This dataset includes per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and pharmaceuticals monitored at 62 sampling sites in tributaries of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Chemicals were evaluated in a sediment sample (PFAS only) and water concentrations were estimated using polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS). Sediment samples were collected from the 62 sites in June and July 2018, which were analyzed for 23 PFAS compounds using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Duplicate sediment samples were collected at 23 sites. Overall, 22 of the 23 sediment PFAS compounds analyzed were detected in samples from at least one site. Pharmaceuticals and PFAS samples were collected instream by deploying...

These data were collected to characterize the quantity and quality of microplastic particles found in 17 streams in the northeastern United States, from New York to Virginia. USGS staff who represent the Urban Landscapes Capabilities Team (ULCT) within the North Atlantic-Appalachian Region designed the study and collected the water samples on which the data are based. Data were collected during 2017 and 2018 and included a baseflow and stormflow sample at each site. Additionally, the various microplastic particles in each sample were characterized by one of two different size-fraction categories (categories of 355-1000 micrometers and 1000-5600 micrometers), by type of particle (fiber/line, fiber clump, bead/pellet,...

Data from 10-day sediment toxicity tests of bed sediments from the Niagara River area of concern and tributaries, Niagara and Erie County, New York. Specifically, the data was used to compare the survival and growth of two macroinvertebrate species in sediments from study sites and laboratory controls. Results are from 10-day sediment exposures of two test species, Chironomus dilutus and Hyalella azteca. Bed-sediments were collected from depositional areas using either a petite Ponar (0.03 square meter) dredge or a stainless steel sediment scoop. At each site, approximately five grabs or scoops were composited into a bucket, mixed, and a 4-liter (L) subsample was stored in a polyethylene container. Sediment toxicity...

Heavy and light mineral separates were extracted from the 36 collected field samples following a USGS procedure (Strong and Driscoll, 2016) and analyzed using the handheld portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyzer as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI), in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). These pXRF results are part of a data release including grain size distribution, photographic and associated chemical and mineral analysis data for 36...

Coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) and severe storms such as hurricanes. These events enhance the dispersion and concentration of natural and anthropogenic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms that could adversely affect the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in coming years. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed the Sediment-Bound Contaminant Resiliency and Response (SCoRR) strategy to define baseline and post-event sediment-bound environmental health (EH) stressors. These data document the location, sampling techniques and field conditions observed while collecting soil and sediment samples from selected stations in the northeastern US during the...

These data contain concentrations of tetrachloroethylene in groundwater samples collected from 2011 to 2016 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Samples were collected using direct-push technology. These data include all groundwater samples collected in the study area regardless of collection date. Only data collected during 1 of the 10 sampling periods in the journal article were used in interpreations in the article. In order to protect personally identifiable information (PII), all data collected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency do not contain spatial information. Please contact the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for permission and access to spatial information for these samples....
This data set is a compilation of data from two sampling efforts (2010 and 2014), focused on determining the presence and distribution of organic contaminants throughout the United States portion of the Great Lakes watershed. Water-borne contaminants were monitored in 69 tributaries of the Great Lakes using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs), and polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS). Analyses included 185 chemicals (143 detected) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), legacy and current-use pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and organophosphate fire retardants, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, industrial chemicals, surfactants, and others.

This dataset represents 179 unique adult female northern elephant seals that were sampled between 2011 and 2021 during four different life history states (early breeding, late breeding, early molting, and late molting) at the Ano Nuevo colony in California, USA. Some individual seals were sampled multiple times, resulting in a total of 313 tissue samples. Tissue samples were collected from seals and quantified for total mercury (whole blood and muscle), cortisol (serum), and 10 blood biomarkers (total thyroxine, total triiodothyronine, reverse triiodothyronine, immunoglobulin E, immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin M, interleukin-6, interleukin-1-beta, progesterone, and estradiol). These data support the following...

The data contain yearly modeled estimates of Pacific salmon escapement (in annual metric tons of wet mass) from 1976 to 2015 across four regions of western North America. A second data file contains modeled estimates of contaminant or nutrient concentrations in Pacific Salmon. The modeled estimates were derived from Bayesian generalized linear models (contaminant or nutrient concentrations) or from Bayesian generalized additive models (Salmon Escapement).

Grain size analysis using an Advantech Sonic Sifter Separator was conducted as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). Following field collection the samples were sieved into the greater than and less than 2 millimeter size fractions. The less than 2 millimeter fraction was sifted into seven grain size ranges. Each size fraction was weighed to 0.1 grams and photo documented. The cooperator for this study is...

Contamination to aquatic resources from co-produced water (brine) associated with energy development has been documented in the northeastern portion of the Williston Basin; an area mantled by glacial drift. The presence and magnitude of brine contamination can be determined using the contamination index (CI) value from water samples. Recently, the U.S. Geological Survey published a section (~2.59 km2) level risk assessment of brine contamination to aquatic resources for Sheridan County, Montana, using oilfield and hydrogeological parameters. Our goal was to improve the Sheridan County assessment (SCA) and evaluate the use of this new Williston Basin assessment (WBA) across 31 counties mantled by glacial drift in...
