"This Order transfers to the designated Minister for the Northern Pipeline Act, in relation to the pipeline only, the powers, duties and functions of the Minister of the Environment to administer, manage and control certain National Park reserve lands required for the pipeline."
Estimating population densities of small mammals (< 100 g) has typically been carried out by intensive livetrapping, but this technique may be stressful to animals and the effort required is considerable. Here, we used camera traps to detect small mammal presence and assessed if this provided a feasible alternative to livetrapping for density estimation. During 2010-2012, we used camera trapping in conjunction with mark-recapture livetrapping to estimate the density of northern red-backed voles (Myodes rutilus) and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) in the boreal forest of Yukon, Canada. Densities for these 2 species ranged from 0.29 to 9.21 animals/ha and 0 to 5.90 animals/ha, respectively, over the course of this...
Reconstructing climates of the past relies on a variety of evidence from a large number of sites to capture the varied features of climate and the spatial heterogeneity of climate change. This review summarizes available information from diverse Holocene paleoenvironmental records across eastern Beringia (Alaska, westernmost Canada and adjacent seas), and it quantifies the primary trends of temperature- and moisture-sensitive records based in part on midges, pollen, and biogeochemical indicators (compiled in the recently published Arctic Holocene database, and updated here to v2.1). The composite time series from these proxy records are compared with new summaries of mountain-glacier and lake-level fluctuations,...

Aspects of the thaw lake cycle were investigated in Old Crow Flats (OCF), a 5600 km2 peatland with thousands of thermokarst lakes in the continuous permafrost of northern Yukon. It is located in the traditional territory of the Vuntut Gwitch'n, who expressed concern that climatic change may be affecting the permafrost and lakes of OCF. Field data collected in 2008-2011 provided the first assessment of spatial variability in permafrost temperatures across the treeline ecotone in OCF. Lake-bottom temperatures were recorded near the shores of four thermokarst lakes and talik configuration was defined beneath the lakes by jet-drilling to determine conditions controlling permafrost degradation in the area. Analytical...
