Vegetation and land-cover changes are not always directional but follow complex trajectories over space and time, driven by changing anthropogenic and abiotic conditions. We present a multi-observational approach to land-change analysis that addresses the complex geographic and temporal variability of vegetation changes related to climate and land use. Using land-ownership data as a proxy for land-use practices, multitemporal land-cover maps, and repeat photography dating to the late 19th century, we examine changing spatial and temporal distributions of two vegetation types with high conservation value in the southwestern United States: grasslands and riparian vegetation. In contrast to many reported vegetation...

The 2020 North American Land Cover 30-meter dataset was produced as part of the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS), a trilateral effort between Natural Resources Canada, the United States Geological Survey, and three Mexican organizations including the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía), National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of the Biodiversity (Comisión Nacional Para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad), and the National Forestry Commission of Mexico (Comisión Nacional Forestal). The collaboration is facilitated by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, an international organization created by the Canada, Mexico,...

This data set replaces the 2010 edition (Edition 1.0) of the 2005 Land Cover of North America. Following the release of the first 2005 land cover data, several errors were identified in the data, including both errors in labeling and misinterpretation of thematic classes. To correct the labeling errors, each country focused on its national territory and corrected the errors which it considered most critical or misleading. For the continental data sets (including surrounding water fringe) 17440830 pixels (4.33% of the area) changed in the update. The following national counts exclude the water fringe: Canada, 10223412 pixels changed (6.44%); Mexico, 141142 pixels changed (0.45%), and U.S., 6878656 pixels changed...

This data set shows areas where the land cover classification changed between 2005and 2010. The 2005-2010 Land Cover Change of North America at 250 meters wasproduced as part of the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS), atrilateral effort between the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, the United StatesGeological Survey, and three Mexican organizations including the National Instituteof Statistics and Geography (Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia),National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of the Biodiversity (ComisiónNacional Para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad), and the National ForestryCommission of Mexico (Comisión Nacional Forestal). The collaboration isfacilitated by...

The National Map Viewer and Download Platform allows visualization and download of our most current topographic base map data and products for free. Managed by the USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP), users can access data from all eight primary data themes of The National Map, and products, such as US Topo, Historical Topographic Maps, and Map Indices. The viewer platform was initially extended upon the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency's (NGA) Palanterra x3 viewer. Beta applications are in development to replace functionality of older viewer technology and include: Bulk Download Client, Download Manager, topoView, Bulk Point Query, and Mobile Download Client. Additional applications may be added in the...
The LANDFIRE Data Distribution Site is the geospatial data gateway to search, browse, and download LANDFIRE data. The Data Distribution Site directs you to the LANDFIRE Viewer, where you can view the 30-meter resolution layers, metadata, and descriptions. This viewer provides assorted tools allowing the ability to interact and manipulate any data displayed within the viewer. Data extents are defined by dragging an extent or defining coordinates. All LANDFIRE data are free and available to everyone. The default download is an ESRI grid raster format with attributes and includes metadata in a zipped file. Options to specify different data formats and projections are available through the viewer's Modify Data Request...

The North American Environmental Atlas is an interactive mapping tool to research, analyze and manage environmental issues in Canada, United States and Mexico. Maps are downloadable free of charge and available in an easy to use map viewer format. The CEC uses maps in the Atlas to: •Identify priority areas to conserve biodiversity •Track cross-border transfers of pollutants •Monitor CO2 emissions across major transportation routes •Predict the spread of invasive species
