Concerns about the influence of climate change on biota have emerged over the past decade, and responses in species populations and distribution patterns have already been documented (Parmesan 1996, Thomas and Lennon 1999). Current climates and communities will not simply migrate, but rather will re-form in novel ways over time (Fox 2007; Hunter et al. 1988; Williams and Jackson 2007). Due to the uncertainty of future climatic patterns and species responses, enduring features of the landscape (geophysical settings) are appropriate targets of assessment, planning, and conservation (Anderson and Ferree 2010, Beier and Brost 2010, Brost and Beier 2012; Hunter et al. 1988). Only recently have enduring features been...

What are current conditions for important park natural resources? What are the critical data and knowledge gaps? What are some of the factors that are influencing park resource conditions? Natural Resource Condition Assessments (NRCAs) evaluate and report on the above for a subset of important natural resources in national park units (hereafter, parks). Focal study resources and indicators are selected on a park-by-park basis, guided by use of structured resource assessment and reporting frameworks. Considerations include park resource setting and enabling legislation (what are this park's most important natural resources?) and presently available data and expertise (what can be evaluated at this time?). In addition...

These data are the final landscape permeability data as described in the report "Conserving Nature's Stage: Identifying Resilient Terrestrial Landscapes in the Pacfic Northwest."Permeability refers to the connectivity of a focal cell to its ecological neighborhood when it is viewed as a source; in other words, it asks the question: “to what extent are ecological flows outward from that cell impeded or facilitated by the surrounding landscape?” Thus, permeability starts with a focal cell and looks at the resistance to ecological flow outward in all directions through the local neighborhood. As resistance increases, flow is impeded or stopped altogether. Areas of no resistance allow the flow to proceed until a user-specified...

The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data of the nearshore region of the North Pacific show temperature ranges in degrees C using points whose locations correspond to the centroids of AVHRR Pathfinder version 5 monthly, global, 4 km data set (PFSST V50). The pathfinder rasters are available from the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC), hosted by NASA JPL. The data points in this dataset lie within a 20 km buffer from the GSHHS (Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline) coastline. The GSHHS vector data are available from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). Furthermore, each point in the SST dataset is categorized by the ecoregion in which it is located. This...

The Pacific Region National Wildlife Refuge System developed a strategic approach to identify region-wide land/habitat conservation priorities. This approach was piloted in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion and resulted in a high-level landscape-scale conservation design. Working closely with conservation partners in the region, we developed a data management and analysis model that builds from existing data sets and can be shared easily with other partners.FY20122012 Objectives: Document a case study on implementing strategic conservation design for the refuge system, which can serve as a model and be applied to other geographic areas Develop a clear picture of landscape scale priorities in the Columbia Plateau, along...

This dataset was constructed from readily available open source climate and vegetation data, like Landsat. This dataset represents the vegetation and climate conditions for a large number of points across the major deserts of the SW USA. The dataset was constructed in order to use the climate pivot point approach (Munson et al. 2013) at the landscape level. Originally this dataset was much larger but we were looking to study a pure vegetation signal and therefore developed a detailed masking procedure to remove fire, slope, human, and floodplain effects. The vegetation classification originally came from SW regap, though we have refined / regrouped the data. The vegetation classification for each point is representative...
We have defined resilience as a function of both a site’s diversity of topoclimates and the site’s ability to support species movement, or terrestrial landscape permeability. Here, we posit that topoclimates provide species localized refugia from the direct effects of a changing climate, whereas landscape permeability reflects the ability of the landscape mosaic to facilitate terrestrial species movement to and between topoclimates as they shift in response to their respective climatic envelopes.90 m topoclimate data, scaled from 0.2 – 1, were multiplied with terrestrial landscape permeability data, scaled from 0 – 1, to generate a resilience value for every 90 m cell across the project area. A full description...

NPS is transforming the way park resource information is managed and delivered to parks, partners, and the public. IRMA (Integrated Resource Management Applications) is the name given to the project that has guided this transformation, and to the web portal that is its end result. View or download the IRMA project brief (.pdf). IRMA is a portfolio of tools and applications, and the beginnings of a "one-stop" for data and information on park-related resources. From IRMA you can search for, view, and download documents, reports, publications, data sets, and park species lists. You can get information on park visitor numbers, park projects, and apply for a park research permit. Park staff can navigate to certain internal...

The LANDFIRE Data Distribution Site is the geospatial data gateway to search, browse, and download LANDFIRE data. The Data Distribution Site directs you to the LANDFIRE Viewer, where you can view the 30-meter resolution layers, metadata, and descriptions. This viewer provides assorted tools allowing the ability to interact and manipulate any data displayed within the viewer. Data extents are defined by dragging an extent or defining coordinates. All LANDFIRE data are free and available to everyone. The default download is an ESRI grid raster format with attributes and includes metadata in a zipped file. Options to specify different data formats and projections are available through the viewer's Modify Data Request...

“Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) are ecologically distinct regions in North America with similar bird communities, habitats, and resource management issues. They are based on the scale-flexible hierarchical framework of nested ecological units delineated by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC). These ecoregions encompass areas that are similar in their biotic (e.g., plant and wildlife) and abiotic (e.g., soils, drainage patterns, temperature, and annual precipitation) characteristics. BCRs may be partitioned into smaller ecological units when finer scale conservation planning, implementation, and evaluation are necessary. Conversely, BCRs may be aggregated to facilitate conservation partnerships throughout...

This multi-tiered, broad-scale, hierarchical system of ecoregions is based on numerous environmental variables at each level. The first two tiers are based on climate, followed by climate and physiograpghy, and finally topography and soils. This data was used to provide a general description of the ecosystem geography.
