These data are meant to support a publication "Disentangling direct and indirect effects of extreme events on coastal wetland communities" in the Journal of Animal Ecology. This dataset contains both amphibian and fish observations based on our use of plastic minnow traps. Additionally we present (specific) conductance values observed during our trapping periods.
These data indicate whether a premetamorphic or any life stage of each amphibian species (sierran treefrog Pseudacris sierra, California red-legged frog Rana draytonii, and rough-skinned newt Taricha granulosa) was detected in a survey. These data, combined with the survey data, are necessary for modeling occupancy while accounting for imperfect detection. Surveys for which no detections occurred do not appear in this file, but are in the survey data file (Survey_Data_for_Occupancy_of_Amphibians_in_Northern_California_Coastal_Dune_Drainages_2014_2016).
These data describe the maximum water depth in each studied coastal dune drainage in each study year. Water depth is used as a proxy for hydroperiod, and is a good indicator of the relative persistence of surface water among sites that can be collected in a single visit.

Maps of amphibian diversity include the total species richness, major taxonomic Orders (Anura, Caudata,Gymnophiona), threatened species, and small-ranged species. Species considered small-ranged are those with a geographic range size smaller than the global median (i.e., the 50% of species with the smallest ranges). Maps are based on data from the IUCN, July 2013 update.For amphibians, all of the maps have been generated at a spatial resolution of 10x10km. Maps represent native, extant species only. Amphibians living in agricultural areas encounter many challenges. Two factors affecting individuals in these landscapes are habitat loss and pesticides. This thesis focuses on amphibians using agricultural wetlands in Iowa, where row crops such as corn and soybeans dominate the landscape. The goal of my first study was to determine the influences of site characteristics on amphibian presence and success. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species contains assessments for just over 76,000 species, of which about two-thirds have spatial data. This spatial data provided below is for comprehensively assessed taxonomic groups. It is important to note that some species such as those listed as Data Deficient are not mapped and subspecies are mapped within the parental species. The data is available as ESRI shapefiles format and contains the known range of each species. Ranges are depicted as polygons, except for the freshwater HydroSHED tables. These data describe the date, time (night vs. day), observer, and air temperature of each amphibian occupancy survey conducted in coastal dune drainages from 2014 through 2016. Survey-specific covariates explain patterns in detection probabilities among surveys, thereby reducing bias in occupancy models and improving future surveys.

Occupancy models provide a reliable method of estimating species distributions while accounting for imperfect detectability. The cost of accounting for false absences is that detection and nondetection surveys typically require repeated visits to a site or multiple-observer techniques. More efficient methods of collecting data to estimate detection probabilities would allow additional sites to be surveyed for the same amount of effort, which would support more precise estimation of covariate effects to improve inference about underlying ecological processes.
