Human activities from climate change to waste discharges to water management are modifying ecosystems across the earth, often in ways that are not well understood. This project addresses the problem of better understanding changes in aquatic ecosystems as driven by human disturbances interacting with natural processes. More specifically, the project studies a) the mechanisms of biological and ecological response to stressors such as metal contamination, nutrient enrichment, physical habitat alteration, climate change, and introduced species, and b) the influence of species, communities, and ecosystem processes on the distribution, transport, and fate of chemical contaminants (e.g., metals, nutrients). Most studies...

Re-analyses of sample pulps and bulk rejects from historic USBM rock and heavy-mineral-concentrate samples were conducted by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) as part of the State of Alaska's Strategic and Critical Minerals Assessment project, which is designed to evaluate Alaska's potential for these resources. The objective of this resource assessment is to expand the state's geochemical database by obtaining and publishing modern, quantitative geochemical analyses for historic USBM samples, where available. Highlights of this re-analysis project include heavy mineral concentrates with up 7,220 ppm Sn, 5,870 ppm Cr, and 17,000 ppm Mn.
Two synoptic sampling campaigns were conducted near Breckenridge, Colorado, to quantify metal loading to Illinois Gulch, a tributary of the Blue River. The first campaign, conducted in August 2016, was designed to determine the degree to which Illinois Gulch loses water to the underlying mine workings, and to determine the effect of these losses on observed metal loads. The second campaign, conducted in September 2017, was designed to evaluate metal loading within Iron Springs, a subwatershed that was responsible for the majority of the metal loading observed in 2016. A continuous, instream injection of a sodium bromide (NaBr) tracer was initiated at the head of the respective study reaches several days prior to...

This dataset describes water-quality data measured from the parking lot influent and underdrain and overflow effluent from the porous asphalt, pervious concrete, and permeable interlocking concrete paver test plots in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Data include precipitation statistics; influent, overflow, and underdrain volumes; and concentrations and loads of total and dissolved forms of solids, nutrients, chloride, metals, and bacteria. Samples were collected in September 2016 through July 2018. These data are interpreted in the Journal of Environmental Management.

The objective of this research is to study and quantitatively describe the factors that influence the response of macroinvertebrates to both anthropogenic and natural environmental factors and assess the effects macroinvertebrates have on the physical, chemical, and biological quality of aquatic systems. This involves 1) studying macroinvertebrate distributions across a range of spatial and temporal scales representing a variety of environmental settings and influences, 2) identifying and measuring the effects of stressors that are macroinvertebrate-specific, 3) identifying the effects macroinvertebrates have on the physical, chemical, and biological environment, 4) developing and applying statistical models that...

Reconnaissance and chemical and isotope sampling of thermal springs in the western United States has not generally provided information of sufficient detail to permit the geothermal potential of most individual areas to be determined with any certainty. This is especially true in the Cascade Mountain Range, where the chemical geothermometers indicate much lower temperatures of water-rock equilibrium than the sulfate-isotope geothermometer and the geologic setting seem to require. This discrepancy could be due to simple mixing of thermal and fresh water or rapid equilibration of water with the surrounding country rock as the fluids rise to the surface; alternatively, the sulfate-isotopic composition could be an artifact...
Microorganisms catalyze most of the natural redox reactions involving carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and metals. Thus, geochemical models of the distribution and fate of natural and contaminant compounds must include a microbiological component, which requires an understanding of the physiological characteristics of microorganisms that control the rate and extent of microbially- catalyzed reactions. Project objectives are: (1) to quantify the rates of microbial processes that influence the geochemistry of surface-water and ground-water aquifers; (2) to determine the physiological characteristics that control the rate and extent of microbial processes; and (3) to develop mathematical models of the distribution of microbial...
Maize played a major role in Chaco's interaction with outlying communities in the southern Colorado Plateau. This paper seeks to determine where archaeological corn cobs brought to Chaco Canyon were grown. Strontium-isotope and trace-metal ratios of 180 soil-water and 18 surface-water sites in the Southern Colorado Plateau have revealed possible source areas for some of 37 archaeological corn cobs from Chaco Canyon and 10 archaeological corn cobs from Aztec Ruin, New Mexico. The most probable source areas for cobs that predate the middle-12th-century drought include several Upper Rio Chaco sites (not including Chaco Canyon). There are many potential source areas for cobs that date to the late A.D. 1100s and early...

The diversion of freshwater from the Mississippi River is intended to mitigate saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico and to lessen the concomitant loss of wetland areas. Though effective, freshwater diversion can affect wildlife and habitat; therefore, prediversion and postdiversion data collections are necessary to identify effects. The Davis Pond freshwater diversion area is located between the Mississippi River and Bayou Lafourche and extends to Barataria Bay Basin, Louisiana. Results and interpretations from the prediversion biomonitoring done in 2001 - which included data on fish, eagles, and bivalves - are presented in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Scientific Investigations Report 2008-5067, "Davis...

These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), major anions (chloride, nitrite+nitrate as nitrogen, sulfate, etc.), dissolved organic carbon, and general water quality characteristics in Canyon Mine containment pond water, sediment, vegetaiton and invertebrate samples collected in calendar year 2017.
Synopsis: The goal of this study was to examine contaminant loadings associated with stormwater runoff from recently burned areas in urban fringe areas of southern California, to derive regional patterns of runoff and contaminant loadings in this context. Postfire stormwater runoff was sampled from five wildfires that each burned between 115 and 658 km2 of natural open space between 2003 and 2009. The area is characterized by classic Mediterranean climate conditions of relatively mild to cool wet winter and warm to hot dry summers. Between two and five storm events were sampled per site over the first one to two years following the fires for basic constituents, metals, nutrients, total suspended solids, and polycyclic...
