This dataset is comprised of water quality data and benthic macroinvertebrate data collected from basins in Colorado, USA, and Finland. The data includes ancillary water quality characteristics but also a suite of trace metals observed at each site. Also included are modeled outputs that characterize the bioavailability of each trace metal to a biotic ligand. These data were used to explore the importance of metal toxicity and pH as stressors on benthic macroinvertebrates characterized as the number of unique Ephemeroptera + Plecoptera + Trichoptera genera observed at each site. Synopsis: The goal of this study was to examine contaminant loadings associated with stormwater runoff from recently burned areas in urban fringe areas of southern California, to derive regional patterns of runoff and contaminant loadings in this context. Postfire stormwater runoff was sampled from five wildfires that each burned between 115 and 658 km2 of natural open space between 2003 and 2009. Surface sediment samples from the North San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary were collected monthly at five stations located west of Rio Vista and east of Point Pinole. Sediment was collected near Montezuma Slough, Chips Island, the Concord Naval Weapons Station, Carquinez Strait near Martinez, and San Pablo Bay at water depths ranging from 6.5 to 14.3 meters.
