Nine BlazeVideo cameras have been set up surrounding an active ripple field and meteorological station within Grand Falls dune field, Arizona. Images are taken at a set time to record sand movement. Data presented here span from April 22, 2021 to December 7, 2021.

The USGS Southwest Repeat Photography Collection (‘Collection’), formerly named the Desert Laboratory Repeat Photography Collection, is now housed by the Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) in Flagstaff, Arizona. It contains images from the late 1800s to mid-2000s, and was assembled over decades by now retired USGS scientists Drs. Robert H. Webb and Raymond M. Turner. There are 80 camera points, or stakes, along Kanab Creek in the Collection, with images and fields notes taken between 1872 and 2010 (a 138-year span). We created a single map of surface water presence by intersecting water classes from available land cover products (National Wetland Inventory, Gap Analysis Program, National Land Cover Database, and Dynamic Surface Water Extent) across the U.S. state of Arizona. We derived classified samples for four wetland classes from the harmonized map: water, herbaceous wetlands, wooded wetlands, and non-wetland cover. In Google Earth Engine (GEE) we developed a random forest model that combined the training data with spatially explicit predictor variables of vegetation greenness indices, wetness indices, seasonal index variation, topographic variables, and hydrologic parameters. This raster dataset contains biophysical settings (band 1) and wildfire frequencies (band 2) within the Mojave Desert ecological section of California. Biophysical settings were developed by the LANDFIRE program and fires occurences were mapped by the Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) program.

The dataset delineates ecological zones within California deserts. We derived ecological zones by reclassifying LANDFIRE vegetation biophysical setting types, plus defined various non-wildland (e.g. developed urban/agriculture/roads) and non-burnable (e.g. open water/barren) areas using LANDFIRE existing vegetation types. The 43 biophysical setting types present within the study area were grouped into 13 general vegetation types, which were further grouped into 4 elevation-based ecological zones plus one riparian zone according to their constituent plant associations.

The dataset delineates ecological sections within California deserts. These deserts occupy the southeastern portion of California and include two ecoregional provinces comprised of five desert regions ("ecological sections"; Miles and Goudey 1997). The American Semi-Desert and Desert Province (warm deserts) includes the Mojave Desert, Sonoran Desert, and Colorado Desert sections in the southern 83% of the California desert. The Intermountain Semi-Desert Province (cold deserts) includes the Southeastern Great Basin and Mono sections in the northern 17% of the region.

Arid ecosystems are often vulnerable to transformation to invasive-dominated states following fire, but data on persistence of these states are sparse. The grass/fire cycle is a feedback process between invasive annual grasses and fire frequency that often leads to the formation of alternative vegetation states dominated by the invasive grasses. However, other components of fire regimes, such as burn severity, also have the potential to produce long-term vegetation transformations.
