FY2017There is an increasing concern and need for the conservation of springsnails and other endemic mollusks and for conservation of the unique spring and springbrook habitats on which they depend (Hershler et al 2014; Abele 2011). Nationwide, several of these species have been listed as endangered or threatened under provisions of the ESA; others are candidates for federal listing or are undergoing review by USFWS for possible future listing actions. The Fish and Wildlife Observation feature class represents observations of aquatic and terrestrial animals made by sight, sound, and other detection methods. It includes locations where animals were found. It does not include surveyed places where the animal was looked for and not found. Data originated primarily from the NRIS Wildlife and Aquatic Surveys applications. The feature class includes the observation location on land or water and the attributes defined in this document. Please note that all listed status fields are dependent on FS units having entered status information into the NRIS TAXA application. A null value does not necessarily indicate an unlisted status.

The goal of delineating Conservation Opportunity Areas (COAs) was to use relevant variables to map areas in South Dakota where increased emphasis on habitat conservation, protection, or management will benefit rare species and remaining intact native habitats. Identified areas may include lands owned or managed by federal, state, tribal, or private entities and areas that may already be managed to maximize species and habitat diversity. This project will to improve the irrigated meadows on the Cokeville Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Engineering and design will be provided to improve the condition of unused irrigation systems and pumps and to install additional head gates and dikes. Rehabilitation of about 7 miles of dike for the B-Q Canal; creating a grass bank at Cokeville Meadows NWR; planting and weed control will restore 1,300 acres of irrigated hay meadows on the Refuge that are currently unproductive; monitoring elk movement east of NWR. To reconnect 50 miles of contiguous stream habitat for BLM sensitive fishes including the Colorado River cutthroat troat, bluehead sucker, flannelmouth sucker, and roundtail chub. This is an ongoing cooperative project to restore 6,100 ft of Savery creek. This joint project will improve native Colorado Cutthroat fish habitat, improve thermal and low flow habitat, and reduce bank erosion by approximately 1,000 cubic yards per year. Restoration will include narrowing the channel to accommodate for 220 cfs flows; excavating pools and installing fish-hook vane structures to improve low flow trout habitat; and re-establishing riparian vegetation to prevent further erosion. Aquatic connectivity was modeled across the entire Landscape Conservation Cooperative geography at the catchmentand watershed scales. To evaluate aquatic connectivity, the density of dams and road crossings was used as these areknown to disrupt connectivity within aquatic systems. Connectivity data for dams and road crossings werecreated from the StreamCat database. The density of dams and roads was multiplied, at the catchment and watershedlevels, by the relative influence of each connectivity variable in the Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) models and then the connectivity variables were averaged. In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project of the National Water-Quality Program. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project is to determine how water-quality and ecological conditions change over time.
