Whenever a neighborhood or community group objects to a proposed development in their area, someone questions whether the objections are part of a NIMBY , or "Not in My Backyard" pattern of responses. A well-dated pollen record from a large lake located on the meadow?steppe ecotone provides a history of ecotone shift in response to monsoonal climate changes over the last 6000 years in the central Tibetan Plateau. The pollen record indicates that the ecotone shifted eastward during 6000?4900, 4400?3900, and 2800?1600 cal. yr BP when steppes occupied this region, whereas it shifted westward during the other intervals when the steppes were replaced by meadows. The quantitative reconstruction of paleoclimate derived from the pollen record shows that monsoon precipitation fluctuated around the present level over the last 6000 years in the central Tibetan Plateau. Chemical composition of 24 elements for sed- iments and suspended solids, water parameters and the diatoms from Yatsushiro Bay tidal flat, Kuma River, and Arase Dam have been determined to examine changes from 2002 to 2013. In 2002, sediment delivered to the bay by the Kuma River was restricted by the Arase Dam; however, in April 2010 two gates were opened and also repeated sea- sonal flushing allowing resumption of natural sediment transport. Sr isotope ratios in carbonate-rich lacustrine strata provide highly resolved and geographically specific records of past changes in weathering and regional drainage patterns. The Eocene Green River Formation is perhaps the best documented pre-Quaternary lacustrine unit in the world; therefore, these strata are ideally suited for studying the behavior of Sr. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios measured for primary carbonate in lake expansion- contraction cycles of the Laney Member are directly linked to changing lake facies.
