A Monitoring Protocol to Assess Wintering Shorebird Population Trends

Phase 1 & 2 (2010, 2012): This project developed a sampling design and monitoring protocol for wintering shorebirds in the Central Valley and in the San Francisco Bay Estuary and develop an LCC-specific online shorebird monitoring portal publicly available at the California Avian Data Center. GAP distribution models represent the areas where species are predicted to occur based on habitat associations. GAP distribution models are the spatial arrangement of environments suitable for occupation by a species. In other words, a species distribution is created using a deductive model to predict areas suitable for occupation within a species range. To represent these suitable environments, GAP compiled existing GAP data, where available, and compiled additional data where needed. Based on forest patch area, location, and hydrologic influence, we ranked the purported need of forest patches for additional conservation-protection. Qualities for higher ranking included forest patches with & greater than 2000 ha of core-forest that was more than 250 m from an edge, forest patches within high priority areas for reforestation, and forest patches with less propensity for flooding. Arctic LCC Facilitation for Current and Future Resource Management and Science Needs

The ALCC has asked the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution (U.S. Institute) to assist them in engaging a third-party neutral facilitator who can work with the steering committee to identify key landscape scale resource management needs common to many of the ALCC partners. The overall goals of this project are twofold. One is to identify key future landscape scale resource management and science needs that are common to many of the ALCC partners, and in doing so, increase understanding of future landscape scale information needs among the ALCC steering committee members.
