The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologists responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...
The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).
This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following publication: Anna, L.O., 1986, Geologic framework of the ground water system in Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks on the Northern Great Plains, in parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1402-B, 36 p. Structural features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Structural may: 1) enhance secondary reservoir permeability and 2) provide migration pathways in unconventional rocks.

This feature class was created to assemble oil and gas well information for a comprehensive inventory of energy data pertinent to the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative decision-making process. These data are available as online resources for scientists, resource managers engaged in the Initiative, and other researchers. The GIS data and map services created for this study are available for interactive analysis and/or download at the Energy Geoscience Center WLCI website.

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province is located in South Eastern Colorado and North Eastern New Mexico, encompassing all or parts of Custer, Huerfano, and Las Animas counties in Colorado and all or parts of Colfax, Harding, Mora, and Union counties in New Mexico. The main population centers within the study area are Trinidad,...

In cooperation with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), the U.S. Geological Survey prepared geospatial layers illustrating the boundaries of the regions used in the South Carolina (SC) Stream Hydrograph Methods presented in Bohman (1990,1992). The region limits were described in written text and depicted in figures in Bohman (1990, 1992), but have not been provided as geospatial layers (due to the age of the original publications). This project used best-available geospatial data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) ecoregions (2013) to create equivalent geospatial representations of the Bohman (1990, 1992) region boundaries for the SC Stream Hydrograph Methods. These layers...

In response to the Nisqually earthquake of 2001, DGER was awarded a grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Washington Emergency Management Division to develop two types of earthquake hazard maps for every county in the state—liquefaction susceptibility maps, which outline areas where water-saturated sandy soil loses strength during earthquake shaking, and NEHRP (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program) site class maps, which outline areas where soils amplify ground shaking. The maps will be used by state and local governments to update existing hazard mitigation plans and to delineate geologically hazardous areas under the Growth Management Act. In response to the Nisqually earthquake of...

This coverage includes arcs, polygons and polygon labels that describe U.S. Geological Survey defined geologic provinces of the Africa. Each province has a set of geologic characteristics distinguishing it from surrounding provinces. These characteristics may include the dominant lithologies, the age of the strata, and the structural style. Some provinces include multiple genetically-related basins. Offshore province boundaries are generally defined by the 2000 meter bathymetric contour, but where appropriate are defined by the 4000 meter bathymetric contour. In some cases province boundaries are delineated by political boundaries, as in the case of The United States and Canada, because United States petroleum resources...

Maintaining the native prairie lands of the Northern Great Plains (NGP), which provide an important habitat for declining grassland species, requires anticipating the effects of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and climate change on the region’s vegetation. Specifically, climate change threatens NGP grasslands by increasing the potential encroachment of native woody species into areas where they were previously only present in minor numbers. This project used a dynamic vegetation model to simulate vegetation type (grassland, shrubland, woodland, and forest) for the NGP for a range of projected future climates and relevant management scenarios. Comparing results of these simulations illustrates...

This scholarly work explores the causes precipitating the collapse of the nuclear industry during the late 1970s and early 1980s, viewing the nuclear energy sector as a paradigmatic example of the fundamental incompatibility between democracy and capitalism. Though he never explicitly blames either capitalism or democracy, author John L. Campbell explains how the fact that the two are governed by contradictory decision-making logics ultimately doomed the nuclear industry during the time period he examines. Campbell considers policy constraints and faliures in industry and government, such as a lack of standardization in reactor construction and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission’s (AEC) inability to craft a reactor...
