Coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) and severe storms such as hurricanes. These events enhance the dispersion and concentration of natural and anthropogenic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms that could adversely affect the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in coming years. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed the Sediment-Bound Contaminant Resiliency and Response (SCoRR) strategy to define baseline and post-event sediment-bound environmental health (EH) stressors. These data document the location, sampling techniques and field conditions observed while collecting soil and sediment samples from selected stations in the northeastern US during the...

The T-3 (Fletcher's) Ice Island in the Arctic Ocean was the site of a scientific research station re-established by the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory starting in 1962. Starting in 1963, the USGS acquired marine heat flow data and coincident sediment cores at sites in Canada Basin, Nautilus Basin, Mendeleev Ridge, and Alpha Ridge as the ice island drifted in the Amerasian Basin. At least 584 heat flow penetrations were attempted, and data were reported at 356 of these. This dataset is the enhanced version of the original data table from Lachenbruch and others (2019; see cross-reference), incorporating additional information such as the probable dates of measurement, physiographic province and surficial geology...

The study reach is located from river miles -15 at the base of Glen Canyon Dam to 0 at Lees Ferry. Channel bathymetry was mapped using multibeam bathymetry collected in November 2014 and single beam bathymetry collected in February 2015, August 2015, February 2016, and June 2016. Subaerial topography was mapped using photogrammetry derived from aerial Imagery collected in May 2013 and ground-based total-stations collected in February 2015, October 2015, and October...
This data release has the results of 333 online survey respondents representing 17 federal agencies and 7 Executive Branch departments from March 14 through April 14, 2022 regarding The Federal Priority Streamgage (FPS) network of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The FPS network was created in 1999 as the National Streamflow Information Program and receives congressionally appropriated funding to support the operation of a federally funded “backbone” network of streamflow gages across the United States that are designated to meet the “federal needs” or priorities of the country. Anticipating the evolution of federal stakeholder water-data needs, and advances in monitoring and communication technologies, the USGS...

These data provide beryllium-7 (7Be) and excess lead-210 (210Pbxs) activity for fine-grained, mobile, streambed sediment in the Black Creek, Indiana (IN) stream-channel network. This basin is monitored in cooperation with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). During the period July 22-25, 2019 (summer low flow), the thickness and spatial extent of soft, mobile, fine-grained (mainly silt and clay) streambed sediment was inventoried and sampled along 150-meter (m) transects. A combination of stream corridor land-use distribution, valley type, channel slope, stream order (Strahler, 1957), and ecoregion (Omernik and Griffith, 2014) was used to select 30 rapid geomorphic assessment reaches using methods of Fitzpatrick...
The study area included the coasts of all five U.S. states along the northern Gulf of Mexico (i.e., Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas). We contacted federal, state, and university-affiliated scientists working with SET-MH data within this area to obtain the geographic coordinates and the installation year for each SET-MH station. Please note that while our inventory is extensive and includes most SET-MH stations in the region, our inventory is not fully exhaustive; in other words, it is possible that some stations in the region are not contained within this inventory. The SET-MH stations in our dataset include original SET, deep rod SET (RSET), and shallow RSET benchmarks.

Geophysical measurements and related field data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) site in Interior Alaska from 2018 to 2020 to characterize subsurface thermal and hydrologic conditions along a permafrost thaw gradient. The APEX site is managed by the Bonanza Creek LTER (Long Term Ecological Research). Nine instrument sites were established in April 2018 and initially comprised a buried seismic station for continuous passive recording of the seismic wavefield, and seven of the nine sites were given a borehole for repeat nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging. Between June 2018 and September 2019, measurements of active-layer thaw depth were regularly recorded...

The spatial framework for the network analysis is a set of stream segments with associated land areas that they drain and monitoring sites located on the segments. Segments are related to each other through simplified routing information where each segment has one primary downstream segment (convergent flow) or is a sink (no downstream unit). Divergent flow, where a segment has more than one downstream segment (distributaries, canals) is not permitted. The framework is based on medium resolution (1:100,000) National Hydrography Dataset segments and catchments as the spatial units for the contiguous United States (CONUS) and watersheds represented by 12-digit hydrologic unit codes as the spatial units for non-CONUS...
The USGS streamflow gaging network that was active in water year 2020 was analyzed for its coverage, resolution, and representation of geospatial variables indicating public interests. The priority areas to maintain or add gages for each variable were determined by applying standardized criteria to cumulative distributions of the variable for incremental gaged areas (IGAs) and for 12-digit hydrologic unit codes (HUC12) in the United States. Priorities are identified for two spatial scales: the United States and 4-digit hydrologic unit codes.

The goal of this study was to develop a suite of inter-related water quality monitoring approaches capable of modeling and estimating the spatial and temporal gradients of particulate and dissolved total mercury (THg) concentration, and particulate and dissolved methyl mercury (MeHg), concentration, in surface waters across the Sacramento / San Joaquin River Delta (SSJRD). This suite of monitoring approaches included: a) data collection at fixed continuous monitoring stations (CMS) outfitted with in-situ sensors, b) spatial mapping using boat-mounted flow-through sensors, and c) satellite-based remote sensing. The focus of this specific child page is to document the temporal high-resolution (15 minute) in-situ sensor...
