These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. Zones in this data set represent spatially contiguous areas that influence ground-water flow in the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system (DVRFS), an approximately 45,000 square-kilometer region of southern Nevada and California. The zones typically represent areas of differing material properties; however, they may also represent spatially similar areas, such as areas of similar infiltration rates. Material properties,...

Hydrologic influences on water levels were investigated at Three Oaks Recreation Area (TORA), a former sand-and-gravel quarry converted into recreational lakes in Crystal Lake, Illinois. From 2009 to 2015, average water levels in the lakes declined nearly 4 feet. It was not clear if these declines were related to variations in weather (precipitation or evaporation) or other hydrologic influences such as municipal supply pumping or nearby quarry operations. Data were collected using three approaches to determine the possibility of such hydrologic influences. First, water levels were collected at 15-minute intervals at three wells equipped with pressure transducers from April 14 through September 27, 2016. The continuous...

The glacial aquifer system of the United States encompasses all or parts of 25 states and is the most widely used supply of drinking water in the Nation (Maupin and Barber, 2005; Maupin and Arnold, 2010). A series of seven raster data sets were derived from a database of water-well drillers' records that was compiled in partial fulfillment of the goals of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Groundwater Availability and Use assessment program (U.S. Geological Survey, 2002). They contain hydrogeologic information for areas of the U.S. that are north of the southern limit of Pleistocene glaciation, including the total thickness of glacial deposits, thickness of coarse-grained sediment within the glacial deposits, specific-capacity...

This digital data set defines the boundary of the ground-water flow model by D'Agnese and others (1997). This steady-state, 3-layer ground-water flow model was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support investigations at Yucca Mountain, Nevada (see "Larger Work Citation", Chapter A, pages 7-8, for details). The model area encompasses approximately 35,000 square-kilometers of...

Summary Heat from wildfires can produce a two-layer system composed of extremely dry soil covered by a layer of ash, which when subjected to rainfall, may produce extreme floods. To understand the soil physics controlling runoff for these initial conditions, we used a small, portable disk infiltrometer to measure two hydraulic properties: (1) near-saturated hydraulic conductivity, Kf and (2) sorptivity, S(θi), as a function of initial soil moisture content, θi, ranging from extremely dry conditions (θi < 0.02 cm3 cm−3) to near saturation. In the field and in the laboratory replicate measurements were made of ash, reference soils, soils unaffected by fire, and fire-affected soils. Each has a different degrees of...

The data contained in this data release support USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2020-5023, "Distribution of selected hydrogeologic characteristics of the upper glacial and Magothy aquifers, Long Island, New York" (Walter and Finkelstein, 2020). This data release contains estimates of aquifer texture describing the Long Island aquifer system. These estimates in total can be considered a model of aquifer texture describing unconsolidated sediments in the following principal units: 1) Upper glacial aquifer, 2) Jameco aquifer, 3) Monmouth Greensand confining unit, and 4)...
Note: this data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. A water-supply plan is being developed for Wake County, North Carolina, in accordance with the 50-year planning window used by the North Carolina Division of Water Resources for residents in unincorporated areas of the county. To develop this supply plan, Wake County seeks to better understand the sustainability of groundwater resources of the regolith/fractured-rock aquifer system. Slug tests were performed in 17 wells in the Wake County area, during 2020 and 2021, to provide values of horizontal hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity to support the development of Wake County’s water-supply plan. Wake County is in the Piedmont...
