Mangrove restoration has a strong potential to enhance the services provided by coastal wetlands on a number of Department of the Interior (DOI) managed lands throughout the southeastern United States of America. Services include storm protection, water quality improvement, and biological carbon sequestration. Forest structural attributes including basal area, tree height, and stem density by species are used to calculate above ground biomass and above ground productivity. Percent cover is used to asses the forest canopy health. The data collected for the soils are: bulk density, percent total Nitrogen, percent total Carbon, and selected samples percent total Phosporus. The forest structure plots were placed in...

This study monitored soil surface elevation change from mangrove forests fertilized with nitrogen and phosphorus from 2018-2021. The mangroves selected at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) have been previously exposed to high nutrient loading from agricultural discharge into the Caloosahatchee River, which elevated soil phosphorus levels to 3-4 times ambient before treatments were impose. Sea-level rise vulnerability with additional nitrogen and phosphorus is a concern for these mangrove ecosystems.

This release consists of soil surface elevation, also called vertical land motion of the wetland (VLMw), and vertical accretion data collected over time across an environmental gradient at Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge near Naples, Florida, USA. VLMw was measured using rod surface elevation tables, while accretion was measured using feldspar marker horizons (i.e., RSET-MH technique). Stations were located in the following wetland types: brackish marsh, salt marsh, transition marsh, and mangrove forest. Vegetation cover in the vicinity of the RSET-MH stations was described. The study spanned six years, from 2011 to 2017.

The Barrier Island Comprehensive Monitoring (BICM) program was developed by Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and is implemented as a component of the System Wide Assessment and Monitoring Program (SWAMP). The program uses both historical data and contemporary data collections to assess and monitor changes in the aerial and subaqueous extent of islands, habitat types, sediment texture and geotechnical properties, environmental processes, and vegetation composition. Examples of BICM datasets include still and video aerial photography for documenting shoreline changes, shoreline positions, habitat mapping, land change analyses, light detection and ranging (lidar) surveys for topographic...

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment (GCVA) used an expert opinion approach to qualitatively assess the vulnerability of four ecosystems: mangrove, oyster reef, tidal emergent marsh, and barrier islands, and a suite of wildlife species that depend on them. More than 50 individuals participated in the completion of the GCVA, facilitated via Ecosystem and Species Expert Teams. The GCVA made use of the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value Assessment (SIVVA) (Reece and Noss 2014) to provide an objective framework for evaluating vulnerability by guiding assessors through a series of questions related to the changes an ecosystem or species might experience due to climate change and other threats. Assessors...

Soil porewater (30cm and 60cm depth) was sampled for specific conductance, salinity and temperature in the southwest coastal Everglades, Everglades National Park from 1997-2012 at four sampling locations. Principal sampling location (HR) was located adjacent the Harney River and had five sampling sites (~ 60m apart) along a 300m N-S transect in a coastal mangrove fringe forest sampled from 1997-2011. Porewater was sampled from 2002-2012 at three secondary locations: Tarpon Bay (TB), Shark River (SR) and Shark Slough (SS). At each of these sampling locations, there were at least three 30cm and three 60cm porewater sampling pipes.

This dataset is part of the Florida Landscape Conservation project. The project seeks to better understand the trends of indicators within prioritized conservation assets (or habitats). The trends and analysis carried by the project will be used to aid in informing management and conservation actions at, both, the broader and detailed spatial scales. This dataset and map show the potential for mangroves to migrate inland with rising sea levels. Using the CLC, land classes within 300 meters of saltwater marsh and mangrove swamp are classified as “low”,“moderate” or “high” based on migration potential for these two coastal Conservation Assets. Further information on the FLCP, conservation asset extent, and metadata:...

Hurricanes periodically deliver sediment to coastal wetlands, such as those in the Mississippi River Delta Complex (MRDC), slowing elevation loss and improving resilience to sea-level rise. However, the amount of hurricane sediment deposited and retained in a wetland may vary depending on the dominant vegetation. In the subtropical climate of the MRDC, the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans (L.) L.) has been expanding and replacing salt marsh (Spartina alterniflora Loisel). Because these vegetation types differ in aboveground structure, their influence on sedimentation may also differ. We conducted a survey for 160 km along the outer coast of Louisiana, USA from Oyster Bayou to the Mississippi River to determine...

Mangrove forests are among the world’s most productive and carbon-rich ecosystems. In addition to providing important fish and wildlife habitat and supporting coastal food webs, these coastal wetlands provide many ecosystem goods and services including clean water, stable coastlines, food, recreational opportunities, and stored carbon. Despite a growing understanding of the factors controlling mangrove soil carbon stocks, there is a pressing need to advance understanding of the pace of peat development beneath maturing mangroves - especially in created and restored mangroves, which are often intended to compensate for ecosystem functions lost during mangrove conversion to other land uses. To better quantify the...

To avoid submergence during sea-level rise, coastal wetlands build soil surfaces vertically through accumulation of inorganic sediment and organic matter. At climatic boundaries where mangroves are expanding and replacing salt marsh, wetland capacity to respond to sea-level rise may change. To compare how well mangroves and salt marshes accommodate sea-level rise, we conducted a manipulative field experiment in a subtropical plant community in the rapidly subsiding Mississippi River Delta. Experimental plots were established in spatially equivalent positions along creek banks in monospecific stands of Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass) or Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) and in mixed stands containing...
