This story map is a part of the General Land Office (GLO) Record of the Week (ROTW) project. Each week, the BLM ES will release a story map as a part of the GLO ROTW Project. This project was initiated by BLM Eastern States to share unique records from the GLO Records collection. This story map is about the early history of Jackson, Mississippi.

This dataset was created to support the BLM's San Luis Valley-Taos Plateau Landscape Assessment by clipping the data to the ecoregion boundary. This data set contains available boundaries and associated attributes for Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in the United States, identified as of May 2013. The IBA boundaries should not be perceived as absolute, definite boundaries. Rather, the boundaries should be considered approximates of the critical habitat areas. Comprehensive site specific surveys have not been conducted for each IBA, therefore, the data provided in this release cannot be relied on as a definitive statement of the presence or absence of all species at a given location. These data should not be considered...

Willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) occupy the boreal and arctic northern hemisphere, and are one of the few bird species that remain in the Arctic year-round. In Alaska and northern Canada, willow ptarmigan are common in areas with patches of dense vegetation, especially where willow (Salix) or birch (Betula) shrubs are abundant. They are also found in sedge-willow (Carex-Salix) marshes, in meadows, along road and forest edges, and on open tundra. Unlike Rock Ptarmigan (L. muta), the species avoids dry, rocky areas. After chicks hatch, birds move to wetter areas, such as marshes and along streams. Willow ptarmigan were selected as a Terrestrial Fine-Filter CE for this assessment because they are an important prey...

This story map highlights significant landscape and recreational opportunities within the San Juan Islands National Monument. This virtual experience informs potential visitors about the Monument and gives them an idea of what to expect and how to be prepared for their dynamic SJINM experience. Meaning, folks can plan ahead and prepare for trip by incorporating a “Leave No Trace” attitude and minimize their impact while visiting the islands. This story map also contains information such as campsites, facilities, outhouses, information kiosks, signs, parking, and cultural information. All of this information helps to tell the story of the landscape and adds to the sightseers experience when visiting the Islands....

The Vista tool is used to create a Scenario of the water use CAs affecting the North American Warm Desert Riparian Woodland, Shrubland, Mesquite Bosque and Stream CE and applies user-input Landscape Condition Model (LCM) scores to generate ESAs for the CE. The LCM consists of Site Impact scores and impact Distances for each CA category. Site Impact scores are a value between 0 and 1 representing the impact of the CA on the relevant CEs. A score close to 1 indicates negligible or no impact from that CA. A score close to 0 indicates the highest possible impact, e.g. an interstate highway that makes the area in which it occurs completely unsuitable for the CE. Distances are set in meters and extend the impact of the...

Current West Nile Virus risk (0 to 100), with highest risk being 100 across WYB study area. Data was attained from Ryan Harrigan (iluvsa@ucla.edu) at the Center for Tropical Research, Institute of the Environment, University of California, Los Angeles. work is being currently submitted to Global Change Biology.

Trends measure the magnitude and statistical significance within the recent 32-year timeslice (1981-2012) using a combination of two tests. Theil-Sen slope was used to calculate magnitude of change within the recent timeframe; a Theil-Sen linear regression line is fit to the 32-year time series. The change in the value of this line across the 32-year period indicates magnitude of climate change. The Mann-Kendall test was used to calculate p-values to measure the statistical significance of the magnitude of the 32-year trend. Change was only deemed statistically significant in places where the Mann-Kendall p-value was less than 0.05.

This dataset shows a series of fragmentation metrics for natural vegetation for a 4KM reporting unit. These metrics were calculated using FRAGSTATS. For more information about FRAGSTATS, or the methods used to calculate these metrics, please see: http://www.umass.edu/landeco/research/fragstats/fragstats.html Fragmentation metrics were caculated for a 3x3 reporting unit grid (4KM each) neighborhood centered on each reporting unit grid cell. This was done to prevent edge effects due to the smaller size of the reporting units relative to the size of larger patches in more intact landscapes. A 90 meter edge distance was used to define core area within patches.

This dataset was developed for the BLM Rapid Ecoregional Assessment for the Central Yukon study area and represents the most recent available annual distribution for the Terrestrial Fine-Filter Conservation Element caribou: Porcupine Herd. The Porcupine Caribou Management Board maintain radio collar and satellite telemetry data for the Porcupine Herd across Alaska, Yukon, and Northwest Territories. Radio collar and satellite telemetry data were not made available to Alaska Center for Conservation Science (ACCS) for the Rapid Ecoregional Assessment (REA). However, collar location data points were used by Griffith et al. (2002) to determine the 1983 to 2001 total annual range for the Porcupine Herd. The total annual...
