Using juvenile individuals of 3 species of carp (Family: Cyprinidae), we tested the potential for six amino acids to elicit an extracellular electro-olfactory response within the naris using gelatin-based electrodes. The amino acids L-alanine, L-arginine, L-aspartic acid, L-asparagine, L-glutamine, and L‑glutamic acid were tested on Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), and Silver Carp (H. molitrix) to provide a comparison among amino acids both within and among species. Each row in the data set represents exposure to a single amino acid. Each individual fish was exposed to up to four amino acids sequentially in a random order, representing a trial; each individual was...

These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program and contain diet data from Black-legged Kittiwakes (BLKI), Rhinoceros Auklets (RHAU), and Tufted puffins (TUPU) located on Middleton Island in Prince William Sound, Gulf of Alaska. The first table consists of information on seabird diet samples including the sampling method and number of prey types identified per sample ("seabirdDiets_foodSample_middletonIsland.csv"). The second table is similar to the first table, however, the samples have been subdivided by individual prey species ("seabirdDiets_samplePrey_middletonIsland.csv"). The third table consists of information specific to sampled prey items, such as prey taxa identification...

A piscicide delivery method was designed to selectively target black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus, an invasive species in North America which possesses specially adapted pharyngeal teeth for crushing mollusk prey. Bait was prepared by attaching a glass vial containing toxicant (antimycin A) to the exterior of Corbicula fluminea clam valve. The vial was designed to break by the force exerted from the fish’s (550 millimeter total length) pharyngeal teeth when the fish attempted to crush and consume the clam. Suitable vial size was tested for encapsulating piscicide and two attachment materials, aquarium epoxy and ultraviolet light (UV) cured attachment material. Toxic baits consisting of antimycin A piscicide were...

Climate change is expected to alter the distributions and community composition of stream fishes in the Great Lakes region in the 21st century, in part as a result of altered hydrological systems (stream temperature, streamflow, and habitat). Resource managers need information and tools to understand where fish species and stream habitats are expected to change under future conditions. Fish sample collections and environmental variables from multiple sources across the United States Great Lakes Basin were integrated and used to develop empirical models to predict fish species occurrence under present-day climate conditions. Random Forests models were used to predict the probability of occurrence of 13 lotic fish...

Capacity to prioritize barrier removals in the Great Lakes basin is currently limited by lack of data on the passability of road crossings and dams for both unwanted invasive species and desirable native migratory fishes. Building upon our initial barrier inventory, this project has two key elements. First, we are testing whether our landscape statistical models accurately predict the upstream limits of fish migrations along the Wisconsin coast of Lake Michigan. This involves intensive field work to determine the actual upstream limits of suckers, pike, and steelhead during the spring migration. Second, we are collecting systematic data on the size and condition of dams throughout the Lake Michigan basin. These...

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment utilized expert opinion that was gathered through the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value (SIVVA) tool, which is an Excel-based vulnerability and prioritization tool that enables assessors to provide input in a relatively short time and allows for relatively seamless compilation of results. The vulnerability of each ecosystem and associated species was conducted by subregion, excluding those subregions where the species did not occur in significant numbers. Assessors were asked to evaluate species based on the habitats they use in a particular subregion. Because vulnerability can vary with life-stage for many species, assessors were asked to consider the most vulnerable...

Primary and secondary consumers are important links in the trophic transfer of methylmercury, and their methylmercury concentrations are often measured to assess the potential risk of toxicity to higher trophic level consumers, including humans. A better understanding of the link between methylmercury production in sediments and methylmercury bioaccumulation in tidal marsh primary and secondary consumers will improve the design of contaminant monitoring, remediation, and restoration efforts, thereby protecting human and wildlife health. To advance this goal, we characterized spatial variation in sediment biogeochemistry and methylmercury concentrations of sediments, water, and consumer tissues at a meso-scale among...

Mapping of barriers and statistical prediction of their passability is now fairly complete in the Great Lakes basin, yet field assessments of barrier characteristics and passability to migratory fishes are spotty. We will use the Lake Michigan basin as a pilot area for comprehensive field assessment of dam condition, dimensions, and passage technologies. These characteristics will be incorporated into our barrier database, enabling improved estimates of removal costs, watershed cumulative passability, and infrastructure maintenance challenges. In parallel, we will conduct field assessments of passability to spring migrations of Great Lakes fishes in 15 Wisconsin watersheds. Recording the upstream limits of migrations...
