Maintaining the native prairie lands of the Northern Great Plains (NGP), which provide an important habitat for declining grassland species, requires anticipating the effects of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and climate change on the region’s vegetation. Specifically, climate change threatens NGP grasslands by increasing the potential encroachment of native woody species into areas where they were previously only present in minor numbers. This project used a dynamic vegetation model to simulate vegetation type (grassland, shrubland, woodland, and forest) for the NGP for a range of projected future climates and relevant management scenarios. The sagebrush rangelands of the Great Basin provide crucial habitat for a diversity of wildlife, including the pronghorn and the greater sage-grouse. These water-limited, highly-managed ecosystems have already been degraded by wildfires, the expansion of invasive grasses, and livestock grazing, and are expected to experience additional stress as climate and land use conditions change. Effective management of sagebrush ecosystems in the future will require the ability to understand and predict these future changes. Data included in this data set are from edge-of-field surveys of managed fields that recorded the presence of erosional features and cover of vegetation and bare ground on 320 Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields across central and western United States. Field sampling data was recorded across six US Department of Agriculture Farm Production Regions (Corn belt, Lake states, Mountain, Northern plains, Pacific, Southern plains) from 2016 to 2019. The data set consists of bird abundance data collected in undisturbed grassland fields enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and former CRP fields that were converted to cropland, grazing land, or hayland in nine counties in four states (Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota) in the northern Great Plains. The study was initiated in 1990, but data were only included in this dataset for the 18 years in which all three of the post-CRP management practices occurred, i.e., 1996–2003 and 2008–2017. Seabeach amaranth (Amaranthus pumilus) is a plant species that was once prevalent on beaches of the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast but is now listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For much of the 20th century, seabeach amaranth was absent from the mid-Atlantic coast and thought to be extinct, presumably as a result of increased development and recreational pressure. The Invasion of native communities by cool-season introduced grasses, especially smooth brome and Kentucky bluegrass in upland prairies, reed canary grass in wetlands, is on one of the most important management issues on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service)-owned lands. Two adaptive management projects, the Native Prairie and Reed Canary Grass Adaptive Management Projects were funded by USGS to examine restoration efforts on NWRs and WMDs in USFWS Regions 3 and 6. This project will support the completion of two decision support tools that are essential to long-term resource management success.
