These Bathymetric Digital Elevation Models (DEM) were generated from original point soundings collected during hydrographic surveys conducted by the National Ocean Service and its predecessors. Mean High Water shoreline as defined by NOAA nautical charts was used as a constraining boundary and assigned its local elevation relative to the local datum (typically Mean Low Water). DEM grid values outside the shoreline (on land) were assigned null values (-32676). In the event of multiple surveys in a region, the most recent survey soundings were retained. Both 7.5 minute and 1 degree DEMs are available. The 1 degree DEMs were generated from the higher resolution 7.5 minute DEMs which covered the estuary.

Field spectra were collected from the Deschutes River near Bend, OR, July 26-28, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. Reflectance measurements were made from a raft in the reach of the Deschutes River between Benham Falls and Dillon Falls using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in reflectance mode. The depth at each spectral measurement location was interpolated from field measurements of depth obtained with an echo sounder. This data release provides both the reflectance spectra and the interpolated depths and can be used to develop relationships between depth and reflectance for mapping river bathymetry from field spectra or passive optical remotely...

In addition, the WorldView3 images were geo-referenced and warped to improve alignment with field measurements. This data release includes a comma-delimited (*.csv) text file with a listing of the satellite images with columns: River, Reach, AcquisitionDate, Sensor, PixelSizeMeters, Projection,...

To support research on remote sensing of rivers, several types of remotely sensed data and various field measurements were acquired from a reach of the upper Sacramento River in northern California, September 11 - October 18, 2017. These data sets also facilitate efforts to characterize in-stream habitat for salmon and monitor geomorphic change along the Sacramento River. This parent data release includes links to child pages for the following data sets: 1) airborne hyperspectral image data acquired from a conventional, manned, fixed-wing aircraft; 2) hyperspectral image data acquired from an umanned aerial system (UAS); 3) multispectral image data acquired from a satellite; 4) bathymetric LiDAR acquired from...

Hyperspectral image data from the Niobrara River, a dynamic, sand-bed channel in northern Nebraska, were acquired in November 2012 and again in August 2016 to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly retrieval of water depth and tracking of mobile bedforms. These data were collected by the Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) 1500H manufactured by ITRES Research Limited. The data were acquired from fixed wing aircraft and have spatial resolutions (pixel sizes) from 0.5 - 0.6 m. The data consist of a large number of spectral bands spanning the visible and near infrared wavelengths and have been radiometrically corrected. The image pixel values represent spectral radiance units of 1 uW cm-2...

Bathymetric LiDAR data from the upper Sacramento River in northern California were acquired September 10-17, 2017, to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly mapping water depth, and to facilitate efforts to characterize salmon habitat conditions and geomorphic change along the upper Sacramento River. These data were collected using a Riefl VQ-880-Gairborne laser scanning system designed for combined hydrographic and topographic surveying. The flight was conducted by Quantum Spatial, Inc. (QSI); QSI also performed all processing of the raw LiDAR data. The data were acquired from fixed wing aircraft and were used to produce tiled point clouds in a .las format and interpolated topo-bathymetric...

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas on August 25 as a category 4 hurricane with wind gusts exceeding 150 miles per hour. As Harvey moved inland the forward motion of the storm slowed down and produced tremendous rainfall amounts to southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. Historic flooding occurred in Texas and Louisiana as a result of the widespread, heavy rainfall over an 8-day period in Louisiana in August and September 2017. Following the storm event, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) hydrographers recovered and documented 2,123 high-water marks in Texas, noting location and height of the water above land surface. Many of these high-water marks were used to create flood-inundation maps for...

Field-based real-time kinematic (RTK) GNSS surveys of water surface elevation and channel bed topography were collected along the Blue River, focusing on two cross-sections from which remotely sensed data were obtained. These data were used to assess the accuracy of river bed elevations inferred from the ASTRALiTe bathymetric lidar, acquired from an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). These data sets were collected to support research focused on developing innovative methods for non-contact measurement of river discharge based on various forms of remotely sensed data. The RTK GNSS surveys were performed using a local base station and Trimble R8 and R10 receivers while wading the channel at each cross-section. Additional...

The U.S. Geological Survey contracted with Juniper Unmanned to conduct field tests of the ASTRALiTe bathymetric lidar system on the Blue River just upstream of its confluence with the Colorado River near Kremmling, Colorado, on October 18, 2018. The objective of this project was to assess the potential to map river bathymetry (i.e., channel bed topography) using lidar data collected from an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). The ASTRALiTe lidar instrument was mounted on a DJI Matrice 600 Pro UAS owned and operated by Juniper Unmanned. As part of the study, Juniper's pilot flew the ASTRALiTe instrument across 2 river transects (cross-stream) on the Blue River. This data release includes data delivered to the USGS by...

A vertical profile of downwelling spectral irradiance at different depths within the water column was measured on the Deschutes River near Bend, OR, July 28, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. Downwelling spectral irradiance data were collected using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in irradiance mode and deployed from a customized measurement crane. The measurements were made near a boat launch downstream of Benham Falls. In addition, the depth at which each downwelling spectral irradiance measurement was made was obtained using an Onset Hobo pressure transducer mounted next to the spectroradiometer foreoptic on the crane. This data release provides...

Field measurements of water depth and percent cover of benthic algae were acquired from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas August 24-25, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae from aerial photographs and satellite images. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the channel and measuring water depth with a stadia rod. Percent of algae cover on the streambed at each sample point was estimated visually to the nearest 10% on a scale from 0.0 to 1.0. The spatial location of each measurement was obtained using a Leica Zeno GG04 RTK GPS receiver. The map projection and datum for these data are UTM Zone 15 N and WGS84, respectively. This...
