These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program and describe mussel sampling and observations conducted in the northern Gulf of Alaska. This dataset consists of six comma separated files (.csv): 1) mussel sampling site layout information, 2) mussel counts for mussels greater than 20 millimeters in a quadrat, 3) mussel size measurements for mussels greater than 20 millimeters in a quadrat, 4) mussel counts for all mussels collected from core samples, 5) mussel size frequencies for all mussels collected from core samples, and 6) list of Gulf Watch Alaska principal investigators and collaborators.

A data release containing information on macroinvertebrate communities and sediment toxicity in the Buffalo River Area of Concern (AOC) and reference areas immediately upstream of the AOC collected during 2017 and 2020. A major challenge in the biological monitoring of stream ecosystems in protected wilderness areas is discerning whether temporal changes in community structure are significantly outside of a reference condition that represents natural or acceptable annual variation in population cycles. Otherwise sites could erroneously be classified as impaired. This data release includes sampling location data, field-collected water chemistry data, cation and anion concentration data for water and tissues of submerged aquatic vegetation, aquatic insect larvae, adult aquatic insects and riparian spiders from 35 first- and second-order sub-alpine streams that ranged over several orders of magnitude in metal concentrations but were similar in elevation, geology, and stream morphology. Sampling was completed in late summer, after snowmelt runoff was complete and as the streams approached baseflow conditions.

A data release containing information on macroinvertebrate communities and sediment toxicity in the Niagara River and adjacent areas collected during a sampling effort conducted between 2019 and 2020, and a sampling effort conducted in 2022. The current Adirondack Long-Term Monitoring Program combines monitoring of streams and soils based on a watershed design. Not only are headwater streams an important component of Adirondack ecosystems, they are closely tied to the terrestrial environment through runoff that is strongly influenced by soil and vegetation processes. This linkage makes headwater streams a useful tool for monitoring the overall condition of the watershed, and by combining stream and soil monitoring within watersheds, the response of Adirondack ecosystems to environmental disturbances such as acid rain and climate change can be better understood. The influence of stream regulation on environmental conditions and concomitant alterations of macroinvertebrate community structure was determined from field studies conducted from September 1981-June 1983 at three sites on the upper Colorado River. Data were collected associated with the application of a pesticide to a stormwater retention pond and burrows to suppress or eradicate an invasive crayfish species, Procambarus clarkii, in support of high-priority research developing control methods to mitigate impacts of invasive crayfish within the Great Lakes Basin. In October 2017, the Atlas, Nuns, and Tubbs wildfires in Napa and Sonoma Counties, CA burned approximately 133 thousand acres. Multiple watersheds were affected by the fires, with up to 95% of some watersheds being burned. Post-fire assessments were conducted at 10 sites within Napa and Sonoma Counties to assess the effects of fire on sediment, water quality, and ecology. This data release contains data from the analysis of benthic macroinvertebrate samples, bed sediment samples, water quality samples, and algal samples.

Sampling is conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at nine wells, eight surface water sites, three bed sediment retention ponds, and two fields for soil samples at areas near and within the Open Burning/Open Detonation (OB/OD) areas in the Ammunition Area (AA) of Letterkenny Army Depot. Anthropogenic activities such as agricultural practices can have large effects on the ecological components and overall health of stream ecosystems. Therefore, having a better understanding of those effects and relationships allows for better design of mitigating strategies. These files contain all of the source USGS/EPA taxa, temperature, and percent abundance of urban and agricultural land cover within the watershed upstream of the sampling site data used to calculate taxa specific macroinvertebrate optimal temperatures and tolerances. They also contain a taxa specific list of temperature optima and tolerances generated from the data contained in source USGS/EPA data.
