This Data Release summarizes measurements of hydraulic and physical properties of soils and ash at sites in the area impacted by the 2017 Thomas Fire, USA. Physical properties include dry bulk density, loss on ignition, and saturated soil water content. Hydraulic properties include field-saturated hydraulic conductivity, sorptivity, Green-Ampt wetting front potential, and soil water retention. These measurements provide a foundation to reduce uncertainty of parameters in hydrologic models used to predict water-related hazards, water quality, and water quantity. Note that all methods of data acquisition and processing, column headings, and data annotations are explained in the metadata files.

This tabular dataset represents monthly flow at 160 stream gages used for surface-water flow and flow-difference observations for the Rio Grande Transboundary Integrated Hydrologic Model (RGTIHM). Flow in this tabular dataset is specified monthly, when available, at each observation point as a rate (volume per time) in units of cubic feet per day. See the Site_Name attribute in the RGTIHM_Surface_Water_Obs feature class for the location of the stream gages.

This dataset contains annual irrigated acreage for New Mexico and Texas from 1938 through 2010 for six canal service units used in the Lower Rio Grande Basin groundwater flow model (SSPA, 2007). Irrigated acreage values were extracted from the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer’s (NMOSE’s) Canal spreadsheet, version 11.2 (Barroll, P., NMOSE, written commun., 2011).

This dataset contains annual agricultural groundwater pumping values in 1975 for Doña Ana County; in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010 for Doña Ana and Sierra Counties; and in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 for the Lower Rio Grande Water Master District in New Mexico. Groundwater pumping values were extracted from Sorensen (1977), Sorensen (1982), Wilson (1986), Wilson (1992), Wilson and Lucero (1998), Wilson and others (2003), Longworth and others (2008), Stangl (2010), Longworth and others (2013), Serrano (2014), and Serrano (2015). Groundwater pumping values are presented in units of acre-feet.

Allotment and allocation values were extracted from the Allocation spreadsheet (Ferguson, I., Bureau of Reclamation, written commun., 2016). Aquifer testing was conducted in the Paradox Valley alluvial aquifer in Montrose County, Colorado, including short-term (slug tests) and long-term (pumping tests) stresses on the hydrologic system to determine hydraulic properties of the aquifer. Slug tests were conducted at four wells in March 2013, with only one well producing data that could be interpreted using analytical solutions. In the other three slug tests, water-level displacement was not instantaneous and displayed substantial noise meaning that the analytical solutions could not be applied. This USGS data release contains (1) geologic-unit top-surface altitudes in boreholes and (2) aquifer-test time-series water-level drawdowns, recoveries, and supporting data from the Piney Point aquifer in Virginia from 2009 through 2015.
