We propose to support the revision and implementation of the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative’s Conservation Blueprint by integrating its Ecosystem Indicators into a structured decision support system that makes explicit how the Indicators are interrelated and how these will respond to management and policy interventions aimed at improving the conservation status of the South Atlantic region. Our specific objectives are to (1) develop ecological production functions that predict theecological impacts of selected conservation actions relative to current conditions, and to propagate these impacts through other affected systems or functions; (2) codify protocols for updating and curating geospatial...

This R code (Nest_Cards_QC.R) is used to process the raw legacy nest card data (1985 - 2019) and produce the quality controlled legacy nest card data for analysis and sharing. This code does not quality control the double searched plots (R2 plots in 1995-99), which is done in the file ‘PrepData.R’. Basic operations include transforming missing value to a common code, transforming other variable to match the data dictionary for nest cards, and resolving non-unique observer initials. The code requires the raw data (“1985-2019_Nest Cards_10-24-19_cleaned.xlsx”) and the table of observer names (“Observer Names_1985-2019_10-24-19.xlsx”). The code writes the QC nest card file “Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”. Mostly obseration...

This USGS data release is intended to provide a baselayer of information on likely stream crossings throughout the United States. The geopackage provides likely crossings of infrastructure and streams and provides observed information that helps validate modeled crossings and build knowledge about associated conditions through time (e.g. crossing type, crossing condition). Stream crossings were developed by intersecting the 2020 United States Census Bureau Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) U.S. road lines with the National Hydrography Dataset High Resolution flowlines. The current version of this data release specifically focuses on road stream crossings (i.e. TIGER2020 Roads)...

Native Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii spp. populations in the western U.S. have declined in part due to displacement by nonnative trout, but mechanisms to explain displacement vary by species and geography. Using a production framework, we demonstrated allopatric populations of Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout O. c. virginalis (RGCT) exhibited consistently higher biomass and secondary production rates (0.19–0.92 g DM·m-2·yr-1) than sympatric populations with Brown Trout Salmo trutta (0.01–0.05 g DM·m-2·yr-1) and that an interactive temperature effect on RGCT biomass and production was overshadowed by the presence of Brown Trout across cold and warm streams. Interestingly, over half of trout production was fueled...

The Southeast Aquatic Resource Partnership will direct development of science-based instream flow information for water resource managers and policy makers of the SALCC. The outcome of this project will help inform water resource managers and policy makers about flow requirements of streams, rivers, and estuaries of the SALCC region. It will also identify critical information gaps that must be filled to reduce the uncertainty of streamflow requirements for aquatic ecosystems used by state and federal agencies to protect water resources. Further, the results of this project will include assessments of the likely impacts of climate change to the region’s aquatic resources.

Annual assessment of nesting populations of geese on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) provides information for biologists, participants in cooperative goose management plans, and Pacific Flyway technical committees. A ground-based sampling procedure has been used since 1986 to estimate the number of total nests, active nests, and eggs for cackling geese, emperor geese, greater white-fronted geese, and spectacled eiders. Annual information on the size of the nesting population and potential number of young produced contributes long term data needed to understand goose and eider population ecology and better manage these species. The survey has been the primary method of measuring recovery status for the western population...

R code that takes in the nest capture history data (chdata.csv), reformats it for model fitting in Program Mark via the R package RMark. A series of models of increasing complexity are fit and compared using AIC. Output is written to text files for each model but is generally not used or saved. Code can be run to generate model results and R workspaces/ object to inspect parameter estimates. The primary purpose of this code is to explore model structures for predicting detection and as an attempt to reproduce historically used parameter estimates in past nest plot reports (e.g., Fischer et al. 2017 and earlier). Results from ‘Model 7’ are most similar to detection estimates used in the past.

These are the observer names, observer initials, year, and unique observer number for all observe that collected data on the YKD nest plot project from 1985 to 2019. This data is used with the nest card data to in various ways, but primarily to calculate cumulative observer experience for nest detection rates. This file is also used for quality control and reconciling non-unique observer initials across years.

This R code (YKDsalinity_QC.R) is used to process the raw legacy salinity data for fixed and random plots (2006 - 2019) and produce the quality controlled legacy salinity data for analysis and sharing (YKDsalinity_QC.csv). Basic operations include transforming missing value to a common code, transforming other variables to match the data dictionary, and cleaning spatial location issues. Of special note is that this QC process discover significant error in location data due to a variety of reasons so the random plot centers are added to the data table and should be used for analysis. The code requires the raw data (“Official_YKD.SALINITY.DATA.MASTER.2020.csv”), a definition of the nest plot study area (“NestPlotStudyAreaBoundary.geojson”),...

This is the YKD egg observation data reformatted from the nest card data (‘Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv’). The file eggs.R is used to produce this data set, and then this is further summarized into yearly stats on mean initiation and hatch dates to produce the file yearstats.csv.

From 1995 to 1999, a subset of nest plots were searched twice by field crews to estimate nest detection probability by mark-recapture methods. Over the five years, 30 plots were searched twice and over 2700 unique nests were found. From these data, nest detection probability is estimated using a Huggins-type mark recapture model where individual-level covariate effects of nest and observer attributes were estimated. These estimates are then used to predict nest detection rates in other years based on covariates of nests and observers. Nest detection rates are then applied to annual plot search to estimate nest populations for each species in the sampled area.

The Yellowknife Study Area (YSA),Northwest Territories, Canada, was established in 1961 by H. W. Murdy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, for the study of wetland and waterfowl ecology. The study area is located on the western edge of the Precambrian Shield and edge of the taiga and is recognized for its high wetland densities and waterfowl abundance. The region is underlain by discontinuous, warm permafrost and hence vulnerable to a warming climate. The completion of Highway 3 in early 1960s provided the first access to the region for development, research, and monitoring. The YSA is a 38-square km area centered on Highway 3, extending 48 km in length. In the 1960s, it encompassed 262 natural ponds and 313 man-made...

Alterations to stream hydrology, which include changes in stream geomorphology, are primary impacts of anthropogenic disruption. In North Carolina, hydrological alterations lead to environmental impacts through degraded ecosystems and water quality. In collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Mitigation Services (DMS), the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center datasets are proxy measurements of the extent of altered hydrology in riverine systems across the State of North Carolina. The datasets consist of an inventory and characterization of small scale (mostly agricultural) ponds and artificial drainages, which are both significant hydrologic modifications in the...

The USGS Southeast Ecological Science Center (SESC) Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (NAS) database provides records of sightings and capture data of non-native (introduced) aquatic species over the entire the United States (Benson 1999). For areas within the SALCC region, the NAS currently contains records dating back to 1885 for over 200 nonindigenous plant and animal species. This project seeks to utilize these data along with new GIS-based data on current and future (e.g. SLEUTH) landscape and climate parameters to develop models of invasive species introductions and dispersal across the SALCC region. Both multi- and single species models will be considered in these analyses. We will then utilize a formal decision-analytic...

This project seeks to develop a tool that strategically identifies priority areas for land protection. This is a pilot study to assess the extent of taxa that contain adequate genetic sampling within the south Atlantic ecoregion for characterization of intraspecific genetic variation. We seek to use genetic data from multiple taxa coupled with GIS data to provide a genetic landscape from which geographic patterns of intraspecific genetic diversity will be inferred. Joint analyses of the resulting genetic landscapes will be used to identify geographic areas where multiple species show atypical patterns of interpopulation divergence or intrapopulation diversity (i.e., a hotspot of high biological value). We will then...

The South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint is a living spatial plan to conserve natural and cultural resources for future generations. It identifies shared conservation priorities across the South Atlantic region. The first Blueprint, Version 1.0, was released in March 2014. Blueprint 1.0 was based on a combination of expert input and partner plans and used a spatial scale of HUC-12 subwatersheds in the terrestrial environment and outer continental shelf lease blocks in the marine environment. More than 300 people from 85 organizations were actively involved in developing this version of the Blueprint.

The primary objective of this project is to bring together Hawaii’s climate change scientists, Molokai’s traditional fishpond managers, and other natural resource managers to share scientific and cultural knowledge and work together as a team to identify adaptive management strategies for two of Molokai’s ancient fishponds. We will accomplish this through a short series of workshops. A secondary objective is to form new and strengthen existing partnerships so we can pool resources and better respond to climate change as an island. We will incorporate workshop results into our strategic plan for the ponds and upland areas, revise our K-6 educational curriculum, create a climate change video featuring Moloka’i kupuna,...
