High-resolution topographic surveys were conducted at two pools on the Carmel River between 2014 and 2019 using a survey-grade total station. The Dam Reach pool (DMPOOL) is located within the Dam Reach, approximately 450 meters downstream of the former site of the San Clemente Dam. The Sleepy Hollow pool (SHPOOL) is located within the Sleepy Hollow reach, approximately 2.25 kilometers downstream of the former site of the San Clemente Dam. Both pools were surveyed in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 using a total station, in conjunction with the channel cross-section surveys also conducted as part of this study (see accompanying file within this data release for topographic survey transect data). For the 2015 survey,...

The region covers the entirety of Charleston County and portions of Berkeley, Colleton, Dorchester, and Georgetown Counties. Units locally exposed at the surface range in age from middle Eocene to Holocene, but most of the area is covered by Quaternary interglacial deposits. These are, from oldest to youngest, the Okefenokee, Waccamaw(?), Penholoway, Ladson, Ten Mile Hill, and Wando Formations and the Silver Bluff beds. Two cross sections (not included in the database), one running southeast from Harleyville to the coastline on James Island and the other running...
Classified land cover and vegetation canopy cover data for an aeolian dune field near Lees Ferry, AZ
These data were compiled for assessing how geomorphic changes measured as topographic differences from repeat surveys represent measured and modelled estimates of aeolian sediment transport and dune mobility. Objective(s) of our study were to investigate whether topographic changes can serve as a proxy for aeolian transport and sediment mobility in dunefield environments. This was accomplished by relating topographic changes to modeled and observed estimates of sediment transport and dune mobility over months to decades within a partially vegetated dunefield starved of upwind sediment supplies. We specifically tested if topographic changes measured as net and total volume changes and topographic surface roughness...

This data release supersedes version 1, published in 2017 under https://doi.org/10.5066/F74M93HF. Please see Version_History_P9HG8UDS.txt below for more information. Pebble-count data were collected during summer surveys (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) at ten sites along the Carmel River, California. Grain-size measurements were made at four to six transects per site using a 0.5 by 0.5 m sampling frame, with approximately 100 sediment-particle counts per transect. Each transect was defined by coordinates on the left and right sides of the river, and sediment grain sizes were measured at five equally spaced locations within the bankfull channel on the transect defined by those endpoint coordinates...

The grain size of sediment on the riverbed was measured during 20 surveys on the Elwha River, Washington, between 2006 and 2017. Most data were collected along the same transects where channel topography was measured (see related child item in this data release: https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/5a989288e4b06990606de04b). Measurements of sediment ranging from medium sand to boulders were made using the CobbleCam digital photographic technique (Warrick and others, 2009), which uses a calibrated autocorrelation algorithm (Rubin, 2004) to calculate the mean grain size of sediment from pixels in downward-looking digital photographs. This technique yields grain-size values accurate to within 14 percent of those...

Bathymetric, topographic, and grain-size data were collected from May 2013 to October 2016 along a 15-mi reach of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Arizona by the U.S. Geological Survey Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center. The study reach is located from river miles -15 at the base of Glen Canyon Dam to 0 at Lees Ferry. Channel bathymetry was mapped using multibeam bathymetry collected in November 2014 and single beam bathymetry collected in February 2015, August 2015, February 2016, and June 2016. Subaerial topography was mapped using photogrammetry derived from aerial Imagery collected in May 2013 and ground-based total-stations collected in February 2015, October 2015, and October...
The rock type, or lithology, of river gravels provides information about the bedrock source area of that material, and can act as a tracer to help assess relative gravel contributions from tributaries or distinct valley deposits. Between July 2020 and August 2021, gravels at 29 sites in the Sauk, Suiattle and White Chuck rivers were collected and sorted into simple lithologic categories. The data release here provides a summary of those raw data. These data support analyses presented in Anderson et al. (2022). Each row of the attached comma-separated value (CSV) file reports masses, in kilograms, of gravel in various lithologic categories for a given sample. Each sample consisted of 25-30 kg of gravel with intermediate-axis...

The database for the Preliminary Geologic Map of the Cherry Hill Quadrangle, Dinwiddie, Sussex, and Greensville Counties, Virginia geographically straddles the Coastal Plain and Piedmont Provinces along the Tidewater Fall Line. Rocks of the eastern Piedmont Roanoke Rapids terrane crop out in the western part of the quadrangle and consist of greenschist- to amphibolite-facies Neoproterozoic felsic to intermediate metavolcanic rocks, some of which contain flattened quartz phenocrysts and are locally isoclinally folded; greenstone that is locally primary layered; and intrusive metadiorite and metagabbro, much of which has been altered to amphibolite. Most of these rocks are strongly foliated and jointed. Greenschist-facies...

This portion of the data release presents sediment deposition in the estuary as measured using rod surface elevation tables (RSETs) at fifteen locations throughout the Elwha River estuary, Washington, from August 2011 to June 2014 (no associated USGS Field Activities numbers because data were collected predominantly by biologists from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe). The locations of the RSETs were determined with a hand-held global positioning system (GPS). We measured sediment deposition from 2011 to 2013 using the RSET table and pins at 36 points around each RSET. Because of extensive sediment deposition in the estuary, we needed to modify our methodology in 2014. We fabricated a new attachment for the RSET base...

Geologic, sediment texture, and physiographic zone maps characterize the sea floor south and west of Martha's Vineyard and north of Nantucket, Massachusetts. These maps were derived from interpretations of seismic-reflection profiles, high-resolution bathymetry, acoustic-backscatter intensity, bottom photographs, and surficial sediment samples. The interpretation of the seismic stratigraphy and mapping of glacial and Holocene marine units provided a foundation on which the surficial maps were created. This mapping is a result of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to characterize the surface and subsurface geologic framework offshore of...

To provide daily mean streamflow values at ungaged (partial-record) sites within the Yankee Fork Salmon River watershed, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, used discharge measurements at three partial-record sites and related those measurements to a nearby USGS real-time streamgage (index site). Daily mean streamflow was estimated by developing a regression relationship between each partial-record site and the index site for water years 2012-2019. These data are intended to provide daily mean streamflow estimates at partial-record sites as part of a larger study (Clark and others, 2021) to estimate sediment loading for each site.

This portion of the data release presents topographic data collected at 5 study sites along Elwha River, Washington between 2006 and 2017. Elevations along channel-perpendicular transects were surveyed using a total station and prism rod. Initial geodetic control was established using static global positioning system (GPS) occupations. A total station was subsequently used to expand and maintain the survey control network at each site. All survey data were referenced to the NAD83 datum, using the UTM, zone 10, coordinate reference system. All elevations were referenced to the NAVD88 vertical datum. Based on repeat measurements of points with known positions, we estimated the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the...
