data include independent double-observer surveys and time-to-detection data to calculate detection probabilities and account for false negatives, or the failure to detect a species at a site where it occurs. These data support the following publication: Schimel, D.S., 2018, Editorial: Ecological Applications, v. 28, no. 4, p. 869–870, https://doi.org/10.1002/eap.1735.

The U.S. Geological Survey has operated the Precipitation Chemistry Quality Assurance (PCQA) Project to evaluate and document the data quality for the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) for 40 years. The PCQA is primarily focused on data quality for the NADP National Trends Network (NTN) and Mercury Deposition Network (MDN). The PCQA implements programs to evaluate the variability and bias of NADP data. The programs are described in several USGS reports: 1. See, R.B., Willoughby, T.C., and Brooks, M.H., 1990. Programs and analytical methods for the U.S. Geological Survey Acid Rain Quality Assurance Project: U.S. Geological Water-Resources Investigations Report 90-4029. 2. Latysh, N.E., and Wetherbee,...
This data release presents point data associated with the geologic and geophysical maps of the Sierra Nevada Digital Earth Science Atlas led by the California Geological Survey and U.S. Geological Survey. Data include principal fact information for new gravity measurements collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from 2012 to 2023 and for existing gravity measurements compiled from 21 sources. Nearly 29,000 gravity measurements were processed to complete Bouguer and isostatic gravity anomalies to provide information on crustal structure, such as depth extent of plutons and arc terranes, and geometry of Cenozoic basins developed along the margins of the Sierra Nevada. Density and magnetic property measurements were...

We produced this data set as part of a larger, integrated study to assess the statuses of populations of Anaxyrus canorus and the causes of observed effects on fitness at field sites, primarily in Yosemite National Park near Tioga Pass, from 1996 to 2001. ENCLOSURES We used field enclosures to test the hypothesis that exposure to ambient UV-B caused embryo mortality in 1996 and 1998. We covered the top of each enclosure with one or two types of thin plastic sheeting. One type was transparent to the solar spectrum. The other type filtered UV-B below 314 nm (UV-B<314) but was otherwise transparent to solar radiation. Laying both types together over the top of an enclosure did not alter the transmission characteristics...

We produced this data set as part of a larger, integrated study to assess the statuses of populations of Anaxyrus canorus and the causes of observed effects on fitness at field sites, primarily in Yosemite National Park near Tioga Pass, from 1996 to 2001. From 1999 to 2001, we deployed Optic StowAway Temperature loggers (Onset Computer Corporation; Bourne, Massachusetts, USA) to measure minimum daily air temperatures at various breeding sites during embryogenesis for A. canorus. These measurements enabled us to determine relations between air temperatures at individual breeding sites relative to air temperatures measured at the automated weather station in Dana Meadows (DAN) in the heart of our study area. We measured...

We produced this data set as part of a larger, integrated study to assess the statuses of populations of Anaxyrus canorus and the causes of observed effects on fitness at field sites, primarily in Yosemite National Park near Tioga Pass, from 1996 to 2001. We assessed the extent of annual mortality among embryos of A. canorus and Pseudacris regilla variously among breeding sites and years by measuring hatching success in as many individual egg masses as possible, given logistical constraints, at sites we surveyed annually from 1996 to 2000. We visually evaluated each individual embryo in an egg mass in situ while kneeling alongside it immediately before, at, or very soon after hatching (when individual capsules remained...

This dataset was used as part of a continent-wide analysis of tree fecundity and its association with climate and tree size. This dataset consists of: plotinfo.csv, which contains basic attribute information for the field plots where the data were collected; seeddata.csv, which contains the data for seeds collected (how many, what type, etc.); trapxycoord.csv, which contains location and identification information for the seed traps used to collect the seeds; treexycoord.csv, which contains location and attribute information for the standing trees in the plot where the seeds were collected; and treedata.csv, which contains data on the size and species of standing trees in the plot where the seeds were collected.
These tables include data from 25 long-term forest plots located in either Sequoia or Yosemite national park. Trees in these plots (established between 1982 and 2001) are censused annually for mortality and measured for diameter every 4 to 6 years. Plots were mostly 1 hectare (ha) in size (range 0.9 – 2.5 ha) and contained at least two 25 by 25 meter seedling sub-plots to monitor natural seedling recruitment. The largest plot, at 2.5 ha, included four such seedling sub-plots. Each sub-plot was divided into 5 by 5 meter quadrats. In almost all the plots these seedling sub-plots were established in 1999, but four plots (those with names starting with FF) were added to the study in 2002 and seedling data was only available...
