The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Arkansas Geological Survey (AGS), has gathered available geophysical logs and related data from the USGS office archives in Arkansas and Tennessee as a basis for developing a hydrogeologic framework for the Southeast region of the United States. Similar efforts were undertaken by the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer Study (MERAS) and the Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) Program. The logs compiled for these older efforts were difficult to access from the paper files; however, and partly because of this, older and newer logs were compiled into a single digital database for the current study.
This project established a permafrost monitoring network in this region, providing a baseline of permafrost thermal regimes for assessing future change at a total of 26 automated monitoring stations. Stations have collected year-round temperature data from the active layer and the permafrost starting from the summer of 2011. The strong correspondence between spatial variability in permafrost thermal regime and an existing ecotype map allowed for the development of a map of ‘permafrost thermal classes’ for the broader study region. Further, the annual temperature data was used to calibrate models of soil thermal regimes as a function of climate, providing estimates of both historic and future permafrost thermal regimes...
The western coastline of Alaska is highly susceptible to coastal storms, which can cause coastal erosion, flooding, and have other pernicious effects to the environment and commercial efforts. The reduction in ice coverage due to climate change could potentially increase the frequency and degree of coastal flooding and erosion. Further, estuaries and delta systems act as conduits for storm surges, so when there is less nearshore ice coverage, these systems could introduce storm surge into terrestrial environments unaccustomed to saline intrusion, flooding, or other alien biogeochemical factors. This project quantified the effect of reduced nearshore ice coverage on coastal flooding. The project developed a large...

This database contains a comprehensive inventory of geologic (coral, coral reef, limestone, and sediment) cores and samples collected, analyzed, published, and/or archived by, or in collaboration with, the U.S. Geological Survey St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (USGS SPCMSC). The SPCMSC Geologic Core and Sample Database includes geologic cores and samples collected beginning in the 1970s to present day, from study sites across the world. This database can be accessed through the CoreViewer 3.0 ArcOnline web mapping application, linked below. A copy of the data can also be downloaded from the web mapping application and the metadata is accessible through a link in the header of the application, as...

The Northwest Boreal LCC (NWB LCC) envisions a dynamic landscape that maintains functioning, resilient boreal ecosystems and associated cultural resources. To support this vision, the NWB LCC partnered with the BEACONs Project to implement a new approach to conservation planning, including the identification of ecological benchmarks to support implementation of active adaptive management. Within an adaptive management framework, benchmarks serve as reference areas for detecting and understanding the influence of human activity on ecological systems. They support the identification of management practices that sustain the wide range of environmental, cultural, and economic values of the northwest boreal. The NWB...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Soil Sample Archive is a database of information describing soil and sediment samples collected in support of USGS science. Samples in the archive have been registered with International Generic Sample Numbers, relabeled with bar-coded sample labels, and repacked in containers for long-term preservation. Details of sample collection location, collection date, associated datasets, mass of remaining sample, storage locations, and other relevant information are tabulated here so that interested parties may identify associated datasets and search, sort, and gain access to archived samples.
This research project identified effective landowner engagement strategies and incentives to sustain ecosystem services (e.g., clean water, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, recreation, aesthetics) in the Southeastern United States through a focused case in three major habitat types (bottomland hardwoods, open pine stands, and grasslands) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks region. A geospatial analysis was used to quantify program participation and expected costs for selected landowner engagement scenarios and program delivery options.

Since 2002, the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center’s Samples Repository supports research by providing secure storage for geological, biological, and geochemical samples; maintaining organization and an active inventory of these sample collections; and providing access to these collections for study and reuse. This collections inventory has been compiled, organized, and released as a searchable database to provide researchers and the general public with means to discover and request scientific sample material preserved and maintained by the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center Samples Repository. Updates are made to the inventory as the collections grow, and version history information is available...

The Mineral Development Atlas (MDA) was a joint project by the United State Geological Survey (USGS), the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM), and the state surveys of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa, and was launched in 1945 to gather information about mining and exploration in the lead-zinc district. The Atlas consists of section maps at 1:2400 scale showing exploration and mining activity in the lead-zinc district of the Upper Mississippi Valley. When the USGS offices in Platteville, WI closed, the Atlas was distributed to the states. The Wisconsin portion covers primarily Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette Counties, and WGNHS is currently working towards making the Wisconsin portion of the Atlas publicly available online....
