Over the past 15 years Douglas County, NV has removed production wells in northern Carson Valley from use due to relatively high arsenic concentrations (Carl Ruschmeyer, January 2013, Douglas County Public Works Director, verbal communication). To maintain the supply of water to the public, the town of Minden has been providing water to Douglas County and Carson City. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, Arkansas Geological Survey, and the Union County Water Conservation Board, has monitored water levels as a part of an ongoing effort to provide information for management of the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. The USGS has produced reports, at various intervals, to describe groundwater conditions in the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. These datasets provide the locations of and groundwater-level altitudes from 306 wells that were used to construct a potentiometric contour surface of the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. This USGS data release consists of two geospatial datasets. One dataset contains contours representing water levels based on depth-to-groundwater measurements made at 98 wells in July of 2012 in the Lahontan Valley near Fallon, NV. The second dataset contains contours representing water level change in the shallow aquifer in Lahontan Valley from 1992 - 2012 based on depth-to-groundwater measurements made in 73 wells in 1992 and 2012, with limited measurements made in 2013.
