This layer represents the lakes in the Crown of the Continent with a 50km buffer. This layer has been produced by merging the "WATERBODY_2" shapefiles from relevant NHN folders obtained from GeoBase - National Hydro Network (NHN) for Canada within the CCE and the "NHDWaterbody" shapefile for Montana, US. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the landscape scale. A joint venture involving the National Atlas programs in Canada (Natural Resources Canada), Mexico (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía), and the United States (U.S. Geological Survey), as well as the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation, has led to the release (June 2004) of several new products: an updated paper map of North America, and its associated geospatial data sets and their metadata. Lake polygons within the Fish Creek Watershed, Alaska were created and classified for a number of variables relevant to size, depth, hydrology, connectivity etc. Products derived from a 5m resolution IfSAR digital surface model by calculating a zero slope. Each feature was expanded by one pixel around the entire perimeter since all waterbodies were truncated by this during the slope calculation. Lakes >=1ha were manually extracted from the dataset and their perimeters further corrected using 2002 CIR orthophotography.
Steams and lakes selected from 1:100,000 scale US Census Bureau TIGER files. Selected to approximately match data shown in USGS 1:2,000,000 scale DLG files. Names are mostly from TIGER, also from Montana DOT county maps and USGS quads. Not all polygons are water bodies. Select class > 0 before shading polygons. Select label eq "N" before labeling small scale maps, or use "routetext hydro name name" rather than "arctext" to label streams.
