The collection of borehole geophysical logs data was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey South Atlantic Water Science Center in the vicinity of the Cristex Drum National Priorities List Superfund Site near Oxford, North Carolina, during January through March 2016. In an effort to assist the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the development of a conceptual groundwater model for the assessment of current contaminant distribution and future migration of contaminants, borehole geophysical log and image data collection, which included the delineation of more than 150 subsurface features (primarily fracture orientations) in 3 open borehole wells.
Nitrate contamination of groundwater is widespread and persistent in the shallow surficial aquifer of northwestern Whatcom County where dairy farming and forage production is a primary land-use activity. Application of dairy manure to cropland is intended to provide nutrients for crop growth and improve soil quality with the ideal goal to match the rate of nutrient application to that rate of nutrient removal by the crop. A study to test an alternate strategy for scheduling manure application to fields based on hydrologic properties of specific soils and fields, measurements of manure and soil parameters, and current and forecasted precipitation for the three days immediately following manure application is being...

The water resources in Tennessee are likely to be stressed in the future by factors such as population increase, urban and suburban development, climate change, and other competing demands. Water-resource managers and policy makers will need accurate water-use data for regional water-supply planning including infrastructure investment, conservation, and cost-recovery strategies. Quantifying public-supply and self-supplied industrial water use and relating the use to effects on -water resources and natural hydrologic systems; is important for the public and policy makers. This dataset includes public-supply water-use and self-supplied industrial water-use information for the State of Tennessee in 2010. Public supply...

Groundwater-quality data were collected from 748 wells as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Project of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Program from May 2012 through December 2013. The data were collected from four types of well networks: principal aquifer study networks, which assess the quality of groundwater used for public water supply; land-use study networks, which assess land-use effects on shallow groundwater quality; major aquifer study networks, which assess the quality of groundwater used for domestic supply; and enhanced trends networks, which evaluate the time scales during which groundwater quality changes. Groundwater samples were analyzed for a large number of water-quality...
The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 71 domestic wells and 4 springs in Nevada, Yuba, Sierra, and Placer Counties, California in 2015-2016. The sites were sampled for the Yuba and Bear Watersheds Shallow Aquifer Study Unit of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic drinking water supply. Domestic wells commonly are screened at shallower depths than are public-supply wells. The Yuba and Bear Watersheds Shallow Aquifer Study Unit includes the hard rock systems of the eastern Sierra Nevada in the Upper Yuba and Upper Bear watersheds....

A revised regional groundwater-flow model using a modified grid in conjunction with USGS MODFLOW-2000 was developed to the predict the effects of Lower Floridan aquifer (LFA) groundwater pumpage on the Upper Floridan aquifer (UFA) in the Barbour Pointe community, Chatham County, Georgia. The model was modified using hydrogeologic information obtained from field investigations at Barbour Pointe, Berwick Plantation near Berwick, Pooler, Hunter Army Airfield, Rincon, and Fort Stewart.
The Ankeny, Iowa wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) was decommissioned in November 2013 providing a unique opportunity to characterize the impacts of WWTF discharge on water quality at the surface-water/groundwater interface in a shallow, unconfined alluvial aquifer. The Ankeny WWTF discharged treated effluent for nearly forty years into Fourmile Creek, located in Ankeny, Iowa. Dataset includes site information (Table 1), analytical methods (Table 2), piezometer water level elevations (Table 3), trace and major element concentrations collected from 2011 to 2013 before the WWTF shutdown (Table 4), and trace and major element concentration collected from 2013 to 2014 after the WWTF shutdown (Table 5).

Data for static groundwater-levels measured in about 645 wells during the period of January-April 2016 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Mojave Water Agency, and other local water districts were compiled to construct a regional water-table map. The downloadable shapefile shows the elevation of the water table in the Mojave River and Morongo groundwater basins. This dataset is a digital representation of the contours presented on Plate 1 of Regional Water Table (2016) in the Mojave River and Morongo Groundwater Basins, Southwestern Mojave Desert, California: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigation Map, doi:10.5066/sim3391, published by Meghan C. This report provides a full digitization of historic groundwater-quality and depth-to-water data from Mendenhall and others (1916) Water Supply Paper 398, “Ground Water in San Joaquin Valley, California” in a modern format suitable for further analysis of California’s water supply resources. Included are geochemical data for over 400 wells collected by Mendenhall in the fall of 1910, as well as depth-to-water and well construction information from over 4000 wells compiled by his team from over 15 years of well surveys throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Additionally, these data provide geospatial and geochemical data for sampled wells in California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV) in support of the publication: Jeffrey...

Widespread nitrate contamination of groundwater in agricultural areas poses a major challenge to sustainable water resources. Efficient analysis of nitrate fluxes across large regions also remains difficult. This study introduces a method of characterizing nitrate transport processes continuously across regional unsaturated zones and groundwater based on surrogate, machine-learning metamodels of an N flux process-based model. The metamodels used boosted regression trees (BRTs) to relate mappable variables to parameters and outputs of a “vertical flux method” (VFM) applied in the Fox-Wolf-Peshtigo (FWP) area in Wisconsin. In this context, the metamodels are upscaling the VFM results throughout the region, and the...
A digital map of the thickness of the surficial unconfined aquifer, including from the land surface and unsaturated zone to the bottom of sediments of geologic units identified as part of the surficial aquifer, was produced to improve understanding of the hydrologic system in the Maryland and Delaware portions of the Delmarva Peninsula. The map is intended to be used in conjunction with other environmental coverages (such land use, wetlands, and soil characteristics) to provide a subsurface hydrogeologic component to studies of nitrate transport that have historically relied on maps of surficial features. It could also be used to study the transport of other water soluble chemicals. The map was made using the...

This dataset is a 900 meter resolution raster representing the depth in meters at which the probability of oxic groundwater occurring is at least 50%, for the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Oxic groundwater was defined as containing O2 values >= 2 mg/L. The values range from 0-100 meters, with 100 representing all depths greater than 100. It was created in support of models which define the oxic/suboxic interface, which is important for determining pathways for nitrate transport in groundwater and in streams. The dataset was derived from a logistic regression of variables representing surficial geology, position in the flow system, and soil drainage.

A soil-water balance model (SWB) was developed to estimate potential recharge and surface runoff for portions of the Cannon River drainage basin, southeast Minnesota, for the period 1995 through 2010. The model was used in the creation of Cannon River streamflow distribution maps, as part of the associated report, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 2017-3390 (http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/SIM20173390). This SWB model was calibrated using three independent hydrograph separation models: PART, Hysep-fixed, and Hysep-sliding method. The basic framework for this model was the statewide Minnesota SWB potential recharge model, described, calibrated, and documented as part of U.S. Geological Survey Scientific...
