This digital dataset consists of monthly climate data from the Basin Characterization Model v8 (BCMv8) for the updated Central Valley Hydrologic Model (CVHM2) for water years 1922 to 2019. The BCMv8 data are available in a separate data release titled "The Basin Characterization Model - A regional water balance software package (BCMv8) data release and model archive for hydrologic California, water years 1896-2020". The data were modified by: (1) extracting the data from the data source for the relevant model domain and times, and (2) rescaling the 270-meter BCMv8 grid to the small watersheds that contribute boundary flow to the CVHM2 model for the hydrologic variables recharge and runoff. The three data pieces...

This data set is comprised of 3 files of information collected on amphibians and vernal pool habitats at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge from 2004 - 2016.
The distribution of the greater sage-grouse (hereafter sage-grouse; Centrocercus urophasianus) has declined to 56% of its pre-settlement distribution (Schroeder et al. 2004) and abundance of males attending leks has decreased substantially over the past 50 years throughout the species’ range (Garton et al. 2011, Garton et al. 2015, WAFWA 2015). Livestock grazing is a common land use within sage-grouse habitat, and livestock grazing has been implicated by some experts as one of numerous factors contributing to sage-grouse population declines (Beck and Mitchell 2000, Schroeder et al. 2004). However, there are also numerous mechanisms by which livestock grazing might benefit sage-grouse (Beck and Mitchell 2000, Crawford...

LANDFIRE's (LF) 2022 Canopy Base Height (CBH) supplies information used in fire behavior models to determine the critical point at which a surface fire will transition to a crown fire in conjunction with other environmental factors, such as wind speed and moisture content. CBH data are continuous from 0 to 9.9 meters (to the nearest 0.1m) and describe the lowest point in a stand where there is enough available fuel (0.25in diameter) to propagate fire vertically through the canopy. Critical CBH is defined as the lowest point at which the Canopy Bulk Density (CBD) is .012kg m-3. Under different scenarios of disturbance and based on previous research incorporating plot-level CBH calculations, CBH for disturbed areas...

This metadata record documents a set of 118 comma delimited files and a data dictionary describing the inputs for the U.S. Geological Survey Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) which is used to drive the National Hydrologic Model (NHM) for the United States-Canada transboundary domain. The National Hydrologic Model database contains parameters for hydrologic response units (HRUs) and stream segments needed to run the NHM. These parameters are generated using python scripts to process input datasets such as digital elevation models, soil maps, and land cover classifications. Many of the parameters were left at their default model value as they would need to be calibrated as part of the PRMS model development...

Water samples from the Platte River were collected and analyzed for environmental DNA (eDNA). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Nebraska Water Science Center (NEWSC) collected samples monthly from November 2019 to September 2022 at the Platte River near Ashland, Nebraska (USGS: 06801000). The USGS, in cooperation with the City of Lincoln, collected these samples. Water from the Platte River was collected as a series of weighted bottle subsamples that were taken from equal width increments across the river and composited into a sterilized 1-liter bottle. An aliquot of this composited sample was extracted using a sterile syringe and then filtered by the USGS NEWSC staff using filters provided by Jonah Ventures. These...

The publication "Invaders from Islands: Thermal Matching, Potential, or Plasticity?" is comprised of data derived from multiple datasets. These datasets include climatic and temperature variables used in ecological niche models for predicting suitable habitat for Leiocephalus carinatus in its invaded and native ranges. Also included are thermal tolerance measurements assessed in March 2020 for Leiocephalus carinatus from Key Largo and Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA. Additionally, we include weatherstation data for local minimum and maximum ambient temperatures for the experimentally assessed populations at short (months) and long (decades) timescales. The dataset "curly_thermal_limits" describes thermal tolerance data...

Climatic extremes are becoming more frequent with climate change and have the potential to cause major ecological shifts and ecosystem collapse. With the ecosystem collapse these normally healthy marshes fragment and convert to open water. Along the northern Gulf of Mexico, a coastal wetland in the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge in Texas suffered significant and acute vegetation dieback following Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Using Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) we acquired high resolution imagery to identify plant types that may correlate with elevation levels. Most plant species will fall into the succulents, graminoids, and Spartina alterniflora marsh types. These degraded marsh areas are classified into 5 categories:...

Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management, the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled via bottom trawl during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2023 data to...

LANDFIRE's (LF) 2022 update (LF 2022) Existing Vegetation Type (EVT) represents the current distribution of the terrestrial ecological systems classification developed by NatureServe for the western hemisphere. In this context, a terrestrial ecological system is defined as a group of plant community types that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients. EVT also includes ruderal or semi-natural vegetation types within the U.S. National Vegetation Classification [(NVC) https://usnvc.org/]. See the EVT product page (https://www.landfire.gov/evt.php) for more information about ecological systems and NVC classifications. EVT is mapped using decision...

This data release provides computed rainfall (rain total, duration, intensity, erosivity and antecedent rainfall) and flow (flow volume, flow-weighted mean concentrations, total loads, and total yields) metrics from monitored precipitation, discharge, and water quality (nutrients and sediment concentrations) data collected at U.S. Geological Survey edge-of-field (EOF) monitoring sites located in five Great Lakes States (Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and New York). EOF monitoring sites are installed at the edge of agricultural fields, either on the field surface or using subsurface tiles, where runoff can be intercepted and channeled through monitoring equipment before it enters the natural stream system. These...

This data release contains spatial data on the location, number, size and extent of energy-related surface disturbances on the Colorado Plateau of Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico as of 2016. The database includes: 1) polygons of oil and gas pads generated from automated and manual classification of aerial imagery, and 2) polylines of roads derived from the U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line Shapefile, supplemented with additional oil and gas access roads digitized from aerial imagery. Pad polygons and road segments are attributed with a "spud year" date based on spud information from the nearest well point. Spudding is the process of beginning to drill a well in the oil and gas industry, and the spud year is a close approximation...

Forest harvest is one of the primary landscape-scale management actions affecting riparian forests of the Pacific Northwest, U.S, yet the effect of harvest on headwater steam amphibians is largely understudied. Existing information is often limited because of the difficulty separating movement and emigration processes from occupancy and abundance estimates. We designed a before-after control-impact experiment to account for instream movement in the responses of three unique headwater stream amphibians to clearcut logging as part of the Trask River Watershed Experimental Study in the Oregon Coast Range. We captured and marked larval tailed frogs (Ascaphus truei), Coastal giant salamanders (Dicamptodon tenebrosus),...

This data release documents socioeconomic and water demand indicators for the Mekong River delta region. The Mekong River provides many valuable benefits to the 60 million Southeast Asian residents living in its Basin. Maintaining adequate supplies of water in the Mekong River Basin is vital for food security. However, the Mekong River Basin is increasingly stressed by infrastructure development, growing water demands, and land cover change, in addition to climate change. Freshwater demands and the capacity to respond to changing resource availability were estimated to assess vulnerability to changes in water availability in provinces of the Mekong River delta region along the Cambodia-Vietnam border. Water demands...
