Compilation of field data collected in the Oregon Coast Range Tyee Formation. Location, strike and dip, Relative composition and bed thickness of interbedded sandstone and siltstone, Schmidt Hammer stiffness, notes, and sampled landslide density are provided. Landslide density is calculated using the manually mapped landslide deposit polygons from LaHusen et al. (2020).

The data include soil texture, soil-water, and estimated soil strength properties for soil map units and from geotechnical investigations of landslide areas affecting highways in the municipalities of Lares, Naranjito, and Utuado, Puerto Rico. The map units are derived from published soil mapping (https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/app/) and have been grouped by municipality, Unified Soil Classification System symbol, and order-of-magnitude ranges of hydraulic conductivity to create generalized map units for assigning soil-water parameters and soil-strength parameters. Each group (generalized unit) includes one or more soil map units. The groups are numbered sequentially from one (1) for each municipality with...

Album caption: Flow failure down a hillside slope on the Nunez Ranch 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Half Moon Bay. Note the man standing at the base of the deposited debris and a second man standing on the lower edge of the cavity at the top of the slide. Additional incipient flow failures with much smaller movements also occurred on the convex hill to the left of the principal landslide. The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) is a Congressionally mandated national archive of geoscience maps, reports, and stratigraphic information. The Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 and its Reauthorizations calls for the U.S. Geological Survey and the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) to cooperatively build this national archive, according to technical and scientific standards whose development is coordinated by the NGMDB. The NGMDB consists of a comprehensive set of publication citations, stratigraphic nomenclature, downloadable content in raster and vector formats, unpublished source information, and guidance on standards development. The NGMDB contains information on more than 110,000 maps and...

This data release provides the locations and certain key metrics of landslide features offshore southern California, including landslide perimeters, scarps, evacuation zones, debris aprons, and slide-prone areas in geographic information system (GIS) shapefile format. The offshore region of southern California is a tectonically active area that includes more than 20 fault-bounded basins and ridges that are subject to various types of mass-wasting and landslide processes. The collection of high-resolution seafloor mapping data offshore southern California, mostly within the last 25 years, provide a new data set that forms the basis for the identification and mapping of landslides and slide-related features throughout...

From late December 2022 to January 2023, a series of atmospheric river storms produced widespread landsliding in the San Francisco Bay area of California. USGS scientists performed reconnaissance field work to document the extent of landsliding in the region and compiled reports of landslides from media and California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports. This data release documents locations of road cut and shallow hillslope landslides triggered between December 31, 2022 and January 18, 2023. This inventory is not intended to be a complete inventory, but a reporting of observations made with limited time and resources. The point locations include descriptions and associated attributes, described in the metadata. Media...

This data release contains extent shapefiles for 16 hypothetical slope failure scenarios for a landslide complex at Barry Arm, western Prince William Sound, Alaska. The landslide is likely active due to debuttressing from the retreat of Barry Glacier (Dai and others, 2020) and sits above Barry Arm, posing a tsunami risk in the event of slope failure (Barnhart and others, 2021). Since discovery of the landslide by a citizen scientist in 2020, kinematic structural elements have been mapped (Coe and others, 2020) and ground-based and satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) have been used to track ongoing movement at a high spatial resolution (Schaefer and others, 2020; Schaefer and others, 2022). These efforts have...

On May 25th, 2014, a 54.5 Mm3 rock avalanche occurred in the West Salt Creek valley in western Colorado following heavy rainfall on top of snow (Coe and others, 2016a). The data in this project includes boulder density in 20-m x 20-m grid cells for the entire West Salt Creek rock avalanche deposit. The grid cells cover 2,154,800 m2, which accounts for nearly the entire surface of the deposit. We estimated boulder density by counting 1-m or larger diameter boulders of sedimentary rock that are visible in high-resolution Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) imagery collected for the area in July of 2014 (Coe and others, 2016b). Basalt boulders were excluded from the count because field observations indicated that they generally...

Chalk Cliffs, located 8 miles southwest of Buena Vista, Colorado, is one of the most active debris-flow areas in the state (U.S. Geological Survey). This "Child item" page includes videos of debris flows captured by one of the high-definition cameras at the monitoring site in Chalk Cliffs, CO. This camera (Wide-angle Camera) is located on the opposite side of the basin from Station 1 and has a broad view of the channel. The attached figure "station_and_camera_locations.png" provides an overview figure with the location of the four cameras and three stations along the channel. Video recording for all cameras is triggered using a rainfall threshold (Michel et al., 2019). The complete videos for all the cameras are...

This inventory was originally created by Okuyama and others (2013) describing the landslides triggered by the M 9.1 Tohoku-Oki, Japan earthquake that occurred on 2011-03-11 at 05:46:24 UTC. Care should be taken when comparing with other inventories because different authors use different mapping techniques. This inventory also could be associated with other earthquakes such as aftershocks or triggered events. Please check the author methods summary and the original data source for more information on these details and to confirm the viability of this inventory for your specific use. With the exception of the data from USGS sources, the inventory data and associated metadata were not acquired by the U.S. Geological...

Summary This data release is an inventory of runoff-generated postfire debris flows compiled from 17 burn areas across five western U.S. states. Debris-flow data from the following fires are included: Arizona: 2017 Pinal and 2019 Woodbury Fires California: 2020 Apple, 2020 Bond, 2015 Butte, 2020 El Dorado, 2014 El Portal, 2018 Ferguson, 2016 Fish (San Gabriel Complex), 2011 Motor, and 2017 Thomas Fires Colorado: 2020 Cameron Peak and 2018 Spring Creek Fires New Mexico: 2018 Buzzard Fire Washington: 2021 Cedar Creek, 2021 Cub Creek 2, and 2021 Muckamuck Fires The included table, “Combined_Inventory.csv”, contains debris-flow records represented as “1” or “0”, indicating whether a debris flow did occur or did not...

This data release includes time-series data and qualitative descriptions from a monitoring station on a steep, landslide-prone slope above the City of Sitka, Alaska. On August 18, 2015, heavy rainfall triggered around 60 landslides in and around Sitka. These landslides moved downslope rapidly; several were damaging, and one demolished a home on South Kramer Avenue and killed three people. On September 16-18, 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey installed instrumentation at a site near the initiation zones of these landslides and other previous landslides on the west face of Harbor Mountain. The station consists of an electronics enclosure, a mounted rain gage, and two instrumented soil pits. Instruments record continuous...
