Arsenic concentrations from 20,450 domestic wells in the U.S. were used to develop a logistic regression model of the probability of having arsenic > 10 µg/L (“high arsenic”), which is presented at the county, state, and national scales. Variables representing geologic sources, geochemical, hydrologic, and physical features were among the significant predictors of high arsenic. For U.S. Census blocks, the mean probability of arsenic > 10 µg/L was multiplied by the population using domestic wells to estimate the potential high-arsenic domestic-well population. Approximately 44.1 M people in the U.S. use water from domestic wells. The population in the conterminous U.S. using water from domestic wells with predicted...

This coverage contains estimates of nitrogen-fertilizer sales for the conterminous United States in 1989 as reported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1990) and by Jerald Fletcher (West Virginia University, written commun., 1992). Nitrogen-fertilizer sales estimates in this coverage are reported for each county polygon in tons of actual nutrient sold (inorganic nitrogen, phosphate, and potash) as distinct from total tons...

This coverage contains estimates of herbicide use for the eighty-first through the ninety-sixth most-used herbicides in the conterminous United States as reported in Gianessi and Puffer (1991). Herbicide-use estimates in this coverage are reported for each county polygon as acres treated, pounds of active ingredient used, and pounds used per square mile. The herbicide-use estimates provided by Gianessi and Puffer (1991) list acres...

This data set represents the estimated percentage of the 1-km grid cell that is covered by or subject to the agricultural conservation practice (CP330), Contour Farming (CF) on agricultural land by county. Contour Farming is described as "tillage, planting, and other farming operations performed on or near the contour of the field slope." (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1995) This data set was created with geographic information...

A point coverage was created from the 1980 Master Area Reference File (MARF) of the U.S. Census Bureay. Each point represents the center of a census tract, though some tracts were split. A 1980 population is associated with each point. Populations for 1970, 1982, 1984, and 1985 were inferred from county population data.

This data set represents soil surface slope, in percent times 1000, in the conterminous United States. The data set was used as an input data layer for a national model to predict nitrate concentration in shallow ground water. Nolan and Hitt (2006) developed two national models to predict contamination of ground water by nonpoint sources of nitrate. The nonlinear approach to national-scale Ground-WAter Vulnerability Assessment (GWAVA)...

A raster dataset representing multi-year mean (1998-2018) capacity factors (CF) for a solar photovoltaic system based on current technology, for the Conterminous United States. These data are calculated using ½ hourly irradiance values from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) Sengupta et al. (2018), and the Systems Advisor Model (Blair et al. 2014). Cell values represent the estimated capacity factor (a ratio of net generation to the maximum generation) for photovoltaic energy production for a 1-axis tracking system (technology details found in Maclaurin et al. 2019). The continuous raster were put into 8 quantile bins for interpretation and reporting. For more information and further data, please visit...
A raster dataset representing the soil organic carbon content of surface soil horizons (top 15 cm or ~6 inches) in the conterminous United States. Soil organic carbon is a readily component of soil organic matter, which plays an important role the functioning of soils, including formation of soil structure, soil nutrient content, soil moisture retention, and carbon sequestration. Soil carbon content here is measured as percent by mass. This dataset was created using the soil percent organic carbon 100 m spatial resolution predictive rasters for 0, 5, and 15 cm depths developed by Ramcharan et al. (2018). The average soil organic carbon over the top 15 cm was calculated using the trapezoidal rule, and then put into...
This metadata record describes monthly input and output data covering the period 1900-2015 for a water-balance model described in McCabe and Wolock (2011). The input datasets are precipitation (PPT) and air temperature (TAV) from the PRISM group at Oregon State University. The model outputs include estimated potential evapotranspiration (PET), actual evapotranspiration (AET), runoff (RUN) (streamflow per unit area), soil moisture storage (STO), and snowfall (SNO). The datasets are arranged in tables of monthly total or average values measured in millimeters or degrees C and then multiplied by 100. The data are indexed by the identifier PRISMID, which refers to an ASCII raster of cells in an associated file named...
Crop cover maps have become widely used in a range of research applications. Multiple crop cover maps have been developed to suite particular research interests. The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Cropland Data Layers (CDL) are a series of commonly used crop cover maps for the conterminous United States (CONUS) that span from 2008-2013. In this investigation we wanted to expand the temporal coverage of the NASS CDL archive back to 2000 by creating yearly NASS CDL-like crop cover maps derived from a classification tree model algorithm. We used over 11 million crop sample records to train a classification tree algorithm and to develop a crop classification model (CCM). The model was used to create...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has generated land surface form classes for the contiguous United States. These land surface form classes were created as part of an effort to map standardized, terrestrial ecosystems for the nation using a classification developed by NatureServe (Comer and others, 2003). Ecosystem distributions were modeled using a biophysical stratification approach developed for South America (Sayre and others, 2008) and now being implemented globally (Sayre and others, 2007). Land surface forms strongly influence the differentiation and distribution of terrestrial ecosystems, and are one of the key input layers in the ecosystem delineation process. The methodology used to produce these land surface...
Knowledge of where energy resources occur and where there is existing development or new development potential, in conjunction with model-predicted golden eagle relative nest site density (Dunk et al. 2019), can be used to identify areas with higher or lower potential resource conflict. Depicted on the map is a 16-class raster that displays the spatial overlap of wind resources (4 classes, low to high) and golden eagle relative nest site density (4 classes, lower to higher). This raster displays the intersection of multi-year mean capacity factors (MCF) for wind turbines and the golden eagle relative nest site density within ecoregion raster. We have divided each probability into equal intervals, and then intersected...
The U.S. Geological Survey is developing national water-use models to support water resources management in the United States. Model benefits include a nationally consistent estimation approach, greater temporal and spatial resolution of estimates, efficient and automated updates of results, and capabilities to forecast water use into the future and assess model uncertainty. This data release contains data used in a machine learning model to estimate monthly water use for communities that are supplied by public-supply water systems in the conterminous United States for 2000-2020. This data release also contains associated scripts used to produce input features as well as model output values by 12-digit hydrologic...
