Airborne geophysical surveys were conducted in the eastern Adirondacks from Dec. 7, 2015 - Dec. 21, 2015, by Goldak Airborne Surveys. The area was flown along a draped surface with a nominal survey height above ground of 200 meters. The flight line spacing was 250 meters for traverse lines and 2500 meters for control lines. Here we present downloadable magnetic and radiometric (gamma spectrometry) data from those surveys as image (Geotiff) and flight line data (csv format). Background The Eastern Adirondacks region was known for iron mining in the 1800's and 1900's but it also contains deposits of rare earth minerals. Rare earth minerals are used in advanced technology such as in cell phones, rechargeable batteries...

Approximately 1,900 line square kilometers of imagery were collected using a HyMap™ sensor (Cocks and others, 1998) mounted on a modified Piper Navajo aircraft. The aircraft was flown at an altitude of approximately 5,050 m (3,480 m above the mean ground surface elevation of 1570 m) resulting in average ground spatial resolution of 6.7 m. Solar elevation and azimuth angles ranged from 42.0-48.3° (average 46.2°) and 134.2-182.4° (average 155°), respectively. HyMap measured reflected sunlight in 126 narrow channels that cover the wavelength region of 455 to 2,483 nm. Data were delivered by the operators of the sensor (HyVista Corp., Australia) in units of radiance (data are available in Kokaly and others, 2017)....

Reflectance data from HyMap™ were processed using the Material Identification and Characterization Algorithm (MICA), a module of the USGS PRISM (Processing Routines in IDL for Spectroscopic Measurements) software (Kokaly, 2011), programmed in Interactive Data Language (IDL; Harris Geospatial Solutions, Broomfield, Colorado). The HyMap reflectance data are provided and described in this data release. MICA identifies the spectrally predominant mineral(s) in each pixel of imaging spectrometer data by comparing continuum-removed spectral features in the pixel’s reflectance spectrum to continuum-removed absorption features in reference spectra of minerals, vegetation, water, and other materials. Linear continuum removal...

Thirty-four ore, twenty-nine mine waste, seven host rock, two pegmatite, and one slag sample were collected from iron oxide-apatite (IOA) mines in the eastern Adirondack Highlands near Mineville and Ticonderoga, New York, from March 2016 to August 2018. The waste pile samples included twenty-five samples collected from rubble-sized mine waste piles and four samples from processed tailings piles. The ore from historic iron mines of the eastern Adirondack Highlands, New York, contain abundant quantities of rare earth element (REE)-bearing apatite crystals. These apatite crystals are especially enriched in Y, La, Ce, and Nd. In-ground ore, mine waste piles, and tailings piles could contain apatite...

This dataset was created as part of the USGS Afghanistan Project investigating artisanal and small-scale mining activity. Clay mining for brick making purposes represents a small but important segment of the mineral extraction industry in Kabul, Afghanistan. Over the past several decades Kabul has grown from a relatively small city, with a 1970 population of less than 500,000 people, to a sprawling urban center with approximately 4.2 million people in 2020 (CIA 2020). Population growth has expanded the need for housing, commercial, and industrial buildings, and associated infrastructure. This has greatly increased demand for bricks, the primary construction material of the region. In this study, very high-resolution...

The "Broad-scale assessment of biophysical features in Colorado: Terrestrial development index using 5-kilometer moving window" raster dataset quantifies levels of development (urban, agriculture, energy and mineral extraction and transmission, and roads and railroads) for all lands in Colorado. The terrestrial development index (TDI) represents the total percentage of the estimated surface disturbance footprint from development within a 5-kilometer (km) radius moving window. The TDI scores range from 0 to 100 percent. Methods are described in the companion report (see "Larger Work" section).

Although much discussed in the literature, maps showing the detailed outline of the Colorado Mineral Belt are lacking. Lovering and Goddard (1950) show the geology and mines associated with the "Front Range mineral belt" but do not indicate an outline on plates or figures. Tweto and Sims (1963) published the outline of the Colorado mineral belt as page-size illustrations, differing on each. Sims (unpublished data, 2001) attempted to refine the outline of the Colorado Mineral Belt by sketching on a paper copy of the 1:500,000-scale geologic map (Tweto, 1979), but was lacking additional data layers such as Proterozoic structures based on aeromagnetic data, mines and prospects, to query simultaneously. Based on detailed...

This dataset is a compilation of samples collected from draining mine adits, including water and mineral precipitates, from several mines in California and Colorado. The Golinsky, Copper Bluff, and Afterthought Mines (located in northern California) and the Gold King mine (located in southern Colorado) have historically operated to recover metals including copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver and other resources (Albers and Robertson, 1961; USGS, 2005; USEPA, 2015). Data reported include field parameters, water chemistry, solid phase mineralogy and solid phase chemistry. Water samples collected from the four mine sites in 2019 were analyzed for unfiltered and filtered (0.1-0.45 micrometer) major and trace elements and...

A map of the wavelength position of the white mica 2,200 nanometer (nm) Al-OH absorption feature was compiled for a region of Nabesna, Alaska, using HyMap™ reflectance data provided and described in this data release. White mica wavelength position was computed for each pixel with spectrally predominant muscovite or illite. The computation was made using a function of the USGS PRISM (Processing Routines in IDL for Spectroscopic Measurements) software (Kokaly, 2011), programmed in Interactive Data Language (IDL; Harris Geospatial Solutions, Broomfield, Colorado). The PRISM function applies linear continuum-removal (Clark and Roush, 1984) to the 2,200 nm feature and fits a parabola to three channels: the channel...

The tables in this data release provide measures of quality for each of 304,643 records in the Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS) database, located at https://mrdata.usgs.gov/mrds/ describing mineral resources worldwide but focusing on those located in the United States. One table provides the measures of quality, the other provides the overall record scores that may be used to sort records by overall quality. MRDS is distributed from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in several different formats for the convenience of a variety of different users. For example a flattened version of the database is available in which the one-to-many relationships in MRDS are suppressed by combining them into a single field, resulting...
