The Barrier Island Comprehensive Monitoring (BICM) program was developed by Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and is implemented as a component of the System Wide Assessment and Monitoring Program (SWAMP). The program uses both historical data and contemporary data collections to assess and monitor changes in the aerial and subaqueous extent of islands, habitat types, sediment texture and geotechnical properties, environmental processes, and vegetation composition. Examples of BICM datasets include still and video aerial photography for documenting shoreline changes, shoreline positions, habitat mapping, land change analyses, light detection and ranging (lidar) surveys for topographic...

Mangroves are species of halophytic intertidal trees and shrubs derived from tropical genera and are likely delimited in latitudinal range by varying sensitivity to cold. There is now sufficient evidence that mangrove species have proliferated at or near their poleward limits on at least five continents over the past half century, at the expense of salt marsh. Avicennia is the most cold-tolerant genus worldwide, and is the subject of most of the observed changes. Avicennia germinans has extended in range along the USA Atlantic coast and expanded into salt marsh as a consequence of lower frost frequency and intensity in the southern USA. The genus has also expanded into salt marsh at its southern limit in Peru,...

This dataset is part of the Florida Landscape Conservation project. The project seeks to better understand the trends of indicators within prioritized conservation assets (or habitats). The trends and analysis carried by the project will be used to aid in informing management and conservation actions at, both, the broader and detailed spatial scales. This dataset and map show the potential for mangroves to migrate inland with rising sea levels. Using the CLC, land classes within 300 meters of saltwater marsh and mangrove swamp are classified as “low”,“moderate” or “high” based on migration potential for these two coastal Conservation Assets. Further information on the FLCP, conservation asset extent, and metadata:...

Area of mangrove forest (square kilometers), by marine ecoregion. We extracted mangrove forest extents from version 3.0 of the global polygon data set compiled by UNEP-WCMC in collaboration with the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME) 1997 (for more information about the source data set, e-mail spatialanalysis@unep-wcmc.org). These are almost entirely the same data that were published in the first World Mangrove Atlas (Spalding et al. 1997). We updated this information to include eleven island ecoregions for which no mapped data were available, but where mangroves occur with low mangrove coverage. Information on these was drawn from new work to be included in the publication of a new World Mangrove...

Number of mangrove species, by marine ecoregion. We derived mangrove species diversity information from new maps of the individual ranges for sixty-five mangrove species that will be published in Spalding et al. (forthcoming). These range maps were overlain on ecoregion maps and species totals calculated for each. These data were derived by The Nature Conservancy, and were displayed in a map published in The Atlas of Global Conservation (Hoekstra et al., University of California Press, 2010). More information at http://nature.org/atlas. Data derived from: Spalding, M. D., M. Kainuma, L. Collins. Forthcoming. World Mangrove Atlas. This dataset depicts mangrove areas in the Mesoamerican region. This dataset was compiled from several national level data sources. (20m to 1:300,000).
This USGS Data Release represents geospatial and tabular data for the Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment Project. The data release was produced in compliance with the new 'open data' requirements as way to make the scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. The dataset consists of 2 separate items: 1. Vulnerability assessment data for habitat and species based on expert opinion (Tabular datasets) 2. Vulnerability assessment values for species across subregions in study area (Vector GIS dataset)

Hurricanes periodically deliver sediment to coastal wetlands, such as those in the Mississippi River Delta Complex (MRDC), slowing elevation loss and improving resilience to sea-level rise. However, the amount of hurricane sediment deposited and retained in a wetland may vary depending on the dominant vegetation. In the subtropical climate of the MRDC, the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans (L.) L.) has been expanding and replacing salt marsh (Spartina alterniflora Loisel). Because these vegetation types differ in aboveground structure, their influence on sedimentation may also differ. We conducted a survey for 160 km along the outer coast of Louisiana, USA from Oyster Bayou to the Mississippi River to determine...

This dataset is derived from NOAA's study, the Benthic Habitats of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Benthic Habitats data is the result of a cooperative effort between NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), U.S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, and the National Geophysical Data Center, to produce benthic habitat maps and georeferenced imagery for Puerto Rico. This project was conducted in support of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force.
