Northeast SJV (NESJV), Southeast SJV (SESJV), Western SJV (WSJV), and Southern SJV (SSJV). These regions were primarily defined from the California Department of Water Resources SJV groundwater subbasins (CDWR, 2003); minor modifications were made to the CDWR defined subbasin boundaries to optimize separation of groundwater derived from the Sierra Nevada to the east and from the Coast Ranges to the west under predevelopment conditions. Each region was divided into equal-area grid cells, ranging from 280 km2 in the SESJV to 984 km2 in the SSJV, for a total of 88 cells. This report provides a full digitization of historic groundwater-quality and depth-to-water data from Mendenhall and others (1916) Water Supply Paper 398, “Ground Water in San Joaquin Valley, California” in a modern format suitable for further analysis of California’s water supply resources. Included are geochemical data for over 400 wells collected by Mendenhall in the fall of 1910, as well as depth-to-water and well construction information from over 4000 wells compiled by his team from over 15 years of well surveys throughout the San Joaquin Valley. These contours represent water level change in the shallow aquifer in Lahontan Valley from 1992 - 2012 based on depth-to-groundwater measurements made in 73 wells in 1992 and 2012, with limited measurements made in 2013. Measurements collected in 2013 were used to develop the contours only in limited cases where the measurement well was being pumped or was inaccessible in 2012. Water-level change in the shallow aquifer was determined by differencing measurements made in 1992 with current measurements. The difference values were used to interpolate a change surface and contours were developed from that surface.

Hereafter "spring" is defined as the periods of January 1 to May 31, and December 1 to December 31. This dataset is the result of measurements of groundwater levels in the Equus Beds aquifer near Wichita, Kansas, in January 2016. Potentiometric surfaces are interpolated for the shallow and deep parts of the aquifer, and rasters of the potentiometric surfaces are included in this data release. Values represent groundwater withdrawals from the Floridan aquifer system for 2000 in the southeastern United States. Withdrawals were computed by multiplying the gross groundwater withdrawals for each county by a coefficient representing the proportion of total groundwater withdrawals coming from each aquifer. Coefficients for each county and water-use category were back-calculated from data published in Marella and Berndt, 2005, Water withdrawals and trends from the Floridan aquifer system in the southeastern United States, 1950–2000: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1278, 20 p. and also from unpublished data from the U.S. Geological Survey South Atlantic Water Science Center (Georgia District).

The process whereby hydrogeologists interpret the available information to produce a justifiable set of simplifying assumptions to describe a groundwater system is called conceptual modelling. Although this process is inherent in all hydrogeological assessments and can therefore be regarded as synonymous with hydrogeological practice there are no standard specifications for it. Removal of water from terrestrial subsurface storage is a natural consequence of groundwater withdrawals, but global depletion is not well characterized. Cumulative groundwater depletion represents a transfer of mass from land to the oceans that contributes to sea-level rise. Depletion is directly calculated using calibrated groundwater models, analytical approaches, or volumetric budget analyses for multiple aquifer systems. Development of coal-bed natural gas (CBNG) in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming, has increased substantially in recent years. Among environmental concerns associated with this development is the fate of groundwater removed with the gas. A preferred water-management option is storage in surface impoundments. Reactive solute transport models are useful tools for analyzing complex geochemical behavior resulting from biodegradation of organic compounds by multiple terminal electron acceptors (TEAPs). The impact of agricultural chemicals on groundwater quality depends on the interactions of biogeochemical and hydrologic factors. Depth-to-water data in the San Joaquin Valley, CA were collected in 1910 and published in Mendenhall and others, 1916. These data were used to create a depth-to-water contour of the Valley described in Plate 1 entitled "Map of San Joaquin Valley, California showing artesian areas, ground-water levels and location of pumping plants", which includes a depiction of geographical areas where flowing well (artesian) conditions existed in 1910. These "Areas of flowing wells" have been converted into a digital vector format (ArcGIS Shapefile) for use in future research.
