This data release documents spatiotemporal water-quality, landscape, and climatic conditions in Fairfax County, Virginia from 2007 through 2018. These data were used to evaluate the water-quality and ecological condition of 20 Fairfax County watersheds monitored since 2007. Data include measures of water-quality, precipitation, air temperature, land use, land cover, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, soil properties, geologic setting, and stream networks. Annual values from 2007 through 2018 are reported for data expected to change over time. Watershed-specific values are reported for data that differ across the landscape. Annual values for the 20 study watersheds and Fairfax County are reported in the file...

Understanding how sea-level rise will affect coastal landforms and the species and habitats they support is critical for developing approaches that balance the needs of humans and native species. Given the magnitude of the threat posed by sea-level rise, and the urgency to better understand it, there is an increasing need to forecast sea-level rise effects on barrier islands. To address this problem, scientists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Coastal and Marine Geology program are developing Bayesian networks as a tool to evaluate and to forecast the effects of sea-level rise on shoreline change, barrier island geomorphology, and habitat availability for species such as the piping plover (Charadrius melodus)...

This dataset includes the following measurements made over a xeric tall grass prairie in the southwest portion of Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge in 2011 and 2012: 1) half hourly eddy covariance measurements of latent heat flux (evapotranspiration) and fluxes of carbon dioxide and sensible heat, and friction velocity (U star) 2) half hour averages of solar and net radiation; photosynthetically active radiation; air temperature and humidity; soil temperature, moisture, and heat flux; wind speed and direction; and half hour sums of precipitation. 3) approximately weekly measurements of vegetation including leaf area index, height of vegetation, dry and wet weights

The Gap Analysis Project (GAP) Analytical Database represents a synthesis of three core datasets for the conterminous U.S. Specifically 1) the GAP/LANDFIRE National Terrestrial Ecosystems_2011; 2) the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) 1.4; and 3) the Species Ranges and Habitat Distribution Models for all terrestrial vertebrates. This database provides a mechanism to effiiently obtain summary statistics of those for a variety of spatial extents, including US states, US counties, Landscape Conservation Cooperation Network Areas, EPA's Level III-IV Ecoregions of the United States, and Level I-III Ecoregions of North America and 12-digit (6th level) hydrologic units. Understanding how sea-level rise will affect coastal landforms and the species and habitats they support is critical for crafting approaches that balance the needs of humans and native species. Given this increasing need to forecast sea-level rise effects on barrier islands in the near and long terms, we are developing Bayesian networks to evaluate and to forecast the cascading effects of sea-level rise on shoreline change, barrier island state, and piping plover habitat availability. We use publicly available data products, such as lidar, orthophotography, and geomorphic feature sets derived from those, to extract metrics of barrier island characteristics at consistent sampling distances. The metrics are then incorporated...

The 'Sheep Tanks Area' file is part of the Grover Heinrichs mining collection. Grover was the Vice President of Heinrichs GEOEXploration, located in Tucson, Arizona. The collection contains over 1,400 folders including economic geology reports, maps, photos, correspondence, drill logs and other related materials. The focus of much of the information is on the western United States, particularly Arizona, but the collection also includes files on mining activity throughout the United States, foreign countries, and 82 mineral commodities.
This research focuses on understanding processes controlling temporal and spatial variability in aquatic carbon fluxes in headwater streams. Headwater streams are areas of active carbon cycling because of steep topographic gradients, complex soil and vegetation patterns, and an abundance of small lakes and streams. The project will combine information from the following major components: High-frequency measurements of aquatic carbon fluxes using in-stream sensors will provide information on temporal dynamics at unprecedented resolution. A geostatistical model will be developed to characterize relations between landscape type (e.g., wetlands, forest, tundra) and aquatic C dynamics and fluxes. Variations in fluxes...

Global land-use/land-cover (LULC) change projections and historical datasets are typically available at coarse grid resolutions and are often incompatible with modeling applications at local to regional scales. The difficulty of downscaling and reapportioning global gridded LULC change projections to regional boundaries is a barrier to the use of these datasets in a state-and-transition simulation model (STSM) framework. Here we compare three downscaling techniques to transform gridded LULC transitions into spatial scales and thematic LULC classes appropriate for use in a regional STSM. For each downscaling approach, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) LULC...

Water shortages in California are a growing concern amidst ongoing drought, earlier spring snowmelt, projected future climate warming, and currently mandated water use restrictions. Increases in population and land use in coming decades will place additional pressure on already limited available water supplies. We used a state-and-transition simulation model to project future changes in developed (municipal and industrial) and agricultural land use to estimate associated water use demand from 2012 to 2062. Under current efficiency rates, total water use was projected to increase 1.8 billion cubic meters (+4.1%) driven primarily by urbanization and shifts to more water intensive crops. Only if currently mandated...
