Tributaries may either ameliorate or exacerbate the geomorphic and ecologic impacts of flow regulation by altering the flux of water and sediment into the flow-regulated mainstem. To capture the effects of tributary influences on a flow regulated river, long-term discharge and cross-sectional data are used to assess the geomorphic and hydrologic impacts of impoundment. In addition, the use of the short-lived cosmogenic radioisotope 7Be (half-life 53·4 days) to link sediment transport dynamics to benthic macroinvertebrate community structure is evaluated. It is found that the 7Be activity of transitional bed load sediment is highly seasonal and reflects both variations in activity of sediment sources and limited...

Stream water chemistry and benthic macroinvertebrate data collected in the North Fork of Clear Creek and Clear Creek, CO, USA before and after the diversion and treatment of acid mine drainage by a high-density sludge lime process water treatment plant. Stream water chemistry and benthic macroinvertebrate samples were collected from November 2011 through October 2019 at 6 sites located above and below the North Clear Creek Water Treatment Plant (NCCWTP). The NCCWTP became fully operational in September 2017. Measured water chemistry included pH, conductivity, alkalinity, ferrous iron, total and dissolved concentrations of metals and major geochemical cations, and dissolved organic carbon. Replicate (n=5) benthic...

Biological endpoints for three focal test species [Daphnia magna (mortality), Psuedacris maculata (mortality, growth, and development), and Lemna gibba (growth)] in response to exposure to reconstituted or field-collected water under laboratory conditions. Field-collected waters were collected from wetlands within the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of the United States. Reconstituted water was mixed to mimic some chemistry of surface water from brine contaminated PPR wetlands. Also included are water quality and chemical concentration data from all assays.

Data represent physical (water quality, water nutrient analysis) and biological (fish, macroinvertebrate, and vegetation community) collections from the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge in Saginaw, MI, USA (specifically, historical management unit "Pool 1A" and the North and South management units of the Maankiki Marsh Complex.) The North and South management units of the Maankiki Marsh Complex were reconnected to the Shiawassee River in 2018, whereas Pool 1A represents a historically reconnected wetland. Additional sites within the Shiawassee River and Spaulding Drain (east of Pool 1A) were also sampled to represent parameters collected from the parent water system. All data were collected in 2019.

An inventory (enumeration and taxonomic identification) of diet items consumed by wild-caught black carp, based on the examination of gut contents from fish that were collected in the lower Mississippi River drainage of the U.S.

These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program and describe bivalve count and size sampling and observations conducted at intertidal soft-sediment sampling sites in the northern Gulf of Alaska. This dataset consists of five comma separated files (.csv): 1) bivalve taxonomy table, 2) bivalve sampling site table, 3) bivalve count table, 4) bivalve size table, and 5) list of Gulf Watch Alaska principal investigators and collaborators.

In 2012, a program was initiated using in-stream and aerial (whole-watershed) liming to improve water quality and Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) recruitment in three acidified tributaries of a high-elevation Adirondack lake in New York State. Concurrently, macroinvertebrates were sampled annually between 2013 and 2016 at 3 treated and 3 untreated reference sites to assess the effects of each liming technique on this community. Macroinvertebrate communities were monitored at 6 study sites: T16, T8A (50 m upstream of lime application point), T8 (50 m downstream of lime application point), T6 (1230 m downstream of the lime application point), and at two unlimed reference streams, T24 and T20. T24 is of similar...
Patterns and processes involved in litter breakdown on desert river floodplains are not well understood. We used leafpacks containing Fremont cottonwood (Populus deltoides subsp. wislizenii) leaf litter to investigate the roles of weather and microclimate, flooding (immersion), and macroinvertebrates on litter organic matter (OM) and nitrogen (N) loss on a floodplain in a cool-temperate semi-arid environment (Yampa River, northwestern Colorado, USA). Total mass of N in fresh autumn litter fell by 20% over winter and spring, but in most cases there was no further N loss prior to termination of the study after 653 days exposure, including up to 20 days immersion during the spring flood pulse. Final OM mass was 10?40%...

Note: this data release has been superseded by version 2.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P92IJREV This dataset contains macroinvertebrate sampling data (weights) for wetlands in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota.
The data represent counts and presence of stream-dwelling aquatic macroinvertebrate communities in nine watersheds within the non-connected stormwater region in Kansas City, Missouri. Samples were collected from 3 stream habitats (coarse substrate in cobble riffles, depositional non-flow habitat in pools, and rootmats along shoreline areas). Macroinvertebrate organisms were enumerated and identified to the lowest practical taxonomic unit.

These data describe observations of sea otter foraging behavior in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Data consist of dive and surface times, success in prey retrieval, prey item, prey quantity, and size. Additionally, location of observations, and age class, sex, and pup status of the focal sea otter were also recorded.
This study examined trace elements concentrations and macroinvertebrate community structure at 32 sites in 22 streams in Colorado. Sites affected by mining activities (mining sites) and sites that were minimally disturbed (nonmining sites) were selected for the assessment. Water and transplanted aquatic bryophyte samples were analyzed for trace elements. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected to assess the effects of trace elements on the aquatic community of the stream. All samples of aquatic bryophytes had detectable concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. Principal components analysis of chemical and physical properties classified sites into three groups. The first group represented sites that were unaffected...

These data consist of three related tables describing test conditions including pesticide concentration, water quality, and post-treatment survival of crayfish associated with laboratory studies conducted to determine 24-hr acute lethal concentrations of two pesticides containing pyrethrin or cypermethrin for two crayfish species, Procambarus clarkii and Faxonius virilis. Tests investigated whether two nominal temperatures (10 and 22 °C) and total suspended solids in water affected pesticide toxicity. Laboratory data will be used to design field treatments for open-water populations of invasive P. clarkii. Water quality monitoring during testing followed standard testing protocols and included temperature, pH, specific...

OBIS-USA brings together marine biological occurrence data – recorded observations of identifiable marine species at a known time and place, collected primarily from U.S. Waters or with U.S. funding. Coordinated by the Core Science, Analytics, Synthesis, and Libraries (CSAS&L) Program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), OBIS-USA, strives to meet national data integration and dissemination needs for marine data about organisms and ecosystems. OBIS-USA is part of an international data sharing network (Ocean Biogeographic Information System, OBIS) coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization International Oceanographic...
