This carbon sequestration research is part of a new pilot grassland conservation program to protect at-risk grasslands from conversion to cropland in the northern Great Plains. Natural resources partners have leveraged more than $3 million in private and federal funding to support an innovative program that extends protection of privately-owned grasslands that have expired under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). In the past two years alone, the number of CRP acres nationally has dropped from 31.2 million to 27 million. Of the 4.2-million-acre-decline, lands lost in North Dakota and Montana accounted for 1.6 million acres, or 38 percent. The program aims to encourage private landowners to conserve CRP grasslands...

Understanding the physiological impacts of climate change on arid lands species is a critical step towards ensuring the resilience and persistence of such species under changing temperature and moisture regimes. Varying degrees of vulnerability among different species will largely determine their future distributions in the face of climate change. Studies have indicated that Northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States are likely to become climate change hotspots, experiencing significantly drier and warmer average conditions by the end of the 21st century. However, relatively few studies have examined specifically the physiological effects of climate change on species inhabiting this region. This manuscript...

This R code (Nest_Cards_QC.R) is used to process the raw legacy nest card data (1985 - 2019) and produce the quality controlled legacy nest card data for analysis and sharing. This code does not quality control the double searched plots (R2 plots in 1995-99), which is done in the file ‘PrepData.R’. Basic operations include transforming missing value to a common code, transforming other variable to match the data dictionary for nest cards, and resolving non-unique observer initials. The code requires the raw data (“1985-2019_Nest Cards_10-24-19_cleaned.xlsx”) and the table of observer names (“Observer Names_1985-2019_10-24-19.xlsx”). The code writes the QC nest card file “Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”. Mostly obseration...

Observer-specific population indices for the USFWS Region Migratory Bird Management Arctic Coastal Plain study area. The survey consists of low-level aerial observations of waterfowl on a stratified strip transect design. The resulting data frame is several indices separated by observer and calculated using a standard ratio estimator. These data are output from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial. The data used to produce these estimates contain known errors. Many but not all of these errors are corrected within the R package AKaerial. These data are presented for historical purposes only. See https://github.com/USFWS/ACP-Mapping and comments within...

Montane Conifer Connectivity of areas of high elevation and high human footprint in the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative study area. This application provides Montane Conifer Connectivity for 2000 and 2080 (A1B).The three primary geospatial layers used in this analysis were a digital elevation model (DEM), a vegetation layer, and a human footprint layer. Due to the geographic extent of the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative, digital elevation models from different sources had to be used to create one seamless DEM. The digital elevation models were obtained from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), the United States Geologic Survey, and the Government of the Yukon Territory....

While wildlife species do not respect political boundaries, conservation planning and implementation is often restricted by them. Thus, regionally rare species can be placed in the unenviable position of not being prioritized by any jurisdiction that they inhabit due to competition for scarce conservation resources. A regional conservation framework will enable states to cooperate toward common goals and share the costs and accomplishments of regionally conserving at risk species. However, the development of a regional conservation framework is inhibited by patchy species occurrence data. These data gaps can be informed by species distribution models. This project will compile available mussel data, develop species...

The purpose of this project is to determine if a newly formed rapid on the Colorado River is acting as a barrier to invasive non-native fish moving upstream from Lake Mead into the Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP). These non-native fish would threaten native desert fishes upstream to include the endangered Razorback Sucker and the Humpback Chub. The project will fill knowledge gaps on fish movement, species composition, and population dynamics in this minimally studied section of the Colorado River, and inform managers on whether active management actions (e.g. native fish translocations; non-native removals) may be required to conserve native fishes in the western Grand Canyon.

R code that takes in the nest capture history data (chdata.csv), reformats it for model fitting in Program Mark via the R package RMark. A series of models of increasing complexity are fit and compared using AIC. Output is written to text files for each model but is generally not used or saved. Code can be run to generate model results and R workspaces/ object to inspect parameter estimates. The primary purpose of this code is to explore model structures for predicting detection and as an attempt to reproduce historically used parameter estimates in past nest plot reports (e.g., Fischer et al. 2017 and earlier). Results from ‘Model 7’ are most similar to detection estimates used in the past.

This project will be focused on hosting 2-3 workshops in 2013 to train people to conduct the Springs Stewardship Institute’s spring assessment protocol and promote it as a standardized method. This will facilitate standardized data collection across the landscape that can contribute to a broad-scale inventory and assessment of springs, seeps, and aquatic resources throughout the Desert LCC.

R code that takes in the nest capture history data (chdata.csv), reformats it for model fitting in the Bayesian MCMC software JAGS via the R package jagsUI. Various generalized linear mixed models are fit using a Huggins two occasion capture history model structure as in Program Mark. A series of models of increasing complexity are fit and compared using DIC. Model text is written to text files for each model but is generally not used or saved. Posteriors are saved as Rworkspaces or written to text files for use in population estimation (nostpop.R). Code can be run to generate model results and R workspaces/objects to inspect parameter estimates. The primary purpose of this code is to compare various mixed model...

This project will supply data to support various components of the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy’s (SECAS) Southeast Conservation Blueprint (Blueprint). SARP routinely compiles data, analyzes, and priorities aquatic barriers and all areas covered by the Blueprint except for West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands. These data and subsequent analyses are utilized by SECAS to derive a network complexity indicator. This project will enable SARP to provide a more complete assessment for West Virginia to make it more comparable to the rest of the Southeast. Additionally, SARP will provide barrier information for the US Virgin Islands so that SECAS can expand the network complexity analysis to the Caribbean...

The WBPHS_AK bird observation data are archived as two separate datasets: 1) the raw data as originally transcribed by survey observers; and 2) the data as edited via a quality-control (QC) process. Among other things, the QC process removed records of certain non-waterfowl species, and it changed some species codes to meet the MBM-Alaska Waterfowl Program’s standardized format for transect waterfowl surveys. The QC dataset is that which MBM-Alaska uses for analyses and is considered the most appropriate for sharing with other users. This collection of files comprises the raw transcribed WBPHS_AK bird-observation data. There is one file for each year and observer: WBPHS_YYYY_RawObs_OOO.csv, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer...

Building upon the successful efforts of SARP, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), and other federal, state, and local partners to establish and implement NFCAs in the Llano River watershed, TX and Chipola River watershed, FL (Birdsong et al., 2015, Garrett et al. 2015), we will coordinate a series of watershed-based conservation planning workshops focused on eight priority river systems in the Great Plains (i.e., the White River, Platte River, Arkansas-Kansas Rivers, Canadian River, Deep Fork River, Red River, Brazos River, and Colorado River). We will utilize conservation assessments and conservation planning tools recently developed by Labay and Henderickson (2014; http://repositories.lib.utexas.edu/handle/2152/27744)...

Grassland ecosystems established under the conservation reserve program (CRP) in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) currently provide soil conservation and wildlife habitat services. We aimed to determine if these lands also sequester soil organic carbon (SOC), as compared with neighboring croplands across multiple farms in the North Dakota PPR. We sampled soil from small plots at 17 private farms in the central North Dakota PPR, where long-term (C15 years) grasslands managed under the CRP were paired with neighboring annual croplands. Cores were collected to 100 cm and split into 0–10, 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, 40–70, and 70–100 cm soil depth layers. We hypothesized the effect of land use on soil organic carbon (SOC),...

Webinar for by Meade Krosby, UW, July 24, 2014Protecting and restoring ecological connectivity is a leading climate adaptation strategy forbiodiversity conservation (Heller & Zavaleta 2009, Lawler 2009), because species are expectedto have difficulty tracking shifting climates across fragmented landscapes (Thomas et al. 2004).Connectivity conservation is thus a primary focus of numerous large-scale climate adaptationinitiatives (e.g., U.S. Department of Interior’s Landscape Conservation Cooperatives), and a corestrategy of many federal climate adaptation plans (NPS 2010, USFS 2011, USFWS 2010). Thishas led to a growing need for approaches that identify priority areas for connectivityconservation in a changing climate.Riparian...
