In the Chenango River Basin, New York, glacial valley-fill unconfined and confined aquifers are an important source of drinking-water supplies. The U.S. Geological Survey developed three-dimensional groundwater-flow models (MODFLOW-NWT code) of three study areas in the basin to improve understanding of groundwater flow and delineate areas contributing recharge to 16 production wells as part of an effort to protect the source of water to these wells. The modeled areas were the Cortland study area in Cortland County (CCSA), Greene study area (GSA), and the Cincinnatus study area (CSA). Production wells in CCSA tap unconfined aquifers, whereas the production wells in GSA and CSA are screened in confined aquifers. The...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing online maps of water-table and potentiometric-surface altitude in the upper glacial, Magothy, Jameco, Lloyd, and North Shore aquifers on Long Island, New York, April–May 2016. Also provided is a depth-to-water map for Long Island, New York, April–May 2016. The USGS makes these maps and geospatial data available as REST Open Map Services (as well as HTTP, JSON, KML, and shapefile), so end-users can consume them on mobile and web clients. A companion report, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3398 (Como and others, 2018; https://doi.org/10.3133/sim3398) further describes data collection and map preparation and presents 68x22 in. Portable Document...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, has investigated the hydrology of the Great Dismal Swamp (Swamp) National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) in Virginia and North Carolina and developed a three-dimensional numerical model to simulate groundwater and surface-water hydrology. The model was developed with MODFLOW-NWT, a USGS numerical groundwater flow modeling program, in combination with the Surface-Water Routing Process, a software package that simulates dynamic surface-water flows, water-control-structure management, and groundwater/surface-water interactions. The steady-state model was calibrated to average spring conditions using automated parameter estimation software...

In 2016, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) began development of a regional-scale numerical model of the Long Island aquifer system, as part of the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. The three-dimensional groundwater-flow model was developed to evaluate 1) responses of the hydrologic system to changes in natural and anthropogenic hydraulic stresses 2) the subsurface distribution of groundwater age, and 3) the regional-scale distribution of groundwater travel times and the source of water to fresh surface waters and coastal receiving waters. The model also provides the groundwater flow components used to define model boundaries for possible inset models used for local-scale analyses. Unconsolidated...

A three-dimensional, groundwater flow model was developed with the numerical code MODFLOW-NWT to represent changes in groundwater pumping and aquifer recharge in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system from Long Island, New York to North Carolina. The model was constructed using existing hydrogeologic and geospatial information to represent the aquifer system geometry, boundaries, and hydraulic properties of the 19 separate regional aquifers and confining units within the aquifer system. The model was calibrated using an inverse modeling parameter-estimation (PEST) technique to conditions from 1986 to 2008, the period for which data are most complete and reliable. The simulation period for this analysis...
